Mr. Ball said that the real mea-

ouptries of the free world a great op-
portunity for 'further bold advanc-

relationships and thus towards
more intensive and economic use
of resources.
"It would be tragic," he said, "if,
just at the time when the military
and 'political defences of nations
of goodwill were being strengthen-
ed, the economic ,gains of the re-

to all of us, in all countries, who
stand with. private enterprise, to
demonstrate here and now that
the system that we rightly believe
produces moat and contributes
most fully to well-being floes not
inevitably beget periods of slump
and mass unemployment.
"That,as I see it, is the great
and immediate challenge of the
present day. And that challenge
will pot be met if the bogey of

vidual nations' behind the barri-
cades of 'high tariffsand intensi-

Optimism Plus Sober Realism
In a brief review of the business
scenes during 1953, the 'president
emphasized that comuetition ,had
been keen, in both 'domestic and
foreign trade, and that certain in-
dustries were encountering diffi-

THE VOICE OF
TEMPERANCE
Drinking is the downfall 01 many
teen-agers, who get into trouble
with the law. This is the opinion
of Alfred H. Sumpter, recently ap-
pointed ' probation officer for the
York County courts of Wiilowdale
and Newmarket. "It brings out the
ugly side in them," he says. "They
may steal through conceit or greed
or malice, but they wouldn't do it
if they were sober." Sobriety is
one of the conditions of ,probation
under which the offender is given
suspended sentence with a period
of su'perviion under . the probation
officer, usually a year or more. Mr.
Sumpter's cases include adults of
all ages, but the majority are in
the late 'teen-age group and are
first offenders. York County, Mr.
Sumpter's territory, bas a variety
and multiplicityof liquor outlets.
It would seem that their harvest is
heavy. This is one crop our Hur-
on County does not grow well.
