THE NEW YEAR
The dead leaves flit across the wold,
And swiftly spins the weather -vane ;
Tho Old Year's golden grains are told,
And New Year time is born again,
Then toes the logs upon the hearth,
And let the brimming kettle boil ;
Of earnest cares let there be dearth ;
Grant g, od•cheer as the wage of toil.
In garnered heaps rich treasures lie,
Gleaned artfully from many a field ;
The hungry crow flies 'neath the sky,
Or calls from out the gloomy Weald.
So put the pot upon the board,
And gather 'round each face so dear,
Fill up the cup, fill up the gourd
And bumpers drink to the New Year,
Ilensall.

HAMILTON MAN
CLAIMS PEERAGE.
01•001...,..11
A Descendant of Robert iI, of Scot-
land.
Is Heir to the Ancient Earldom of
Airth.
House of Lords Committee Now In-
vestigating.
London, 1)ee, 31.—Mr. Barclay -Allar-
dice, formerly a 11 all Street stock-
broker in New York, has a fair chance
of establishing his claim to the ancient
Earldom et Airth.
Barclay -Allardice is a native of
Hamilton, Ont., but went to New York
when he was n young man and was
successful from the start. He at that
time was determined to prove his title,
but realized that it would take ulouey
to support the dignity of the pusitiuu.
Hence he !rade looney.
Coining to Great Britain, he settled
At Lostwithicl, of w•hiuh i unicipe it.).
ho is now the Mayor.
This is one of the most romantic
peerage cltiici in all histury, and is
uow being considered by the House of
Lords Committee ut Privileges. It is
expected that a vat( will be taken anon
after C'hristutats,
The story told to the committee and
supported by voluminous documents is
one that goes back to King Robert 11.
of Scoll:uld, the common unceetor of
the English Stuart Kings, of King Ed-
ward Vti., raid of the \1u) or of Lost-
withiel, according to the pedigree
which Mr. Barclay -Allardice will put
forward.
For Mr. Barclay -Allardice asserts
that he is descended in a straight line
from the eldest legitimate son of Rob.
ert II, of Scotland, while, as is not dis-
puted, the Stoma kings ---and therefore
King Edward—arc descended from Rob-
ert III., who was bort' years before his
mother because the wife of Robert 11.
Common Ancestor.
Robert Ili., the ancestor of Charles
I, and of King Edward, was not, geneal-
ogically, the true heir to his futher.s
crown, being horn nut of wcdlick. The
first child of Robert I1.. horn in wedlock;
was his eldest. son by his second wife,
David, Earl of Stratheurn, and it is from
this son that Mr, Barclay -Allardice thus
traces his descent,
It is said that "hereditary rights
never die." but whatever rights the
descendants of the first Earl of Strath•
earn ever hod to the throne of Scotland,
hundreds of years ago, were in fact bar-
red by an Act of the Scottish Parliament
which settled the succession on the earl-
ier children of Robert If. And what-
ever rights the heirs of the Pretender
had in later times were as effectually
barred by the Act of the English Par-
liament which placed the Georges on the
throne.
But while the aereptnnce of Mr. Bar-
elayAllardiee's pedigree by the .1 -louse
of Lords would give rise to no new pre-
tendership, it would perhaps be n sourer
of Woe to the "Legitimist" or 'White
Rose" enthusiasts, who still, in nn Head•
emir, way, champion the rights of the
descendants of the Pretender to the Eng-
lish Crown.
Strict Heredity.
These enthusiasts, of course, base the
claim of the Pretender's descendants
to the throne on strict hereditary—Acts
of Parliament being held of no account
—and if the Mayor of I.ostwithie)
proves that he is the true "heir in
line" of the Scottish King, through
whom the Stuarts came to the Crown,
he would take genealogical precedence
ofthe present Legitimist heiress,
Princess Louis of Bavaria, who is rc-
garded by the Legitimists 8.9 being by
hereditary right "Queen Mary IV,"
Mr, L. Stuart, of Doughty Street, W.
C,, who is deeply versed in genealogical
matters, and has closely studied Mr.
BarelayAllardice's claim, put the mat-
ter clearly from the genealogist's point
of view. IIe said:
"Robert H. got over the illegitimacy
of his son, whom he designed for his
successor by an Act of Parliament, but
60 Acts of Parliament could never in
realty remove the taint in the blood of
Robert III. The hereditary right there-
fore remains in the issue of the letter's
legitimateA half•brothcr, David, Earl ni
fltrnthearn, whose representative the
Cornish lfayor claims to be."
Mr, BarclayAllardiee's claim to the
dormant Earldom of Airth becomes still
more interesting in view of the fact
that it is to be contested by another
descendant of Robert II.—Mr. George
,lfarshall Graham, of Lcitchtow'n, for-
merly of 'Toronto, Canada, w'ho is itsic•
ing the Ilorse of Lords to recognize his
rightnot only to the .birth earldom,
but to the r,jder earldom of :11ento11h
and the still older earldom of Strath•
earn, all now dormant.
There is, \I1, Stuart said, praeticull,y'
no doubt nlont the descent. of both
claimants, and in the highly probable
event of both lines of descent being
proved to the satisfaction of the Com -
mitten of Privileges, the only remain•
ing gltestinli is which huts the stronger
claim to the dormun•t titles,
Since the death of the second Earl of
Airth, in 16;1.4, the earldom has been
dorunuit, for it le a curious fact that
none of his sisters' descendants clninie l
the title until 18:14, when Mr, Robert
I3arelny-:Ihia'diee. the present claimant's
grnlldfnthrr ,lout: his case before. the
_louse of f.nrdb,
In 1870 Mr. 1larelay•Allardicc's motto
cr made another attempt to accurc a
decision, but she was not in a position
to preys her claim to a conclusion, and
It fell through ',without tiny decision
being arrived at by the ('onimittee on
Privileges, Mr. llarclay-Allardice hopes
at the third attempt to establish his
claim beyond doubt.
A remarkable cnincideme, in the came
is that both \hr. ilm'(luy•Albindi,, and
31r. Grnhnnt buil from the other side
of the .(Mantis, that the eventual heirs
of both of then) are their nephews, and
Pint both of these nephews were born in
the United States.

