Your attention is called to the danger to life and property from Christmas decorations, such as draperies, scenery, cotton to repres- ent snow, etc. Displays of this nature and the lighting arrangements in connection therein, add greatly to the ordinary risks of fire! See that inflammable material is clear of and not hung over lighting devices, steam pipes, stove pipes, electric light bulbs, etc. See that electric circuits are properly fused and not overloaded. Have all temporary decorations removed as soon as they have served their purpose. REMEMBER ! Nothing can render these displays absolutely safe, and that if accidents are not to mar the festive season, constant vigilance and care must be exercis- ed. To Citizens of Seafforth and District We Extend Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season! SEAFORTH FIRE BRIGADE F. C. J. SILLS, Secretary JOHN F. SCOTT, Fire Chief • ,,t: ,, rt,;:L' -",-,sice} !rt to x l it rir-twtri. TO THE EDITOR: Toronto, Nov. 28, 1955. Editor, The Huron Expositor: Dear Sir: I see an income tax piece in one of your daily con- temporaries showing the farmer at the foot of the take-home pay class. Matter of fact, this posi- tion didn't surprise me much—for, as you know, it is the farmers' customary position! Nevertheless, when I studied the following paragraph from "The Green Book"—a 145 -page revenue department publication—it grew in me the urge to make a few obser- vations: "A few other averages, with 1952 incomes in brackets, are as follows: dentists, $7,485 ($7,- 112); salesmen, $4,665 ($4,599); 'en- tertainers, $4,254 ($4,503); fisher- men, $3,703 ($3,732), and farmers, $3,869 ($3,967)." The trouble with figures like the above is that they try to apply a common measurement to entirely different situations. A few of the references to the farmers' earn- ings in the agricultural press soon make painfully clear that there is a mighty wide chasm between what the farmer terms his NET income and flames like the above Huron Holstein Breeders Elect New Officers A Bayfield area man, Bert Dunn, was named the new president of the Huron County Holstein Club at its annual meeting held in the ag- ricultural ,;ffice in Clinton. First vice-president will be Ed. Bell, Blyth, and William Haugh, Clinton, will serve as second vice- president. Hume Clutton, R.R. 5, Goderich, was appointed secretary - treasurer. Directors will include: North Huron, George Tervitt, Wingham; George Hayden, Gorrie; Huron Central, Glen Walden, Lucknow; Dick Proctor, Beigrave; Huron West, Alvin Betties, R.R. 2, Bay- field; Howard Feagan, Goderich; Huron South, Peter Simpson, Sea - forth; Carl Decker, Zurich. Audi- tors will be Simon Hallahan, Blyth, and William Sparks, Bayfield. The new president succeeds Sim- on Hallahan, Blyth area farmer, who was president for the past two years. G. W. Montgomery, agricultural representative for Huron County, who presided for the election of officers, presented honor lists cer- tificates to Alvin Betties and Al- len Betties, both of R.R. 2, Bay- field; James Bradley, R.R. 3, God- erich (two); G. R. McKiel, Clin- ton (two); George Hayden, R.R. 1, Gorrie (two); Baxter and Turton, Goderich (five); Sandy Elliott, Exeter, and Ross Marshall, Kirk - ton (two). Compliments Club J. E. Terry, Lambeth, Western Ontario fieldman for the Canadian Holstein Friesian Association, com- plimented the club on its progress. J. E. Blake, Brantford, director of publicity for, Western Ontario for the Canadian Friesian Associa- tion. was guest speaker. Why mince -pies? In the Middle Ages, one of the Yuletide dishes was a pie made of sweet meat and rich spices, and it was baked in a shape to represent the cradle - manger in which the Baby Jesus lay. It was Queen Elizabeth I who popularized the dish. The Huron Expositor — Phone 41. When I turned the mathematical problem over to Junior, and call- ed for the above 1953 `average" farm income $3,869 multiplied by 615,000 farms across Canada. I'm proud to record that the result was available in fast order, name- ly $2,321,400,000. As I've got plen- ty of mighty good reasons (my operating bills) to know that the operating costs of the nation's farmers in recent post-war 'years have been more than a straight billion dollars a year, it doesn't take much experience to arrive at $1,321,000,000 as the NET income accruing to the farmers in 1953. It seems to me that some of the farm economists would be well en- gaged if they took the aforesaid official "averages" apart, at least so far as they refer to the farm slice of the national income.
