The WA and WMS of Constance
United Church held their regular
meeting Wednesday evening in the
basement of the church. Mrs.
Verne Dale presided for the WA
part of the meeting. which opened

The Women's Association of Mc-
Killop E.U.B. Church held their
July meeting at the home of Mrs.
Wm. Koehler. Mrs. Harold Smyth
conducted the worship period,
with Mrs. Arthur Nichols reading
the scripture and leading in pray-
er. Mrs. Ford Dickison spoke on
"The Modern Israel." Several
readings Were also given and a
contest conducted by the conven-
ers. The August meeting is to be
cancelled. and the September meet-
ing is to be held at the home of
Mrs. Smyth, with Mrs. Irvin Rock
and Mrs. Norman Eggert to con-
duct it.
OBITUARIES
Mrs. ED. HILLEBRECHT
There died in Hamilton General
Hospital on Wednesday, Olive
Piper. wife of Ed. Hillebrecht, in
her 60th year. She had been in.ill.
health since an operation last fall.
Born in Seaforth. she was
daughter of William Piper and the
late Mrs. Piper, and was educated
at Seaforth schools. She was mar-
ried in 1918 and had lived in Ham-
ilton for the past 26 years. Pre-
vious to that she had lived in Strat-
ford.
She is survived by her husband,
to whom she was married in 1918;
her daughter, Ethel, Mrs. Ernie
Oliver, and a granddaughter. She
is also survived by her father,
two brothers, Russell and John,
and a sister, Violet.
Funeral services are being held
in Hamilton, and interment will
follow Saturday morning in Mait-
landbank cemetery, Seaforth.
HARRY J. BYERS
Harry J. Byers. 61, of Kitchener,
formerly of McKillop Township,
and veteran of the First World
War, passed away Monday.
He is survived by his wife, for-
merly Lorraine McKay; two sons,
Robert and James, and two daugh-
ters. Jean and Shirley, all of Kit-
chener; three sisters, Mrs. Frank
Haines, Clinton; Mrs. S. Bauman,
Detroit; Mrs. L. Dewdney, in Brit-
ish Columbia; and one brother,
Fred• of Kitchener.

Riley read the scripture lesson on
the Lord's Prayer. Mrs. Earl Law-
son read a letter from a mission-
ary from Formosa. The minutes
were read and adopted and ap-
preciation cards were read. Mrs.
William Jewitt gave the temper-
ance-.;tapic,..aft_er which Hymn 168
was sung. The study book on "For-
mosa" was given by Mrs. W. L.
Whyte. The meeting closed with
the benediction.

The community was saddened to
hear that Mr. Lorne Roe and Miss
Loreen Roe are in Wingham Hos-
pital following the accidenta'Satur-
day night. near Bluevale. We all
wish a speedy recovery, for both,
- and that they will be able to re-
turn home soon.

departure for Germany on August

attended the all -Canadian swine

gary Stampede and motored to
Banff before returning home.

which resulted in a two -all tie.
Miss Barbara Patterson spent
the weekend at Wasaga Beach. ,
Successful Music Pupils
The, following pupils of Mr, L. D.
Thompson. Brussels, were success-
ful in passing recent piano exam-
inations with high marks: Marilyn
Johnston, Jean Hillen• and Margar-
et Hillen. Marilyn Johnston was
also successful in passing her in-
termediate vocal examination with
honors.
WI To Meet
The July meeting- of the Wo-
men's Institute will be held Thurs-
day evening, July 25. Co -conveners
will be Mrs. Stewart Humphries
and Mrs. Herb Travis. Roll call
is to be answered with "a gift for
the Children's Shelter." The mot-
to will be: "If we plant a charac-
ter in our Institute it will blossom
in the community."

To Make Quilts
The Ladies' Aid Society met in
the basement of the Church Wed-
nesday evening. Mrs. Harper pre-
sided and took charge of the de-
votional period, The treasurer,
Mrs. McKellar, gave a very en-
couraging financial report. A pro-
gram committee and flower com-
mittee were appointed. Several
quilts are to be quilted in the near
future.

Mission Band
The July meeting of the Mission
Band of Duff's United Church was
held July 14th in the basement of
the church. Bobby Houston opened
the service with Hymn 243. "Tell
Me the Stories of Jesus," with
Barbara Turnbull as pianist. The
worship service was conducted by
Mrs. Art McCall, taken from a Sun-
day School class in China holding
their worship hour. In China all
children sit in a circle on the floor
and a child gets up in the centre

Sunday School Picnic
On Monday evening the annual
Sunday School picnic of Duff's
United Church, Walton, was held
at the Lions Park, Seaforth. De-
spite the cool weather, a Iarge
crowd was on hand for the picnic
supper, which was served at long
tables. Chocolate milk was served
to the children.
Following the meal the ladies
had. a social time while the •men
played ball. A toffee scramble was
conducted for the small children
by Mrs, Walter Bewley. Races for
all age groups were under the di-
rection of the various teachers and
other willing helpers.
A bean guessing contest by Mrs.
Frank Walters was won by Mrs.
A. Brown, and dropping clothes
pins into a milk bottle' was won
by Mrs. Nelson Marks. Some of
the aquatic minded youngsters en-"
joyed swimming in the new pool.
