CHRISTMAS

beautiful and inspiring Nativity
Scene. I liked to sit in the gallery
and watch and listen. He always
chose one of the loveliest girls as
Mary. and how glad any of us
boys were when we were chosen
as Joseph. or one of the Kings.
Once I was chosen as the Little
Shepherd and thoroughly disgrac-
ed myself when I tripped on my
trailing gown and measured my
length in the aisle, much to the
delight of all my schoolmates.
I shall not forget one of the stor-
ies our minister, Mr. Gifford', told
on one of those memorable Christ-
mas nights. It ran like this: "One
dark night a young soldier, posted
at a sentry box before the bar-
racks, heard the hoof beats of his
Captain's horse. He went quickly
out and offered his salute, and
then stood there like a marble sta-
tue until the Captain called out:
'What good is a salute on a dark
night? Open the gate, so that I
can ride in" Then said my min-
ister: `There is a searching
thought here for ail of us.' Lifting
his eyes to us who sat silently
watching in the gallery, Mr. Gif-
ford continued: "Of what use are
all the honors we pay Jesus at
this Christmas season, if we do
not give Him entrance into our
hearts? Will you not conic then,
even as the Kings and Shepherds
have come, bringing your gifts
and adoration. Let Him come in-
to your heart and present to Him
your obedience, your will, your
very life."
As our family wound their way
homeward that night along the
snowy sideroad and up the sixth
concession, the final choir carol
sang in our hearts and from our
lips:
..g
"What can I give Him, poor as I
am?
If I were a Shepherd, I would bring
a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do
my part;
What I can I give Him ... give
, . , my heart."
