LETTERS Tra EDITOR
Toronto, April 29, 1957.
Editor, The Huron Expositor
Dear Sir: In your editorial fea-
ture, "Farm News," of the current
issue, I was highly encouraged to
read of the announcement from Ot-
tawa that "the Agricultural Prices
Support Board had been authorized
to provide a support price for Can-
ada First Grade dry skimmed
milk on the basis of a price of 17
cents per pound for spray process
and 14 cents per pound for roller
process f.o.b., at certain designat-
ed storage points throughout Can-
ada."
As one of your readers who be-
lieves that theresearch workers
in the agricultural laboratories
really hold the key to the solution
of many of the marketing . prob-
lems of the dairy farmer, 1 was
pleased to hear that the Minister
of Agriculture, the Right Honour-
able James G. Gardiner, finds that
the consumption of dry skimmed
milk in Canada is increasing; and
that, according -to. another story
on the same editorial page: "Skim
milk powder supplies were down
to 5,971.000 pounds -a decrease of
6,900,000 pounds from last year,
and a decrease of two million
pounds from first of January
stocks,"
According to Junior's 'figgering',
the Canadian people these days,
consume better than 50,000,000
pounds of "powdered milk" at all.
levels, and in various- forms, di-
rectly and indirectly, each year.
There may be certain folk in the
dairy business who feel that the
above diversion from the fluid
milk market tends to increase
prices to the primary producers.
As to this, I am in no position to
say; but I sincerely hope that it
is reasonably close to the facts.
As I see it, "powdered milk" is a
vital factor in widening the dairy
farmer's market. After all, the
above "supplies" - of 5,971,000
pounds of "skim milk powder"
looks mighty like a reasonable car-
go for a single 5,000 -ton freighter
-with a trading horizon around
the seven seas,
I'd like to see Jack Canuck take
the initiative in the humanitarian
direction of making 100.000 tons of
our food abundance available to
some of the hungry people in the
not -so -Far East. the Middle East,
and still closer home. I think such
`nutritional' cargoes would be more
feared by the foes of freedom than
ten times that tonnage of 'muni-
tions of war'.
