How do you tell a blind person
what to do when the fire alarm is
ringing so loud they can't hear?
Being blind creates many prob-
lems, some of them so unusual
people who have been blind even
for years have not experienced
them. The problem of the fire
alarm bell came to light at West-
ern Ontario's Home and Training
Centre for . the Blind in London
during a false alarm.
Built with funds contributed by
residepts of Huron, Elgin, Middle-
sex and Perth -Counties, the home
is equipped with a fire alarm sys-
tem which rings loud bells through-
out the building, as well as notify
ing the Fire Department.
When a resident accidentally
tripped the alarm lever instead of
a light switch, the bells began ring-
ing—and drowned out the inter -
trying to tell residents what to do.
communication system which was
Solution? The Fire Department
built a timing device so bells ring
10 seconds and shut off for 20 sec -
'ands while loudspeakers can oper-
ate. This repeats until, the fire
department shuts it off.
C.N.I-B. officials. in London de-
scribed the incident as they an-
nounced plans for the annual op-
erating fund campaign which op-
ens in Huron, Middlesex and Perth
Counties September 17.
The campaign is to raise $11,000
by public subscription to make up
the $57,000 needed to operate the
Training Centre and Field Services
of C.N.I.B. The Community
Chests of London, Stratford and
Elgin County, and the county and
municipal councils have already
pledged $46,000. The two-week
campaign ends October 1.
In Seaforth the campaign is be-
ing conducted by Mr. H. E. Smith;
chairman, and -Mr. G. C. Bright -
rail, treasurer.
Wilfred Elliott attended Vi ood-
eden Camp.
