IITonder tints° of ..the
Christmas Season
( ' g}ron?'a Star)
This is the season of the year at
which earth and heaven seem
somehow nearer than at any other
time. It is a season of gentleness
and love. Hard hearts are soften-
ed.
oftened. Old grudges'... are forgotten.
There is more unselfishness now,
more consideration for °there. it
might almost be called a magic
season, so 'splendid are the changes
wrought by it. Christmas itself is
a magic word, which, when it is
spoken, invites joyous thoughts. and
a renewing of the soul.
What is the explanation of it all?
'What are the "magics," the won-
derments, of 'Christmas? There
are at least three.
The first magic, of course, is the
Child of Bethlehem; and this not
only 'because a Redeemer was born
but because the helplessness of
childhood has its own partipular
magical appeal to human hearts;
and motherhood a special hold) up-
on the affections. There is some-
thing unspeakably touching, too,
which awakes and challenges the
imagination, so that .those who
read it or hear it find themselves
borne aloft from the earth they..
know to the spirit world in which''
God speaks and angels sing. A
King in a manger! The Son of
God in• a manger! Even for those
who do not hold Him to he so, the
most famous man of all time from'
whose birth even our years 'and
our centuries are dated—in a man-
ger! What could be more moving
than that? The first magic of
Christmas is the Nativity, with all
the ennobling thoughts which it in-
vites. The second magic derives
from the first.
This second magic is the giving
of gifts. Tlie Child was the Great-
est Gift. It is natural that His
festival should be a gifttime, too,
and that the gifts which give most
pleasure both to the givers and to
the receivers should be the gifts to
children. Magic is the right word
for the spirit of giving which per-
vades and animates the Christmas
season. Surely there is nothing
else like it at any other time of
the year, nothing which gives so
much joy and so stirs the emotions.
There is a third magic—perhaps
the most powerful of all: the magic
of Christmas music. And it, too,
derives from the first magic, for
the music tells the Chritsmas story
—tells it in so many lovely ways.
Those who sing and those who lis-
ten are carried to the very site of
the Nativity. On Christmas Eve of
1866, Phillips Brooks stood in the
old church at Bethlehem where
bells were ringing and hymns were
rising to heaven. For two years
he carried the memory of it in his
heart, and then he wrote the lines
which help make Christmas what it
is today: •
"O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie,
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by."
The carols carry the singers to.
the fields as well as%to the manger.
Impressive as the Bible story is, it
is doubtful whether the reading of
it from the pulpit means as much to
the congregation as the singing of
that carol written by .Nahum , Tate
If Santa Misses
Reindeer Supply
WM Be At Fault
If Santa Claus misses some
youngsters this year, it could be
offered plausibly that he was not
able to round up enough reindeer
for his yearly trip around the globe.
The reindeer shortage has be-
come in recent years, much too
acute, It has been estimated that
wolves have destroyed 600,64)0 of
Santa's helpers in the last decade
or so, leaving approximately 50,000.
The difficulty of keeping the ani-
mals alive in a temperate climate
makes it unlikely that any of the
few remaining will be transported
from. their native regions to other
lands for the holiday season, as
has been done in the past.
Boys and girls will have to be
satisfied with stand-ins. The few
department stores featuring Santa
with complete outfit this year will
be using native deer as substitute
for Dasher, Prancer and company.

Mohr's beautiful "Stine Nacht,"
comes to us as 'Silent Night! Holy
Night!" in English. A famous one
is from the Latin, "O Oome, All Ye
Faithful." Two have become so
embedded in the celebration of
Christmas they are known simple'
as traditional English carols: "The
First Nowell" and "God Rest You
Merry, Gentlemen." Some of these
hymns are as they were written.
Others have been smoothed on their
way , down to us as stones are
smoothed by the sea. One of the
most familiar lines. of all, "Hark,
