SEAFORTH OBTAINS ITS POWER from a substation erected by the H.E.P.C. in 1950, located
a short distance east of town. The modern substation serves a large area, encompassing most
of Huron and Perth Counties. The new station was brought into use at the same time as 60
cycle power was introduced in the area,
Prepare Ornaments for
A few cultural practices in the
fallcan do a lot to increase the
value of many ornamental plants
by preventing winter injury and
by helping to ensure good bloom
from some of the more tender
deciduous shrubs, says 11. T. Al-
len, Canada Department- of Agri-
culture Experimental ,Farm, La-
combe, Alta. In a dry fall ever-
greens especially •will benefit from
a good watering before freeze-up.
Some provision should, be made to
provide the smaller evergreens
that are so commonly used for
foundation plantings, such as Juni-
pers, Mugho .,Pine and Cedars,
with shade to protect them'

sunshine, but also from snow re-
flection. This can be done by
placing three or four stakes around
the plant to which is attached a
piece of burlap or Other strong
material.
Snow cover is the best winter
protection for plants and any meth-
od to increase the snow cover
about the more tender ornamen-
tals is beneficial. Such shrubs as
the tender roses, Mock Orange,
Flowering Almond and Daphne,
which are so valuable for the
bloom that they provide, require
protection as usually those por-
tions above the snow line winter
kill rather severely. If such
plants are small and limber en-
ough they can be laid close to the
ground and given some soil cover
for added protection. The tender
roses are best protected by mound-
ing soil about the- plant. In addi-
tion to this, some growers place
an open end box over the plant
and fill it with straw or other in-
sulating material. If facilities per -

mit, roses can be potted and stor-
ed in a cold room until early
spring, and then grown as a house
plant until weather permits plac-
ing thein outdoors..
Any new plant material 'gather-
ed this fall may be heeled in un-
til spring which is the best time
for planting, particularly on the
Prairies.
Mother found Gary shaking and
scolding his pet rabbit impatient-
ly.
"Come on now, tell me what five
'and five are?" .
"Whatever are you doing, Gary?"
demanded his mother.
"Well," explained Gary,"teach-
er said rabbits multiply rapidly,
but this one can't even add."
HAVE SOIL SAMPLES TESTED
NOW FOR SPRING CROPS
If you have not yet taken `that
soil sample 'for analysis, better do
it now before freeze-up, advised
T. J. Heeg, Soils Department, On-
tario Agricultural College.
The OAC Soils Department has
recently been able to incorporate
the latest technique in its soil test-
ing program, and' adopt more ac-
curate testing procedures. Fer-
tilizer and lime recommendations,
for more economical yields, can
now be given with increased ac-
curacy.
A good soil sample is very
portant. Increased accuracy in
the laboratory will not be of bene-
fit to ,fhe grower unless the sam-
ple truly represents the field. The
following procedure is recommend-
ed: Take individual samples from
10 to 15 places in a 10 -acre field,
and more in larger fields. Mix
the samples together well, and
send a pint of the mixture to the
Soils Department, OAC, Guelph.
Your agricultural representative
can supply instructions for taking
a good soil sample,
