For the past few weeks
Credit Union questions and an
swers column has covered opera-
tions in general and on savings.
This week we are going to discuss
Loans.
Q.: How does the Credit Union
provide credit when needed?
A.: By loaning money to its
members.
Q.: Is there any restrictions on
the loans made to members?
A.: The Credit Union sets the
maximum amount which may be
loaned to any individual member;
also the maximum amount which
may be loaned without security.
Loans may be made only for a
provident or productive purpose.
Q.: What do you mean by
"provident or productive pur-
pose?"
A.: In its widest interpretation:
Any purpose which would benefit
or help the prospective borrower.
Q.: Who decides that the loan
is for a proper purpose?
A: All loans are passed by a
credit committee, usually three
members, who scrutinize the pur-
pose of the loan, the security`, of-
fered, and the terms of repayment.
All transactions in the Credit Un-
ion are confidential.
Q.: What is the usual security
offered for a loan?
A.: A wage assignment form,
assignment of expected income or
monies receivable, signature of a
co-signer, chattel mortgages—all
these are forms of security ac-
ceptable to Credit Unions.
