New York Central Train Collided With Freight on Side Track, Entire Train, With Exception of Pullman, Con- sumed by the Flames. Ra.•'tester, Dec. 24.—New York ('en• tral train No. 57, known as the Buf- ' fate local, a fast train running between ;New York and Buffalo, was wrecked ;near the pumping station, about a mile (oats of Palmyra, this afternoon at 2 o'clock, the engineer was fatally in- ljured, and the entire train, with the ex- ception of one 1'uilnuul, was burned to (the trucks. A local freight was taking water at the pumping .station on track No. 3 when suddenly another freight, also a pick-up, and on track No. 3 came in eight. Before it could be stopped it ran into the rear end of tho first pick-up knocking the caboose and a heavy coal car over on passenger trolls No. 2. The crew instantly started to flag the pass- enger train, which they knew to be due, but before they could hardly leave the train No. 57 hove in sight with two monster engines, making up a little lost time. Luckily for everyone on the pas- senger train, Engineer Harris, who was on the first engine had tints to put on the air, thus reducing the speed to quite an extent when the crash came, and the two engines struck the coal car land the damaged caboose. The caboose did not amount to much tin the path of the engines, but the heavy coal car threw both engines off the track rand after ploughing through the mud for quite a distance, they ;tipped over on their side ,and slipped !down the embankment. The baggage ear was thrown partly off the rails, but none of the other ears left the tracks. Every one in the passenger curs was badly shaken up, but no one was injur- ed, Engineer Harris, Of Rochester, who was in the first engino and who by sticking to his post, probably saved many lives, was dug out from under the wreckage, terribly injured. Dr. J. \1. Lae, a Rochester surgeon, and 1)r. Can- field, also of Rochester, were on the train, and they made the injured man as comfortable 119 possible, ili; wounds were carefully dressed and was taken to the tits hospital in Rochester. The two passenger engines were those of the New York C'entral's latest type, num- tiered 3.07'2 and 3,802. '.1'he wl•rekiiigcl'ew was immediately sent for but it was several hours before it arrived, and in the meantime several freight cars caught on fire and burned. The ca\press messenger had a narrow escape, for , When the crash crone he was hurled with several large bozos of express across the car, but he and tic crew did greet work in getting everything nut of the car before it took fire. The east and west -bound Empire State Express were sent over the West Shore Road from Lyons to Fairport, :and as track No, 3 wits the only one that could be used all the other fast trains used the \fest Shore tracks up to midnight. Not one of the passengers lost a sin- gle article of baggage and so fat' as could be learned not one was injured, although several were in such a state of excitement that they could hardly tell nnylhing nbont themselves. NORWAY'S PRINCE THREE-YEAR-OLD OLAF WAS IM- MENSELY POPULAR IN LONDON. Won Crown for His Father—Norwegian Wise Men Satisfied That Monarch They Chose Would Not Leave the Throne Empty. London, Dec. 24,—Norwary's three- year-old Crown Prince, who with his Royal parents has returned to his home, has become extremely popular in Englnd, as indeed lie is every- where. Ile is a "real boy," cunning as ho can be, and, though not timid, he has none of the unpleasant ways of forward children. In Norway the people adore him. Though he is not Norwegian born he has a Norwegian name rind has heartily taken up with the Norwegian customs. The vigorous weather just suits him, and lir loves nothing better jump nt the, chance of being a King, than to play in the snow. but none of them has so winsome a5 ITe came to England with his par- ents to visit his grandparents, Kind Ed- ward and Queen Alex, atdra, ITe wns born in this ronnt.ry on July 2, 1003, in Appleton l(o)se, 1.ontingliani, the fav- orite abode of his mother when she was Princess 'Mand, ile. 1)•115 christened Alex- ander Edward Christian Frederick, but 5vhen his Danish father was elected as King of Norway his name was changed to O!af. This interesting child unconsciously caused Norway's choice of a Icing to fall upon Prince Charles of Denmark, \1"hen Norway seceded from Sweden, her Wise hen looked over the Royal families of Europe to find a suitable King. There is no royal blood in Norway; there are no dukes, mar- guises, earls, barons, counts or other titled persons; they are all plain pew pie. But it seined to be the proper thing to get a Ding who was brought up in n King's surroundings, who would know how to wear it •crown and how to beba)r 00 the throne. Europe has plenty of princelings who would child as the Norwegian 1Vise Tien found this lad to be — and they wont- ed to make sure that the monarch they chose would not leave the throne empty, So Olaf was the convincing argu• ment which won the sovereignty for Charles, now known as lluako11. As the druggist has a permit to sett liquor, the fact of having made stiles 110 not sufficient evidence to convict hint of law'breakingr. If he observes any eau - tion whatever the chalices are that he \gitl prosper lung in his business without being convicted in the courts. For a long title the drug men who sold liquor did it cautiously. Moat of them re(tnired their customers to go through the form of filling out the legal formula, naming the malady for which the liquor wag needed. Some druggists maintain this rule even at the present day. The next step was to the store in which the prescription case and call for what they want without filling out the