CRIMINAL RECAPTURED.
Terror of Indians in Western Muskoka
Broke Jail at Parry Sound.
A Parry Sound, Ont., despatch: Crown
Attorney Haight has received notifica-
tion of the recapture at Port Severn of
Henry Cascanette, a desperado of the
worst type, who on May 30 escaped
from the .jail here, where he was
awaiting trial on several serious
charges, among them brutal treatment
of .his daughter, Caseanette was taken
by Constables .J. J, Vent and W. E. N.
Ferguson, of Victoria Harbor, without
resistance. He was sawing logs at, the
time and Was unarmed.
Caseannette, who is a notorious crim•
inal, has for years past been regarded
with the greatest terror by all the In -
dians between Wauhaushene and Moon
River, It is alleged that he frequently
entered the houses of his less powerful
countrymen and demanded whatsoever
he desired, and if he could not obtain it
by the asking, would resort to all man-
ner of threats, On Many occassions he
helped himself to anything he wanted.
His recapture is the more important
as it was feared that he would Wreak
vengeance on some of diose who aided
the officers to apprehend him last May.

HOW PROF. BINET CAUGHT THE
GRAPHOLOGICAL FAKIRS,
in :Trnnslatnntic Tales for January
the editor writes:
An eminent professor of le Sorbonne
of Paris, 31. Binet, has just played a
very mean trick m1 graphologists. These
gentlemen have been pretending for it
long time that they could readily tell a
man's character aunt intelligence by his
handwriting. 1'i'ofessor Binet lune ,just
given the result of huts investigation to
the public in a very curious and amusing
volume, ile submitted to the experts u
number of letters, ingeniously mingling
together those of heat Wren, assassins,
thieves and honest citizens. According to
the report, 01)c0 in n while the grapholo-
gists guessed right, but in a majority
of Mete/tees they were grotesquely mis-
taken, praising a criminal and dimm-
ing a num of miqu *41loned integrity, ac•
cording precedence to an assistant clerk
in n grocery store over soma of the
greatest modern writers and scientists,
It is very evident that the professor
has no faith in graphology, One of those
who were caught in the 71081/08 of his
net writes hint with an innocence that it
almost pnthctie, tlutt if he had only sent
the signnture along with the letter, the

THE id,ir. STRELSY OF THE WINDS.
11ow varied and diverse are the hnr-
111o1fuus melodies of the w'ind4, ranging
from the whispered gentle sigh of rho
dying zephyr, to the rending blasts and
resonant booming of the hurricane, For
there is music even in the storm; the'"
is a rolling melody in the swelling peals
even of the fiercest tempests, even in
the convulsed spasms of the wildest or-
ganisms of the elements,
Tis in mid•ucenu, us the sun is set-
ting behind a dense indigo -hued hank of
cloud on the horizon, gildifig its edges
with a lustrous gulden lining, its bail-
lianey contrasting sharply tvith the
heavy and lurid, threatening blttckne48
of the cloth'. The scat is suddenly lash-
ed into a turmoil of white frothy wisps
of fount as the gale with scarce a duo•
melt's warning sweeps over the geniis
heating wavelets, at first in tuneful,
rhythmical measures like the soft music
of the swirling river, but, as it gathers
force, sweeping the chords in ever ung•
mending agitation; its cadence nolo cis•
ing, now falling, until at length it 4w'cll4
into a sonorous, reverberating roulade
of nature's fury. And then, when fire
nage of the tempest has subsided, the
fitful gale makes melody midst the rig-
ging of the ship as of an colinn harp,
and strikes a moaning, tearful dirge ns
of lamentation or of mourning.
And how tuneful, too, is the music of
the winds when a fresh and irregular
breeze is playing amidst the tre4 of the
forest; now, as n stronger gust penia
fitfully through the yielding boughs,
raising n peon of wild harmony; or
whispered fugue or delighting t!.1' ear

