TEA
The Jade God
By
MARY IMLAY TAYLOR
CHAPTER XII
Pam had ordered her little tea -
table carried into the library. She
rarely made tea there unless Burle-
son asked it, but today he was out
and the great fireplace tempted her.
It Was a gray clay and the leap of
the fire would he like the heart of
a welcome -- w•arnt and bright, It
was nearly five o'clock. She had
barely time to give a fete more
dainty touches to her tea -table, 1ler
eye caught the glimmer of the
green jade god on her uncle's li-
brary table. The sight of it re-
called his fare yesterday, the sudden
red streak between his brows; she
stood an instant looking at the cu-
rious little green image, ilS turas
elfish fare, its pointed beard,
gran as scateec•d, its perfect hauls,
1t squatted as an Oriental god
should, and the light from the fire
gleamed on its bald jade head. Sud-
denly fancy seized her; slie lifted it
and put it gently down on her tattle
beside the flowers,
"Uncle iicle can lend it to me for an
hour anyway," she thought, and
glancing again at the clock, forgot
It,

The good brown earth is with
us yet --- as to that we were be-
ginning to have some doubt — it
is so long since we had seen it —
but today there are patches showing
up here and there; a grey -brown
circle at the base of the chestnut
tree; little bits of ploughed land
appearing in the kitchen garden;
small patches' looming up darkly
from the otherwise snow-covered
fields that were ploughed last fall.
And, while we may be overly op-
timistic, SVC think by present in-
dications that many of our moun-
tains of snow may get away
without creating any serious flood
conditions. if that be so, it will
indeed be something to he thank-
ful for.
And do you know the crows are
out again? 'those noisy troublesome
birds that are such a pest in sum-
mer but so welcome in winter be-
c,use we credit them with a fore-
knowledge of spring, which they
probably think is somewhere just
around the corner,

It will be nearly a month be-
fore our baby chickens nrrive —
and when they come they will be
sexed pullets. Partner and I never
agree when the time coiues each
year to order chickens, Partner al-
ways wants plenty of cockerels, I
would rather be without male birds
altogether and raise only pullets,
However we generally compromise
by ordering mixed chickens, But
this year we are both having our
own way, We are getting pullets
in March and cockerels in May. I
always say that by having both
sexes together the cockerels are
raised at the expense of the pullets,
even when they are too young to
be separated, The greedy little
stales always boss their poor little
sisters at every turn, crowding
around the feed troughs, showing
by their action,: it doesn't matter
who gets left as long as they don't.
And do they eat! lust about twice
as much as the wee pullets. But
still, if no one raised these hussy
young cock( rel,, there wouldn't be
any roast chickens on our tables,
would there? We can always sell
more dressed chickens than we
raise so 1 feel I have to overcome
my aversion and fall in line with
Partner's ideas, but always with a
grins satisfaction that those strut-
ting, gluttonous birds trill finally
get their deserts.

Why You Should Vote "Yes"
On March the 12th
On March 12th, 1945, the ratepayers of Blyth will be called
upon to give their assent or dissent to a by-law setting a fixed
assessment of $1,000.00, for the ensuing ten years to The Blyth
Farmer's Co -Operative Association for Municipal taxation.
In our opinion there should not be one dissenting vote for
the following reasons :---
1. A fixed assessment of $1,000. for Municipal purposes, sim-
ply means that full municipal tax will be paid on that amount,
with school and local improvement tax on the entire assessed
value of the property.
2. If Blyth is to take it's rightful place in the community, it be-
hooves ratepayers to encourage every effort to improve the
industrial position of our village. There is no better way to
exemplify our interest in the welfare of Blyth than by voting
in favor of the by-law.
Every industry centred in our village not only enhances the
value of all property, but also affords an increased demand
for labour.
We, the Board of Trade, request that every property owner
do not fail to be at the Poll on March 12th, and register their vote
in favor of the by-law.
We ask you to mark your ballot thus:

a4 THE RED CROSS ASKS YOUR HELP
TO HEAL A WAR-TORN WORLD
• Wherever the great destroyer, War,
has passed, pain, suffering and sorrow
follow in its wake. Young men on the
battlefield or in hospitals are tormented
by sickness or wounds. Little children,
mothers, aged people are homeless,
hungry, cold. In every theatre of war,
whole cities lie in ruins. Millions arc
suffering the pangs of disease, starvation
and dire want.
So the. Red Cross will continue to
reach out a helping hand. It must heal

And the Canadian Red Cross will

your neighbors, and all the good folks
up and down this fair Dominion of ours.
You will send help -- yes, life itself — to

WHAT OF' THE FUTURE?`
Many believe the Giant stock will sell up to s•10.00 or $50.00 per shale within
the next two years. Frobisher owns over a million shares of Giant stock, which
would influence the price of its stock to a considerable extent. Gotham is tied on to
Frobisher and one could expect the value of the Gotham stock to rise to several dol-
lrs per share and with favorable results found on the property to much higher prices.
If Giant goes to $50.00, what will be the price of Gotham?

A Chance o Fishin'
RS, and the right to go fishin' .. .
1 the right to enjoy the simple,
pleasant things of life! Picnics by the
river—week-end trips in the old
family jalopy—these are some of the
things that your boy is fighting for
today! And he won't be able to
enjoy those things, unless we at home
':: for h/in against inflation—unless
V...1 make sure when he gets back his
dollar will be worth a dollar.
To p:s-tett his dollar, we must
realize NO the dangers of careless,
unnecessary buying! '\'e must buy
Only what we neer—never buy two
where one will do! \''e must not
evade rationing or price control, or
deal with black markets. If we break
the rules, our country—the country
he's fighting for'—will start on that
spiral of prices known as inflation!
Remember! Every time ONE of us
breaks ONE of these rules, we're
1:r., cring tlic value of our soldier's
dollar. We're helping to shoot
prices sky-high ; ; : and sky-high
prices mean inflation. The value of
every dollar in Canada goes down,
and when the men overseas come
back their dollar might buy only a
quarter's worth of goods!
\Ve can prevent inflation! \Ve can
give our fighting man his "right to go
Iishin"', if we make sure his dollar
will be worth a dollar, when he
comes home. We can't give hack to
him his lost years, or his lost youth.
But if we keep up the fight against
inflation, he can look forward to
pleasant, satisfying living — the
Canadian way of.life!
