BARBARA KIRKMAN
The Barbara Kirkman Auxiliary
of First Presbyterian Church held
their November meeting Tuesday
evening in the schoolroom of the
church. The president, Mrs. W. O.
Johnston, opened the meeting with
a verse, "Are You Using Your
Talents?" gsalm 86 was sung,
followed by irayer by the presi-
dent. A minute's Silence was ob-
served by the members in mem-
ory of Mrs. Marshall Stewart, a
life member of the society. •
During . the business meeting it
was decided to change the date of
the next meeting to December 17,
Mrs. Ed Andrews was in charge
of the meeting and conducted the
devotional part of it. Scripture
readings were given by Mrs. J.
E. Daley and Mrs, Thomas Carter,
and Mrs. Robert Charters led in
prayer._ Interesting current events
were read by Mrs. M. R.. Rennie.
Mrs. W. A. Wright sang a solo "If
You Travel Life's Path With a
Smile," accompanied by Mrs. J.
A. Munn.
Mrs. Andrews introduced Mrs.
K. Williams, who, in a • most in-
teresting manner, presented the
remaining chapters of the study
book, "Christianity in South. East
Africa." Speaking mostly of Thai-
land, Mrs. Williams told of what
is being done, of what is yet to
be done, and of the problems to
be surmounted. Such a small per-
centage of the population are
Christians; very few Christians are
in public life, and none are in the
government. People being con-
verted are from the country or
the "Hill People",
Mrs. Andrews expressed appre-
ciation to those taking part,
The Christmas wreath represents
the crown of thorns, and the ber-
ries the drops of blood.
Legend has it that before the
Crucifixion the berries of Christ-
mas Holly were white instead of
red as now:
The Colorado Bruce Spruce, the
Black Hill Spruce, or the Alcock
Spruce, are the most preferable
trees for use as Christmas trees.
Christmas giving in England
dates from the reign of Henry VII
when Christmas boxes and New
Year gifts were a common enact-
ment of royalty from their sub-
jects.

as no bought ornament can.
These winter evenings your fam-
ily can have a lot of fun maki.:g
decorations for the holiday season
The quality of the finished product
can have an original custom-made
look if you try some modern ma-
terials that are inexpensive and
easily available.
Here are some suggestions using
two plastic products. One is the
familiar Saran Wrap, the trans-
parent film wrap that is so useful
in the kitchen and can be bought
at any groceteria. The other is
Styrofoam, a rigid plastic foam
insulating material that is proving
increasingly popular in the florist,
display and novelty trades. You
can buy Styrofoam in lengths or
in such standard forms and shapes
as balls, stars, snowflakes, icicles,
canes, bells and squares.
Flower Arrangements, Wreaths
You'll need: Saran wrap, No, 28
wire, florist tape. artificihl leaves,
ribbon and candy.
Cut square of Saran wrap at
least two inches larger than can-
dy. Place Saran- wrap over can-
dy and fasten underneath with a
twist of wire. Cut wire so .that
about six inches will be left. Fas-
ten Saran wrap left below the
wire and cut diagonally. Wrap
the wire around again once or
twice.
Hold the flower in left hand and
twisting it slowly between the first
finger and thumb, apply' the florist
tape with' right hand. Stretch it
as it is applied so it will adhere
and blend. Wrap down the stem
far enough to cover Saran wrap.
When several pieces are wrap-
ped, dip each piece in and out or
boiling water making 'certain not
to dip below the wire. This hot
bath shrinks the Saran'wrap and
gives a sparkling tight cover. For
Christmas corsages, favours, place
cards, children's gift decorations,
take several candies covered in
this manner, blend together with
florist tape adding leaves as de-
sired. Fasten with a ribbon bow
and spread and arrange to best
advantage.
For holiday wreath, use green
gum drops and small; red, hard
candies wrapped as above. Apply
to coat hanger circle to get wreath
effect. Trim with red ribbon and
a few Christmas tree balls.
