Celebrated Golden Jubilee
With Their Unbroken Family.
A most enjoyable afternoon and even-
ing was spent by the children, grand-
children and a few old f•iend4 at the
home of Mr. and Mrs, Robt. Johnston
on Monday, Sept. 24th, when they cele-
brated the tutniverslu'y of their fiftieth
wedding day,
Mr. and Mrs. Johnston were marled
Sept. 24th, 185(3, by the Rev. Mr. Camp-
bell, Methodist minister then stationed
at Clinton. Their wedding trip was
talon from the home of Mrs. Johnston's
father, Mr. Brown, to Clinton and back
to the little bark covered log cabin in
the bush in a lumber wagon, with the
mud axle -tree deep. 'Their pathway
through life, however, did not continue
so soft end many are the hard and
rugged roads over which they have
passed during these 50 years. /Though
the way sometimes rough, they have
enjoyed much of lit.'s genual sunshine
and if we were to judge them by the
health and strength they still enjoy, we
must stay they have stood the jolting
well,
Mrs, Johnston's bridesmaid, her
youngest sister, though still living, was
not able to be present, The following
friends of their childhood were present
to extend their heartiest greetings,
namely, Mrs. Boyd and 1lrs, Morrison,
of McI{illop, and Mrs, Miller, of Clin-
ton, who wore also present at their
wedding, and Mr. Johnston, a brother,
and his wife, of Clinton,
Probably the most unique thing in
connection with this golden wedding is
the fact that not it break has yet been
ina.do in the family and all the children
were present, one—Mrs. Blackbrou gh--
having come all the way from Mon-
tana. The others aro :Nathaniel, of
1-1ullett; Joseph, ,Mrs. W. J. Parks,
Robert. and Mrs. W. Farrow, of East
Wawanosh; Mrs. Chas, Armstrong, of
Shelburne ; Mrs. Brown, of Morris,
and Wm., of Blyth.
A very dainty repast was spread on
the lawn, when their pastor, Rev, S.
Anderson, and wife had the pleasure of
taking ten with Mr, anti Mrs. Johnston
on the old {tome -made table from which
60 years ago they partook of their wed•
ding breakfast, A delightful program
was rendered by the children end grand-
children during the evening, and the
Ipresolte were most nalbstautial as the
following address will indicate
Dear Father and Mother,—We, your
children and grandchildren, aro as-
sembled here today to extend to you
both our heartiest congratulations upon
this, the anniversary of your golden
wedding. We cannot but feel grateful
to the kind providence of our Heavenly
Pat her for thus sparing you these many
years to the t,'reat )oy and comfort of
your posterity, Not many families
have been so highly favored. We re•
joie() also that during all the years of
your exceptionally happy wedded life,
G0(1 Math afforded you more 1111111 ordin-
ary health and strength with which
to discharge the trying duties and to
meet the grave responsibilities connect•
ed with the physical, trental and moral
care of so large as ta►nily. We are just
beginning to realize something of the
devotion, self sacrifice, love and care
you have so unstintingly lavished upon
113 all. IVO Mayo doubtless given you
much anxiety and have sometimes
caused you pain, but over all our weak-
nesses and follies you have thrown t1111
kindly mantle of a father's and mother's
love. Nothing perhaps gives us more
Joy on this glad dray than the thought
that through all these years you have
over retained the honor, respect, tied
love of your children, We aro more
especially grateful to you for, and hold
in high esteem your goodly walk tied
conversation before us, the high stan-
dard of morality, the integrity of your
life in all its relationships with your
life could not but be a benediction to ell
who have been most intimately acquaint-
ed with you. 31tay WO express once
more the warmth of our affection and
the tenderness of our devotion to you
both and the supremo hope of our hearts
that these mellow autumn days of your
life may yet be extended into ninny
3 ect's of happy wedded life, Will y'ott
kindly accept these purses of gu.d from
your children and these "old aril chairs"
from your grandchildren as slight to-
kens of the love and esteemi1 in which
you are held by us all, Our prayer
shall ever be that when the "pitchers
are broken at the fountain" you may go
to "walk the streets of pure gold in that
city which 1111111 foundations whose
13uilder and Maker is God,"

The township of Mornineton is hav-
ing their engineer take the measure-
ments of the various approaches at,d
crossings to the C. P. R. throughout
the township before the contracts are.
completed. In rnost cases the ap•
grouches constructed by the railway
are much too narrow and very steep,
making thein very dangerous, indeed.
The incline in every case is much more
ucute than that called for by the rail-
way commission. The matter will be
reported to the proper authorities at an
early date, The township council is
well advised in taking the matter up
before the work is finally passed upon
by tllo commission.

