HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Blyth Standard, 1943-05-05, Page 1THE LYTH STANDAR VOLUME 17 - NO. 39. BLYTH, ONTARIO, WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 19.13, To The Citizens of Blyth. It is with hope and confidence we appeal to you to subscribe to the utmost of your ability for this fourth Victory Loan. All we, who remain be- hind, are asked to do is to loan our dollars (at twice bank interest rates) in order to supply the mater- ials for the boys to carry on "over there." We have not been called upon to make any sacrifices in the form of service ---we have not even shared any of the dangers of war, but surely if we have dollars remaining idle the least we can do is to let them work for the good cause of freedom. The history of past loans has proven that the average person is the one who subscribes for the most, but we appeal particularly to those who may have saving account deposits in the Bank. Surely a person will feel more comfortable if he or she allows the use of this money to prove their patriotism. We are told that in Canada there is 3 to 4 times the amount in the banks which is needed for the 4th Loan, so let it not be said of Blyth that such con- ditions exist here. 4 Our allotment is $39,000,00, Brussels is $73,000.00. They are assessed on the basis of towns while we are assessed on a Township basis of $60.00 per person. Let's prove our loyalty, and lend our money, not just enjoy the good things which are ours. The number of pe )'sons employed was probably lets in 1912. in spite of this fact, the income per farm was 11,000.00 more than in 1933, In these times, Mr, McLean raid, the fall t'r's mind is easy in toe very important respect. He hnotws there will be a ready mar- ket, for everything;' he can produce but a time will conte when world food production will get back to (100111(11. What. will then happen 14) ('anadian agriculture? f ost•war 12eeonatruction An enlightened Agricultural policy mltst keep in mind the fact that one-third of ('anada's popula- tion lives on her farms. The wel- fare of this large part is clearly an important tactor in the wel- fare of the w'hule. Phrased in purely economic language, the purchasing power of the farm 'romps is one of lh • most im- portant elements in the total economy of the country. flow can the welfare of ('aua- Illan Agriculture be advanced'? Or, otherwise, how can Ag'ricul- Iaral depressions bo avoided? Depressed Conditions Depressed conditions, when they occur, derive from two main lapses: -- 1a) Crop failures. '!'hese are spasmodic, and local. Neverthe- less, they $01»et1111et assume major proportions. Fortunately, this is not true of our own Province, In Ontario we have never suffered from crop failures on a disastrous scale. (h) The other cause of depres- sion is low prices. A1) 01 us here can recall at least two prolonged periods in )which the things which the farmer produced could not be exchanged for an adequate quan- tity of the things which he had to buy'. In such periods, ere 1 those farmers tt'ith good crops art doomed to a how' standard of ing. And the whole economy 5111'- lers from the f;u'nler's lack of purrlasing power. Farmers do not refuse subsidies when they are offered. However, i think it is true to say they have an underlying feeling that this type of assistance caul not per- manently benefit them. Natural Economic 11Iethods (2) Other methods of main- taining prices 1 have referred to as 'natural economic nlethnd$.' 'Chose must be the outgrowth of the underlying conditions of Can- adian Agriculture. These condi- tions may be summarized a5 fol- lows :---- 1a) Because of its wide Agri- cultural :ureas and it; relatively sparse population, Canada pro- duces, and must. continue to pro- duce, a large Agricultural sur- plus. ( b ) A surplus call exist in Iti primary forst 1e.g. wheat), or it may be convened from a printery to it secondary form! (e.g. wheat may he converted to live stock, dairy products, poultry, etc,) An enlightened Agricultural policy; in\'olv'es the conversion of the total surplus to the forms in w'hiclh it can most readily be marketed. (c) When a surplus exists of any one crop, the price obtainable olr011(1 for that surplus is the chief factor in determining the price which the producer receives for the total crop. (Example: the price of all the wheat is determined chiefly by the price received for the surplus at Liverpool; the price of all the hogs is determined chiefly by the price received for \Vi1tshire Itaeon at London.) ((I) 1f a surplus of any crop exists which can not be cleated, the price of that crop is hound to be depressed, (e.g., wheat in the last twelve years.) Maintaining Prices Out of the ahowe factors, there emerges what may he called a natural economic method it main- taining Agricultural once' in Canada. It is: -- (1) To secure markets abroad, at satisfactory prices. for Can- ada's total Agricultural surplus. ('2) To conwoft that surplus into the forms in which lnlukets can most 0( adily be secured. .A t the present tiltte, these con - 111100s exist, (with the modified exception of 