is quoted as being opposed to the nver-

of the railroads.
Of over eapitalizntion Mr. Rockefeller
is quoted as flying:

Mr. Rockefeller, however, was unable
to suggest a remedy for 11xintbtg cases
of over -capitalization. He Said in his
judgment it would be next to impossible
to reduce such capitalizat.inne now with-

A Toronto despatch: A proposition to

Ing of the Executive Committee of the
Ancient Order of United Workmen yes-
terday. At present no man in such em-

the committee agreed that there should

In organization work during the year, a
less amount than has been spent in any
year during the lust decade. Because
the competition among fraternal soci-
eties is so keen it was argued that a
larger amount should be spent.
A proposal to abolish 50 per cent. of
the districts, lessening the number of dis-

appointment of u Medical Board to as-

voted down by the counnittee. The

TIiE ratepayers of Blyth made n big
advancement on 'Tuesday of this week
when they recorded their votes for the
Ilill lis -law and thus starts and in-

towns and villages are only to willing
to accept the proposition from nn out-
sider, who may have neither money or
the ability to help his business along
and in a year or may he less, the town
has the whole thing on their hands.

ON Good Friday the Western Football
Association meets at Stratford for their
annual sleeting, For years this meet-
ing hits been held in Perlin, the ehief
officer came from Berlin and and as a
consequence the W. P, A. was run by a
few tin -horn sports in that city, We
hope at this meeting the officers will
he a new lot and that the league will
have a new lease of life. In our mind
the W. I', A. is as rotten as the 0. L.
A, and the 0, II. A, and a general
spring clean up this year will give the
league a good name, IVO hope the
headquarters of the W. F. A. will be in
Stratford. Here's to the success of the

Getting the First Thousand.
(Denver Republican.)
"Get the first S1,(Oo. Atter that money

advice of the hard-headed' self -wade man.
That axiom has eel many mon to saving,
They fixed upon that sunt as the glittering
far-off herald of a fortune some time to be
made. To a luno on a small salary—a .alnr y,
Bay, out o( which something can be saved
wookly without too much deprlvatlon—the
advice is good. There Ls elulething in it
that acts as a stimulus to econotny. And
who will deny that economy is a good thing
or that any truth that lights the way to
it should not be known? \laxly men, there•
fore. have boon buoyed up In their economies
by the belief that the first 51,000 Is the hard-
est to get and that ;afterward all the rest
would be (easy and the good things of the
world that follow a bouut. ous supply of
money would be within easy roach.

WOMAN FIGHTS A LIONESS,
Does God Answer Prayer?
(By the Bev. !forold E. Brierley.)
"Pray without ceasing." ---1. Thetis, V.

As we rt'all these famllitr word", two
qucs110104, one un essentially modern
question, press for answer -18 this pod-
siblo'1 Is it worth while? The answer
to both questions depends entirely upon
what yon nnderstnnd by prayer.
Many men lvho believe in Plod and love
(lid are doubtful concerning prayer, ']'hat
may seem a contradiction of teriny, but
];now it is true, And not u few huvl>
sought refuge from the difficulty --and
provided answer as to the worth of
prayer --411 what is known as the sub-
jective interpretation of prayer. That
is to say, they find the whole value of
Prayer not In any external function, but
in the inward effect of it, in its worth
to their ntvn souls, in (ho grate and
sweetness and 'refreshing power of it.
They pray because prayer (makes theta
holler and happier men, not because they
hold the belief that prayer has any effect
upon God.
Now, the difficulty begins to disappear
8.9 soots as ve look it squarely in the
face, Prayer' is not nn attempt to impose
our will upon (god's. It its utterly to
misunderstand and to Iuisuse prayer to
imagine that by prayer we can change
the will of the Almighty. No, that is
to regard it exactly the wrong way
round. Prayer is the changing of our
wills.
'1'he secret of prayer is not persuading
Cod to Ito things, but giving Him the
opportunity' of doing them. Objectively
Thrilling Encounter With Enraged Beast considered, prayer is giving God the

Farmer and Reeve Bobier last Saturday
on a charge made by Constable Bissett
of disturbing the peace, They all
pleaded guilty whereupon the magis-
