THE STANDARD 1 will endeavor to give
tiny impressions of sights and scenes
coining under niy notice,
I was fortunate, along with many
others from the London Conference, to
be elected a delegate to the quadrennial
sess;onS of the General Confuronee of
the Methodist Church, which opened
its proceedings in the splendidly equip-
ped St. Jautes' Methodist Church,
Montreal, on Wednesday, 12th inst,, at
10 110 a.m.
Leaving Brussels at 3 p.m. on Tues.
day I ttrrtved at'l'oronto about 8 o'clock
and at 10.15 p,itt, boarded the sleeping
car Windenlero for the East, '!'here
worn scores of others who had set their
faces in the direction from which the
wise mon came in the older days, so
much was this the case that ottr

fol engine had all it, could haul of living
freight, every berth being taken.
It seems to take most people a good
while to get used to this modern and
comfortable mode of night travel, es-
pecially in disrobing and making your
toilet in such circumscribed quarters.
The voyages of discovery necessary to
locate in a berth the various etceteras

Bove the monotony of a journey and
cause you to breathe easier when you
reach more commodious quarters,
We reached Montreal about 8 o'clock

breakfast at the Queen's hied to tho
Conference Church whore licence of re-
newals of old acquaintanceship and in-
troductions were in order, • All that
would add to the convenience, comfort
and dispatch of business was to be
found at the Church. Telephone, tele-
graph and post -offices, Missionary liter-
ature, book room supplies, tables with
paper, envelopes, etc., for correspond-
ence were there and two young lady
stenographers and typewriters were at
cornmaud of the Conference Officials
and the delegates as well,
The vetel•au Rev, Dr, Cannan, Gen -
oral Superintendent, occupies the chief
chair in the Conference and is methodi-
cal, terse, good humored and quick in
his decisions, ruling
the large
body
with a kindly authority to which all
appear to be willing to render cheerful
obedience. Rev. T. A. ;Moro was
elected Secretary by a largo vote and
fills the post most acceptably,
Every delegate is on from 3 to 5 Com-
mittees so that there is ample oppor-
tunity to bo kept busy end at the same
time to gain much helpful information
concerning the virious departments of
church work. Lively debates and dis-
cussions are common In these (,otnnntt-
mitteos which are more informal than
the regular sessions of the Conference:

slot by the tongueing of his hounds.
He at once notified the station agent.
When the Corner arrived the body was
removed to the station and there it was
discovered that the unfortunate map
was Samuel Appleby, of Lot 25, Con. 8,
of Hullott, it well known resident,

wife and children had gone to Clinton

the track to his farm, which runs along-
side the railroad, he had just, gond
about half a toile when he was struck
and killed by the working train corning
from London, Tho place whore the un-
fortunate occident happened, there are
high banks rising on either side, only
about three feet of passage frotn rails
to the embankment, The deceased
must have turned to the right as his
left urn and IN; were elft off arid the

torn off, front the spot where he was

with its mixed population of over 400,-
000 Houle. While the Freech element
predominates numerically the best
manufactories and business places are
in the hams of the English speaking
people and a large measure of harmony
appears to prevail, between the various
nationalities.
Many of the old customs prevail, how-
ever, such as the one horse carts, some
of them carrying tremendous loads of
hay, lumber and other bulky commodi-
ties, a surprise to us Westerners accus-
tomed t0 see the teams and large
wagons used foe such purposes, '1'llore
is a good hind wide reaching street rail•
way electric system, but it does not ap-
pear to materially reduce the number
of cabbies, who with their horse and
rubber tired outfit, plus a desire, with
stentorian voice, to clear the way for
the coming of the passenger, and !supply
information as to public buildings, etc.,
on route. Many small but well 'kept
parks add to the beauty of the city and
attest to the well played part of the
Civic Committee who have an eye to
esthetic and beautiful.
Wednesday, 12th inst., from 1.30 to 0
p.m, the General Conference delegates
were the guests of the well known Allan
and Dominion line Steamship Com-

giant ocean liners with their palatial
elegance and practical comforts sup-
plied to those who cross the Atlantic.
Lunch was served in the dining hall of
the Victorian, of the Allan fleet, whose
courtesy and kindness were suitably
acknowledged and heartily cheered,

