Kaiser's And Hitler's
Submarine Warfare
In the early months of 1917, the
Kaiser came within a hairline of
victory with his submarine war-
fare, In this war Hitler has made
far greater use of the U-boat. The
full part it played in the Nazis'
near -victory in 1'.140-41 won't, of
course be known until after the
war, but it will doubtless be found
to have been tremendous.
Suffice it for now that the joint
Roosevelt -Churchill figure of 500
German, submarines destroyed since
September, 1930, compared with
only 203 sunk from 1014 to 19181
Then against this place the solemn

Canada's Prosperity
Is Not An Accident
It is not accidental that Canada
has achieved its high standard of
prosperity and comfort under a
system of private capitalism oper-
ating under democratic rule, clans
the Kitchener Record, The system
has its operational faults and
abuses, but basically it is strong,
popular and successful.
What we need now is a sound
plan for putting that system back
on a peacetime basis with fewer
faults and abuse.. than it had
before, and a willing and co-
operative belief in it by all of us
who must make it work.
Fill that need—as undoubtedly
it will be filled—and we need not
go looking for red bogeymen un-
der the bed,
KITTEN FOLLOWS CANADIAN SOLDIER
This unidentified Canadian soldier of the Royal Canadian Corps
of Signals, has adopted this stray kitten from the battlefields of
France. Puss follows the lad no platter where he goes. Picture
shows Puss cavorting along a roadside while her Lord and
Master strings a telephone line. Even shell bursts fail to keep
the kitten away,
Up In The Air
A traveller from Berlin sald a
typical story going the rounds in
the German capital was that after
the wat was lost Hitler and Goering
were hanging sid.: by side tram
a gallows, convicted as war crim-
inals. Goering turned to Ilitier and
said:
"Didn't I always tell you Adolf,

Spirits Ration
EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 2nd, 1944
COMMENCING October 2nd, 1944, and until further
notice, every individual permit holder will be permitted
to purchase monthly one bottle of spirits (25 or 26 ounces)
or two half bottles as available.
As a result of the restrictions imposed by the Dominion
Government under the Wartime Alcoholic Beverages Order
P.C.11374, it was necessary to reduce the monthly ration of
spirits to 13 ounces to assure adequate supplies of spirits until
the end of the year. In increasing the ration it should be
explained to the public that unless the restrictions imposed
by the Dominion Government are removed a similar restric-
tion will be necessary again next year, although the Board,
except for the Dominion Restriction, would be able to make
available for distribution stocks of spirits in excess of the
present ration.
In any event, however, the ration becoming effective on
October 2nd can be maintained throughout the winter months,
so it is hoped that the public will co-operate by not buying in
excess of actual requirements.

"MADEMOISELLE FROM ARMENTIERES"
IIJ1,1,elaAJliBhlsnai:nekn6,sa tai
Tpr. Frank Grummett, Tolfield, Alberta, takes time out to converse
with the 1944 version of "Mlle, from Armentieres". Cecile was the
name of this charming young lady,
"Prince" Ships In Two Invasions
rtiwo veteran skippers, Commander
.L '1'. Douglas Kelly, Royal Cana-
dian Naval Reserve, of Victoria, B,C.,
(left), and Captain V. S. Godfrey,
It.C.N,, of Ottawa, Ont. (right), have
played an important part in the suc-
cessful invasions of Normandy and
on the south of France. They were
the commanding officers of the Cana-
dian auxiliary cruisers, the Prince
David (top) and the Prince Henry,
former Pacific Coast cruise ships of
tho Canadian National Steamships.
In both invasions, these two cruisers
put thousands of troops ashore in
assault landing craft.,
Commander Kelly has a wealth of
sen experience, starting his career in
1920 as n cadet at the Royal Canadian
Naval College. Two years later, he
signed on as an able seaman on an oil
tanker and, by 1920, was in command
of the sante company's tankers,
Commander ICelly joined the Navy
in 19-10, and the following year
was appointed to the 1[MCS Prince
David ns executive officer, IIo bo -
came commanding officer of the
'David" on her recommissioning as
an invasion ship.
Captain Godfrey is also a thoroughly
skilled seaman, having seen service
with the Canadian and Royal Navies
for the past thirty years. He was ap-
pointed commanding oflicer of the
IIMCS Prince Henry when she was
recommissioned as an invasion vessel.
In their battle dress, these two ships,
although well-known to thousands of
Canadian National Steamships travel-
lers, could hardly be identified ns one-
time luxury cruisers, A sister ship, the
Prince Robert, is also a war ship and
the Indy Nelson, formerly flagship of
the company's West Indies fleet; iS
Canada's senior hospital ship.

LIFELINE TO TRAPPED PARATRTOOPERS
Symbols of the Nazis' fierce but vain liattle to prevent Allies from
holding highway bridge across the Waal Rhine river in Holland are
the bodies of two German soldiers in foreground of photo above.
Past then, an Allied tank speeds along this vital link between
Nijmegen and trapped paratroopers who escaped from Arnhem

BECOMING?
This Parisian creation looks
mighty chic on Allied Army nurse
who was so intrigued by the hat
that she just had to doff her tin
helmet and try it on. And because
the hat was so becoming, the de-
signer told her to keep it.

They're TALKING ABOUT ... a TenCent Dollar!
ieq speak of it glibly...butwhat does it mean? If m Bans that every pay-day if your
boss paid you in crisp new one•dollar bills-. each of them would buy only a
s\„
measly ten•cents'worth of goods 10• All those savings you've made with ten dimes
to a dollar S1p0' would shrinktothesizeofone ®. That's inflation! So we're lucky in
Canada that price ceilings and other anti-inflationary measures have kept our'
dollar value HIGH. In fact, a dollar goes further today ... buys more goods

than tho dollar of 1918, Look at these prices, a pound of cocoa today j comparedto

I promise to give my support to keeping the cost
of living down. I will buy only what I need. I
will observe the ceiling whether buying or sell-
ing goods or services. I will pay off old debts,
save for the future, invest in Victory Bonds and
War Savings Certificates. And I will support
taxes which help lower the cost of living.