The Durham Chronicle : Grading on
the new railroad is going rapidly on,
About eight or nine gangs are at, work
between here and Ilanover and several
between here and Priceville, Work is
also being done between Hanover and
Walkerton and before the ground
freezes the ordinary grading will be
pretty well rounded up. We under-
stand the contract calls for completion
of the work before the tat of July next,
but it hardly seems possible to think it
will be done so soon, However, great
changes can be trade in a short time by
the judicious use of men and money,
The location of the road through the
town will not he fixed in all probability
till next spring. -A couple of cur loads
of rondmaking trucks were received
here last week by the C. P. It. Co, and
will be used for construction purposes

Whose boy is strong and tall ?
She has seen hien grow to manhood,
Ile was her joy, her all.
Tonight, as elle prays by her bedside,
He revels with comrades fine;
When he staggers Route drunk in the
ugorping,
Whose heart will ache most, hel'A or
aline?
Away in the graveyard yonder,
Ina cold and narrow bed,
They had laid my little daughter,
The birds sang o'er her head,
Oh ! the day they took her from mo,
And laid her'ueeth the sod
But I'll clasp her to my bosom,
In the home where I mean to go,
And to -night there's ancther 11101 her,
With a girl so bright and fair ;
She has grown to be a woman,
'Neat!' a mother's love and prayer.
She's the belle of halls and parties,
The brightest of all to shine;
If another sees her go "not ready,"
Whose heart will eche most, hers or
m11)0?
Oh, ye who bend over small coffins,
And treasure bright, curls of fair hair,
Think not that your hearts are the sad-
dest,
Or your cross the herrlest to hear;
For in the bright fields of fair Eden,
Your flowers are blooming above;
Go, pray for the drunkard and outcast,
Who once shared Eiden mother's love,

BARONESS MACDONALD OF EARNSCLIFFE
The Wid )W of Canada's Great Statesman
The atucly of the lives of great men reveals In countless instances that
their Inspiration, stimulus, and constant HOIIITO of new strength, was the
love and companionship of a devoted woman. The debt of helpfulness that
the late SIr John A, Macdonald, Canada's great Premier and statesman, o ed
to Lady Macdonald, his second wife, cannot be overeslimnted, according(
the testimony of those who knew tlgenr both. "All that Lady Beaconsfield
was to the Conservative Premier of England," says one, "Lady Macdonald
was to the Conservative Premier of Canada, Their understanding of each
other was complete,"
Ott the Island of Jamaica, the birthplace of two other brilliant women
-the Empress ,Josephine and the third Lady holland-Lady Macdonald,
daughter of Hon, 'I', J, P,crnerd, a member of the Privy Council, was born
' In 1836. The death of her father, while she was still a child, mode it neves-
! sats to take her to Eng'aul for her education. When she was eighteen, she
came to Canada with her mother for a visit, her two brothers, Richard and
Hewitt. Bernard, having entered the legal profession at Ottawa, and there
she met Sir John Macdonald, Thirteen years inter, in 1867, they were
married In London, It was a red-letter year In the calendar of their lives
and the history of Canada, for It was the year In which the British North
American Provinces were united into a federation, Sir John becoming
Premier and governing the New Dominion through its trying first years.
Lady Macdonald acconnpanied her husband to Washington, and was with
him during the long deliberations of the Joint high Commission wide
resulted in the Treaty of Washington in 1871. She was with hien, too, og
that great trip over the new Canadian Pacific Railway, whose very exist-
ence was so largely due to him, and the steel rails of which bound and
unified Canada Into one great dominion as no bonds of law could ever do.
On the death of Sir John, in '1861, recognizing his splendid services
to the Empire, and 1110 zealous devotion of his widow to all the nubile
interests, Queen Victoria was graciously pleased to raffle her to the peerage
by making her a Baroness In her own right -the only Colonial thus honored
--with the title D(ll'011e0S Macdonald of Earnsellffo, Besides her nodal and
philanthropic work, Lady Macdonald has written frequently for the maga-
zlrley on Canadian topics dear to her heart. Since 1890, when she disposed
of En1'nscltffe, her beautiful home in Ottawa, elle has resided In England.
