"GOOD SPORTS"
"It might be that Canadian
women try to be good sports
and match drinks with their
men."
Dr. Gordon Bell, special lec-
turer on alcoholism at the Uni-
versity' of Toronto, suggests
the above possible reason why
there are more women drink-
ers in Canada than in the
United States. Dr. Bell has
been associated with the trat-
ment of about 3,000 alcoholics
and problem drinkers. His
word should carry weight.
The Alcohol Research Foun-
dation of Ontario, with which
Dr. Bell has worked, reports
that 64 per cent of Canadian
women take a drink, compar-
ed to 46 per cent in the United
States. ' In addition to this
startling statistic there is the
sobering fact that between 1944
and 1953, the number of wo-
men alcoholics in Canada in-
creased by 60 per cent.
If any of our Canadian wo-
men are trying to match
drinks with their men, Dr. Bell
has a serious ' warning for
them. They are actually in
much more danger of becom-
ing alcoholics than their hus-
bands. A hundred -pound wo-'
•man would suffer just 'twice.
the harm from alcohol than
her, two -hundred pound hut-
kind
us
band -would, for the a feets are
lne+~tly^ pro$'tiani to bar
fight. AWY4,i.