11110))), \nd. as a )'(',tilt, :\'o't ltnitlll'(• til :4) a prie.pef(tti,- condition. No. 7, GALT, ONTARIO— Champion Plowman of Ontario, 1942. Ootewtas &avow Peo-etimaa Recommeadd—VICTORY iO Mr. Brown, who is President of the Central Dumfries Farmers' Club, has competed in 37 plowing matches in the last three years. In these 37 contests he has won 34 First Prizes and 3 Second Prizes. "Bob" Brown bought Victory Bonds in the First, Second and Third Victory Loans, and has placed his order for Bonds for the Fourth Victory Loan to the limit of his capacity. When Mr. Brown urges others to buy Victory Bonds his recommend- ation carries weight for he backs his words with action. MORE "Bob" Brown plows a straight furrow and thinks in a straight line. He knows farmers' problems. Here is what Bob Brown says about Victory Bonds: "If Canadians were asked to give money to help to win the war, we would not be asked to make a big sacrifice. Some are giving their lives. But we are asked to lend money. I am sure that farmers throughout Canada will be glad to lend money to their country, for like all other Canadians, they know we must do all we can to help. "There is a practical reason for buying Victory Bonds, too. The money we lend to Canada now, to help win the war, will be ours to use as we please after the war has been won. Ready cash will be handy to have when we will want to replace farm equipment that is wearing out now. A farmer can always find a use for savings, and there is no better way to save than by investing all we can in Victory Bonds." Vick the Att BUY VICTORY B WHAT A VICTORY BOND IS: A Victory Bond Is the promise of the Dominion of Canada to repay in cash the full face value of the Bond at the time stipulated, with balf•yearly interest at the rate of 3,6 per annum until maturity. A Victory Bond is the safest investment in Canada. The entire resources of the Dominion stand behind it. Canada has been issuing bonds for 75 years, and has never failed to pay every dollar of principal and interest. A Victory Bond is an asset mom readily converted into cash than any other security. 02-4 National irar Finance Committee Wear This Emblem of Victory 1 PASTURE TO RENT \ 1,1:,• 11,1' i01111.' 4); Ho V;•,11. 11'1 i1;1‘11. John 4:35. Memory Verse: The l.orti is my helper. Hebrews 13:6. THE LESSON IN ITS SETTING 'lime.—A.D. 36. Place.—The city of Samaria, in Central Palestine, northwest of Sychar and Shochent. Simon the Sorcerer "Now when the apostles that were at Jerusalem heard that Sa- maria had reeeived the word of God, they Bent unto them Peter and John." They were doubtless sent to inspect the work, and eco whether the apostolic approval could bo given to the step of evangelizing the Samaritans. They had to form a judgment upon it; for no natter how highly we may rate the inspiration of the apos- tiles, it is clear that they had to argue, debate, think, and balance one side against nnother inst. like other people. Peter Rebukes Simon "13ut Peter said unto him, Thy silver perish with thee, because thou hast thought to obtain the gift of God with money. 'Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right before God.” Here is a double revelation, first of Peter's own heart, and then of Simon's heart, Peter had many faults, but a love for money was not one of them. This was the tragedy of Judea Iscariot. Peter may have made many blunder., and at times proved himself a coward, but one thing he knew, that the gospel of Christ was the gospel of holiness, and that whatever power he had, or anybody else would have, in the name of Christ, mut bo by a divine bestowal, through the Holy Spirit, in the name of Christ, not something mechanical, not some- thing to be bought, not something which could he passed automati- cally from loan to man. it is one thing to ask God for divine power, that we may use it for ilia glory in saving souls; it is another thing to seek . piritual port er for our- selves, that we ourselves may he exalted among men, that our own reputation il:ny be- enhanced, or, worst of all, that our income might be multiplied. This man's heart was wrene. 110 did not know the true Ged, and he was not seeking t.hc will of God, A Prisoner of Evil "Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and gray the Lord, If perhaps the thought of thy heart shall he forgiver: thte." During the 11151 war British air- men made about 800 leaps from observation balloons which were ?hot down or caught, fire, and in only three instances did the parachutes fail to open . , .. But parachute jumping from panes was not done, probably because of the speed of the machines and because the technique bre} not been developed as it is now. Sttrtulge to say the first record of a parachute jump 11'0111 a plane was that of a Wonlaul, Miss Sylvia Boyden, who volunteered to try it at n peace celebration in Lon- don after the War, She went up in a two-seater Avro, and from 1,000 feet made a perfect land- ing. Her feat attracted so much notice that she was invited to give demonstrations in the United Staten where she made many suc- aeseful leaps. Help the Royal Canadian Navy.