And in other modes too are nature's
anthems and varied sylnphotlie,e pealed
forth by the winds, midst the ravines
and wild gorges and chasms of the moue.

AFTER HARVEST.
Importance or Saving Nitrogen Is
the Sall.
One thing we feel Inclined to talk
about every year Is the mistake of let-
ting cornfields or other cultivated
ground remain bare through the fall
and winter. A considerable loss of
nitrogen resnits from Ole practice.
After the summer crop Is taken off the
processes of uih'Ificatlon go on In the
Boll, es:peelnlly if etnble manure has
heeu 1SeII. NItrlticntion means the
process by which nitrogen Is made
soluble or at•allnble, When made over
into this form It Is quite easily wash-
ed out of the soil and lost. When soil
Is left bare after harvest considerable
loss will occur in this way, but when
some livI;ig crop Is growing on the
ground this new crop will obtalu most
of the nitrogen and save it for us,
'J hIs nitrogen problem is the most im-
portant thing on our farms. We must
buy It in ono fora) or another, and It Is
constantly struggling to get away from
us. It k the part of good farming to
retinue end save all we eau. If noth-
lug else can be done, sow rye ou all
bare lands. 1f you cannot plow, har-
row and seed. '!'here are some excep-
tions to this. One Is where the sod is
filled with white grubs. In that case
it Is Letter not to seed, but to plow
and keep the surfing) well stirred
through frill end early In spring. The
constant cultivation Is the best method
of ((;;sting these insects. --Kuru► New

Three Kindel ut Lightning,
The Etruscans of old believed that
there were three kinds of lightuing—
one incapable of doing any injury, an-
other more ulischie rens In its character
and consequently only to be issued with
the consent of u quorum of twelve
gods, aud a third carrying mischief in
its train and for which a regular de-
cree was required front the highest ill-

three kinds of lightning, but their vari-

first is known us forked lightning and
runs in zigzag Tines, the second as sheet
lightning, because It Is seen in a body,
and the third as globe lightning, as it
sometimes t'ut's In the shape of a ball.

The Word "Nice."
"Nice" Is ono of the exceptional
words which hero risen on the scale
and Improved with age, It 6 from the
Latin "nescius" and originally signi-
fied Ignorant, To Chaucer It regularly
meant foolish--"wlso and nothing
nice," In Spenser's time it still meant
effeminate. I''rom general foolishness
there was probably first a specializa-
tion to foolish fussiness about trifles,
Then the idett of Ignorance dropped
ant, and the word meant particular
about details, accurate. It was credit-
able to be a "nice" observer or to
show "nice" judge neut, And so in the
end the positively' agreeable nleuniug
of today was evolved.

"Could the consumptives of any
given community be seen at one time,
or pass in panorama be'I:ore'the people,
public consciousness of the magnitude
of the affliction might be aroused. A
physical disaster shocks the world and
lets loose the sympathy of millions. A
few thousand deaths are nothing as
compared with the deaths from con-
sumption." LAWRENCE F. FLICK, M.D.,
Modica! Director of Henry Phlppo Institute for the Study. Treatment
and Prevention of Tuberculosis.
Many reasons surely must influence men and
women to help in the great work being carried on by the
MUSKOKA FREE HOSPITAL
FOR CONSUMPTIVES.
Other hospitals refuse the consumptive. This
institution cares for them.
Not a single applicant has ever been
refused admission to the Muskoka Free
Hospital for Consumptives because of
his or her poverty.
Seven hundred and thirty-eight patients have
been cared for since the Free Hospital was opened
in 1902. Take a week's record :
63 patients In residence; 37 absolutely
free, not paying a copper toward their
maintenance;15 paying 50 cents a day
or less; 5 paying $4.00 a week ; 4 paying
$5.00; one paying $7.00.
These figures tell plainly of a large deficit on maintenance
account each month. To cover
this the trustees are dependent
upon the contributions that
come to them from friends in all
parts of Canada.
Not since the clays of
George Muller has so great a
work of faith been carried on,