that, according to refut res who have

12 ALPH CONNOR
The Story of the Man and His Books
In the Highland settlement of Glengarry, in the heart of a Canadian
forest, Rev. Charles W. Gordon, better known to the reading world as Ralph
Connor, was born In 1860. In his career, the markings of heredity and
environment aro more manifest than in most men, as some hands show the
veins more strongly than others.
To the virility, intenseness, individuality and friend -making genius of
his father, Rev. ,Daniel Gordon, a Scotch preacher and teller of stories in
the primitive pioneer clays of Canada's backwoods forty years ago, was
united in him the sympathy, mental keenness, literary temperament,
spir-
itual insight and hunger foe helpfulness that disfin uishTd his mother.
In the woods through which 11e went, to school, and where his early
childhood days were spent, he
grew intoo that closeT reverent love and e
om-
munion with Nature that has become part of his very life, and pulsates
through all his pages. At eleven, the removal of ills family to another see -
tion gave him better school advantages, and prepared hint for his course
at Toronto University. T -Ie earned money in the fields to pay for his educa-
tion; he was not a hard student, hut passed his examinations seemingly
by instinct. After a three years' course at Knox College, where prizes and
scholarships dropped into his (lands when lie was not looking, he spent a
year in Edinburgh and on the Continent to gain back his fleeting health.
On his return he went to Banff, the National Park of. Canada, inhaling
the pure, clear air of the mountains and the spiritual atmosphere that
seemed nearer to God because nearer to unspoiled Nature. On Sundays he
preached in the little Presbyterian Church to an audience of villagers and
tourists, and it was while a home missionary In the Northwest that he
grew discouraged over the small appropriation made for the work lowing
the miners, His friend, the editor of 'The Westminster" of Toronto, invited
him to wage his wear for funds through the pages of his paper, and, in
accepting, Mr, Gordon decided that a strongly human story might win its way
to the hearts and pluses of the people,
The story was "Black Rock," that virile, crisp series of pictures of life
in the mining camps, that made their author famous. Then came "Tho
Sky Pilot," "The Man From Glengarry," "Beyond the Marshes" and "'Tao
Prospector," all tingling with vitality -stories tender, humorous, picturesque,
pathetic, strenuous in action and simple in thought.
Entered according to Art of the Parliament orCauadei In the year 19or,, by W, C, )tacit, at the Department or Agriculture,'

The Nuisance of Noise,
(Washington Post.)
The British Government has decided to
draft a bill to submit to the house of com-
mons at Its soseton this fall giving power
to local authorities to deal with tho street
noise nulsanee. The conference was attend-
ed by several medical men, who strongly
urged the passage of legislation that would
control the nuisance and thereby tend to pro -
tort the public health, The London Satur-
day Review says that "a strong public opin-
ion 1s fo'ni!ug against these barbarIsms,'' of
useless, deafening, nerve-racking noises. The
time is rapidly coating when society must
take charge of tho nuisance of noise and
regulate It. Tho savage, unbridled excesses
now common can not be tolerate(' much long-
er. The barbarian who untweessnrlly swells
the hideous discord to the mutilation of
adlacent nerves will be jerked up and pun-

Exercise for Business Men,
The average city business man with-
out physical impediments to fight
against can probably get along su00o85•
filly on suet an exercise sehcdnle as the
following:
1. Five minutes each day of purely
011180111111' exercise, shell as can be taken
perfectly well in one's room, without
any special apparatus.
2. Short intervals during the day of
fresh air, brisk walking, deep breath-
ing. ']'his can all be secured in the
regular order of the day's business. A
man can easily spend ns rnitch as half
an hour walking out of doors every day.
This is for heart, lungs and digestion,
3, The reservation of at least one
day a week for rest and recreation, for
being out of doors, for playing games,
ere, This is an essential, This is for
both body and mind. A man who thinks
he can get along without at leastone va-
cation time It week simply proves his ig•
nominee.

Love's Coming.
Sho had looked for his coming as warriors
come,
with the clash of arms and the bugle's call;
But 11e came instead with 4t etealthy tread,
Which she did not hear at all.
She had thought how his armor would blaze
In the sun,
As he rode like a prince to claim his
bride;
In the sweet dim night of the falling night
Sho found him al her side,
Sho had dreamed how the gaze of his strange,
bold eye
Would make her heart to a sudden glow;
Sho found In hIs face tlio familiar grace
Of a friend mho used to know,
Sho had dreamed of his coming would stir
her soul.
As the ocean le stirred by the wild storm's
strife;
He brought her tho balm of a heavenly
calm,
And n peaco which crowned her lite,
