Seaforth Lumber 4d. now occu-
pies new accommodation on Rail -
w ny Street. The change in loca-
tion followed an announcement
made in May of the sale of the
company's property at the north-
west corner of Goderich and East
William Streets, to the Sun Oil
Co. For nearly 80 years the Gode-
rich Street site had been the loca-
tion of a lumber yard and planing
mill.
For some time, according to of-
ficials of Seaforth Lumber Limit-
ed. it had been felt that there was
a requirement for more space
than was available at the Goderich
Street location. In addition, the
existence of a lumber yard and
planing mill in a built-up area was
considered a potential fire hazard,
and as a result insurance costs
were substantially higher than
would be the case if the business
was located elsewhere. These rea-
sons prompted the acceptance of
the offer 'from Sun Oil. The sale
was effective June 1. With posses-
sion being given September 1.
As soon as a decision was. taken
to dispose of the Goderich Street
site. Seaforth Lumber commenced
the construction of a modern fire-
proof cement block building on
Railway' Street. This was ready
for partial occupancy the latter
part of August. when the moving
of the plant was commenced. In
addition to the plant accommoda-
tion proper, extensive lumber stor-
age accommodation is being erect-
ed at the rear of the property, ad-
jacent to a C.N.R. siding.

Storage Space is
Ever Present Need
Whether residing in a house or
an apartment. few families ever
seem to have enough storage
space. Nowadays extra storage
facilities become available at mod-
erate cost and for ease of instal-
ation.
For the apartment or home, and
for use in just about any room in
the house is "Peg -Board" paneling.
This is . a hardboard panel, per-
forated with hundreds of holes that
is easily adapted to all "hang-up"
and shelving needs.
These panels can be painted "to
match any color scheme in the
home. A priming coat is required
and then followed with one or two
coats of the desired color finish.
Large panels in new construc-
tion may be nailed directly to the
wall studs. Over existing walls,
spacers are required.
These may be in the form of a
light lumber framework or in ver-
tical strips spaced at 16" intervals
between rows of boles.
The spacers provide room for
insertion and removal of the metal
fixtures.
For most inside locations, the
1/2 -inch thick panels are practical.
For heavy duty use as in the ga-
rage, those of 1/4 -inch thickness
are recommended.
Satisfaction
Comes From
Doing It Yourself
One of the reasons for the trend
to "do-it-yourself" is the personal
satisfaction that comes from the
accomplishment of a job done by
one's own effort and skills.
Renovation costs of an older
house may be kept low through
the use of inexpensive new prod-
ucts, and by the use of familiar
old ones used in new ways.
Remodeling ideas can be planned
in simple, step-by-step stages, pay-
ing as you go along.
One of the newer treatments in
modern construction is the feeling
of spaciousness_ _through "-open
planning" In remodeling older
houses, this may be achieved by
eliminating unsightly partitions,
heavy woodwork and bric-a-brac
trims. Windows can be "stretch-
ed" ... closets relocated, and to-
gether with cheerful',color and tex-
ture gain better lighting, more
room.
Some suggested remodeling ideas
wherever possible call for "face-
lifting" without basic structural
changes. For examplie — a dark
brick exterior can be faced with
bright stucco; a front porch elim-
inated to extend the living room
out to the new, open eaves.
Planned modernization can help
unify the downstairs living, dining
and kitchen areas by removing
the separating partitions. Color and
texture now are used to bring the
newly -achieved areas all into close
harmony.
Other important changes that
may be made at low, cost — are
floor -to -ceiling windows, rippled
translucent glass partitions, multi-
purpose built-ins to provide both
storage space and work surface.
Easy -to -clean linoleums, asphalt
tile counter tops, plastic -finished
wall -board paneling and special,
acoustical wallboards and' ceiling
tile can be used efficiently and
economically throughout the entire
remodeling plan.

St, the Seaforth Lumber plant =was
erected originally by N. Cluff &
Sons 'warty 60 years ago. A lum-
beer yard had been operated there
since the early years of Seaforth,
and when the Cluff firm decided
to move its planing mill; and pump
shop'° from its former Location at
North Road and Franklin St., the
lumber yard was purchased. The
portion of the plant which houses
the company office originally was
a portion of the 1VIcDermid store
in Harpurhey, and was moved to
Seaforth- Recalling early days of
the firm, Mr. A. F. Cluff said he
assisted in moving the building to
Seaforth, and thought. it would be
'n the early or middle nineties.
The frame buildings on Goderich
St., which accommodated the lum-
ber business for so many years,
have been levelled and construc-
tion of a modern service station
for Sim Oil Co. is under way.
THE RECENTLY ERECTED ACCO1LIMODATION which houses Seaforth Lumber Ltd. is located
on Railway Street. The modern cement block building includes office and showroom, as well as
manufacturing facilities. Storage ' accommodation is being erected between the plant and a C,N.Rr
spur line. (Photo by. Phillips)