nffidavit, last of all came the drug store with a regular bar behind the pro• seriptinn ease and no drugs at all, There are probably n half-dozen or more drag stores in Topeka that have well-1(p;pointed bars, In all of these 7:t• ial)li3hments the system is the sane. FIGHTING THE HEREROS. German Officers in Africa Picked Off by the Native Marksmen. Some oddities of campaigning against the llcrerns in Germnn Southwest Africa are detailed by Col, Bayer of the general staff in some sketches which he has been publishing from his personal experiences in the field. One point that particularly impressed hint was the readiness with which the ITereros and llottontots sing- led out the officers at long range. "It wouldn't have been strange," said he, "if we had worn brilliant uniforms, sashes or other insignia of rank. But we didn't. "Every officer carried a rifle and a cartridge belt with 120 rounds of am- munition in it ,exnctly like the men. Many of us also wore bayonets. I-Iands, feces, heir, uniforms, trenpons, every- thing came to be of the snme earthy col- or, \Ve often couldn't recognize one an- other and all sorts of funny blunders took place. In these days, when every preparation is carefully analysed and tested, only those of genuine merit can corns unscathed through the or- deal -and they have every cause to deserve the confidence of the public. And it is only such preparations that the far-seeing business man supports. Banks and business houses all over Canada are f arniliar with the integrity and business acumen of C. W. Mack -tux well-known Rubber ' Stamp Manufacturer of Toronto. The fact that he is substantially interested in the Rheumatism Compound of his cousin, Dr. H. H. Mack, speaks volumes for the value of this remedy. Mr. Mack became interc, tcd some time ago in this Compound -- and he was so thoroughly convinced by the astonishing results accom- plished by it, that he joined Dr. Mack in marketing the compound. This is what Mr. C. W. Mack says: "1 back the following by my business reputation. ' "1 have interviewed many of the doctor's pa. tients-and have yet to find one failure. "Strong facts -but they are facts. "Every drop of blood is reachedaand purified - the whole system freed from Rheumatic Poisons." . It is just this sort of backing that gives people confidence. Foor the business man of to -day does not invest his money in a mediocre article. It has to be something that proves its worth to the public -that will do what it is intended to do -and do it in the best manner known to science. .14 r. axles RheumatismCompound cures the worst form of Rheumatism-promp0 and permanently. It removes the cause of the disease -and tones up the whole body. It dissolves, and carries out of the system, the cleposils of Uric Acid, which cause the excruciating twinges, by grating against the tissues of the joints and muscles. This Uric Acid was originally left in the blood by the kidneys failing to do their work of filtering the poison out of the body. Dr. Mack's Compound carefully stimulates the kidneys, and puts all the other organs in good working order. be scutr. Send for Dr. Mack's booklet, on Rheumatism -it will free and postpaid. (Christian Guau'din(1,) Such wits the title applied to the Alas- tes of lien himself in un addre+ss deliv- ered not long since before a large as- sembly of working tutu in one of the cities of the United States. The title torts used in an altogether reverent way we aro led to understand and we also n►'e told that several tinges during the address the inentioi of the name of Christ was received with cheers and even prolonged applause. The incident made a deep impression upon us as we read it. it told us many things and pr,e-eminently this one, that if the Christ can be really brought face to face with the average man lie must sncc(v'd in winning his applttval, if not His devotion and Iris life. And that Purely is the one thing that the church has to do- to present Jesus in such a way to ever Ulan that each will see and recognize in 1'i,,, the one for himself. eimb0l''4 Clomp; )11)), (1111 we say ? \'''n, the champion CI ev(n•y incur \v'Ib rt Cassa that has 111 it anything of righlernr,ne.ss or of justice, no matter how his 0850 may stand before the world or in the eves of any other. That is the doctrine the church must preach and must live if she is 1') win book these nnlont the toilers who are 110w 0111Side bier influence and control. The social question is fundamentally moral and a religious' one, which is only saying that it must be solved in the light of the teaching and under the gui- dance of the spirit of the Matt of Naz- areth. Somehow we have got to get Ilio up against it, or rather up against the men who make the problem, whether they represent eapital or labor. That, is not only the mast effective way, 11 s the only way in the cad there may bo many answers to the social questions which are today perplexing men, but they y all mast be religious, that; is, they } all must stand in a definite relation to Jesus Christ. And men outside the church are coming to realize this tt.s they nover did before. The profound respect shown by til!: audience of workingman for the non;^ Ff Christ is a hopeful sign. I -f the church really represents Christ, and can make the people understand that she stands for Trim. that she represents the great spirit, of democracy that revealed itself in ills life, then she ought to have little difficulty in winning the peo- ple for Trim. But if she fnil in her re- presentation of Christ, then must she fail most signally and irretrievnhly, And it would lw an awful thing if Christ should be maligned and mtsrepre€ented In the house of his friends, „N .
