The - December meeting of the WA was held in the schoolroom of Duff's United Church Thursday af- ternoon, Dec. 5. Mrs. Gordon. Mc - Gavin, president, opened the meet- ing by reading the sixth verse of Isaiah 9, followed by the hymn, "0 Little Town of Bethlehem}." The scripture took the form of a Christmas story and the last verse of the hymn -was repeated in uni son; also Mrs. D. Watson read Luke 8-20. "As With Gladness, Men of Old," was sung and Mrs. H. Craig read from Matthew 2:1-12 with a closing prayer by Mrs. G. McGavin. Minutes of the last/ meeting and thank -you cards were read by Mrs. R. Bennett, also, a thank -you letter from the CGIT leader, Mrs. Ted McCreath, thanking the ladies for sponsoring the mother and daughter banquet, and also their support through the year. The treasurer's report was giv- en by Mrs. A. Coutts. Cards are to be sent out to shut-ins, and each group leader to look after sending in the names. It was de- cided that the Sunday School look after the Santa Claus outfit, and that the caretaker be remember- ed at Christmastime. WA Officers Past president, Mrs. F. Walters; president, Mrs. G. Mrs. Alvin McDonald opened the WMS meeting with prayer and Mrs. Emerson Mitchell read the scripture from St. Luke 2:8-20, fol- lowed with comments by the pres- ident. Hymn 47 was sung with Mrs. Jack Bryans at the piano. The roll call was answered with a Christmas hymn and the secre- tary's report given by Mrs. R. Mc- Michael. The president thanked the ladies for continuing - on in their offices. Mrs. C. Martin reported for .the supply secretary. It was decided that thirty World Friends would be purchased by the WMS. A Christmas service of worship was conducted by Mrs. Harvey Craig, Mrs. Jim .Clark, Mrs. Donald Buchanan, Mrs. Wm. Bennett and Mrs. C:- Ritchie. "Gentle Mary Loved Her Child" was sung and an interesting story, "Outcast of the Hills," was read by Mrs. Har- vey Craig. Mrs. John Mc- Donald opened the meeting with a Christmas carol, "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," followed by prayer. The scripture read by the leader was taken from St. Mat- thew 1:8-25. Mrs. E. Perdue gave the topic, "A Christmas Story." The minutes of the last meeting and roll call were given by Mrs. A. C. McDonald. Mrs. Wm. Flood conducted the business part of the meeting. Election of officers was as fol- lows: president, Mrs. Clarence Martin; first vice-president, Mrs. Ken McDonald; secretary, Mrs. Bert Johnston; WA treasurer, -Mrs. John McDonald; WMS treasurer, Mrs. Leslie Oliver; Sunshine treas- urer, Mrs. Jos. McDonald; supper committee, Mrs. Ross McCall, and Mrs. Douglas Fraser; pianist, Mrs. E. Perdue; assistant, Mrs. Jack Bryans. Christmas Coneetat A Christmas concert was pres- ented in Walton Community Hall Tuesday evening by two McKillop schools, with Miss Jessie Little and Mr. Gibson Willis as teachers. Rev. W. H. Summerell, of Win- throp, Bethel and Duff's charges, was chairman. Themusic and singing were supervised by the music teacher, Mrs. Wm.' King. Numbers consisted of choruses, drills, solos, piano solos and duets, dialogues and an operetta entit- led, "Old King Cole," which was well presented. Lunch was served following the concert, after which dancing was enjoyed to music furnished by Ray Patrick, Stewart McCall and Mrs. Archie Somerville at the piano. Christmas Party • The members of the Walton Group held their Christmas party in the schoolroom of -the church on Thursday evening. The room was decorated with red and green streamers and the long tabes took on a festive air with Christmas centrepieces, place cards, Christ- mas serviettes and red candles. A bounteous dinner was enjoyed, during which Christmas carols were sung. Mrs. Wm. Thamer, leader of the losing side in the copper contest, acted as chairlady -for a program which consisted of a reading by Mrs. W. M. Thomas; snowball throwing contest by Mrs. Ronald Bennett; stocking contest by Mrs. Art Busby, and a TV contest by Mrs. Thamer. Mrs. Art McCall and Mrs. Silas Johnston acted as judges for the costumes worn on the winning ;ide, including the best pony tail which was won by Mrs. Earl Wat- son. An exchange of gifts- added to the Christmas spirit. Boxes were packed for shut-ins, consist- ing of fruit, candy, cookies and Christmas cake. - While shopping in the village last week, Mrs. James Coutts had the misfortune to fall and break. her left leg. A cast was put on and she is resting comfortably at her home. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smalldon and. son, of Fort Erie, spent the week- end with Mr. and Mrs. Harold 'Smalldon. Mr. Gerald Dressel, of Langton, visited •at -his home over the week- end. . Mr. David Hackwell has return- ed to Northern Ontario after spend- ing the past week with his par- ents. Mrs. Frank Kirkby who has been a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, for several Weeks, is im- proving satisfactorily. Mrs. James Coutts had the mis- fortune'to break an ankle, as the result of a fall in the village on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. S. Sellers is ill in St. Jos- eph's Hospital, London. She was 'removed there on Monday of last week. Mrs. Earl Mills is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, where she is convalescing follow- ing an operation last week. • Mrs. I. Shannon underwent an operation in Scott Memorial Hos- pital, Seaforth, on Friday. Mr. David Watson is a patient in Scott Memorial Hospital, Sea - forth, the result of a fall at his home on Saturday. Miss Barbara Patterson, Reg.N., ST. COLUMBAN Miss Noreen Dalton, Brantford, spent the weekend with her par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Dal- ton. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Feeney, of Clinton, visited Mr. and Mrs.--Jas:- Feeney. Miss Regina Bowman and Miss Siobhan O'Donnell, London, and Miss Cleo Bowman, Stratford, vis- ited Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowman. Mr. Tom Murphy, Elmira, visit- ed at his home here. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Murray, of Guelph, visited Mr. and Mrs. Michael Murray. Mr. Peter Hicknell, Kitchener, visited Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hick- nell. WINTHROP Young People's Meeting The regular meeting of Winthrop Young People's Union was held on Sunday in Cavdn Church. The meeting opened with the Young People's" Purpose, -followed by Hymn 50. The roll call Was an- swered by 22 members. The Young People are holding a Christmas church service on Sun- day evening, Dec. 22, in Cavan Church. The annual meeting will he held on January 2 in the form of a banquet. The worship service opened with Hymn -600. Marjorie Boyd read the- scripture from St. Matthew, chapter 25, verses 14- 30.. Rev. Mr. Wayne McMichael spent the weekend at his home. Mrs.. Jan . Van Vliet and Miss Carrie Rueyter are spending two months with relatives in Holland.
