Tuesday saw two more athletic
teams called into action. It was the
girls' 'big volleyball rally in Gode-
rich. There were two teams from
each school in the EI.-S.S.A. group-
ing. In the opening game of the
senior events, Clinton toppled Sea -
forth. 34-19. Next, Goderich stepped
past Wingham, only to fall to Clin-
ton in the championship match.
Our gang made a much better
showing in the junior contest. The
girls just missed the championship
by one point. After taking a 15-9
victory from Wingham, the juniors
had a nip -and -tuck battle with God -
wasn't until the final whistle that
Goderich took the 17-16 win.
Thanks, Ruth!

Beriewing the work of; Caplin
scientists Ja
Ng, r4t reeistant wheats, Dr..
Hanna stated that stent. mkt, first
reported -en wheat in Western Cale
ada in 1891, had by 1916 become a
limiting factor in mbent production,
destroAng -in that year 100;000,000
bushels,. The average annnallose
from 1916 to 1936, when resistant
varieties were introduced, was ap-
proximately 35,000,000 bushels.
Investigations carried out aver
the 'past 28 years at the Rust Ite•
search Laboratory art Winnipeg by
the Botany and Plant Pathology DI -
vision and Cereal Division have
yielded much new information
about wheat stem rust, and notable
progress has been made in the
breeding of resistant varieties.
It has been established that the
red or summer spores of stem rust
rarely, if ever, overwinter in West-
ern Canada. The rust spreads
northward each spring from :Mexi-
co and 'the Southern States where
red Spores are able to survive the
winter, and reaches Southern Man-
itoba by late June each year. 'Prom
there it extends northward and
westward into Saskatchewan.
The difficulty of obtaining seed-
ling as well as mature plant resist-
ance to all of the prevalent races
of stem rust seemed an insurmount-
able barrier to progress. Then it
was discovered that certain wheats
are resistant in the mature plant
stage even though susceptible as
seedlings. As wheat in Western
Canada is normally,well advanced
towards heading by the time stem
rust infectibn becomes common, the
Mature plant type of resistance ap-
peared to be adequate. The variety
Renown, released in 1936, and the
varieties Regent and Redman re-
leased later on possess this type of
resistance.
The limitations of mature plant
resistance become apparent when
it was found that these wheats
were susceptible to race 15B in
/both the seedling and adult plant
stages. That breeding for rust re-
sistance is an exceedingly complex
problem is illustrated by the re-
cent discovery that C.T. 186, a
promising new variety possessing
resistance to 15B, is susceptible to
a strain of this race -15B-3.
More than 200 races of wheat
stem rust have been identified and
it now appears probable that there
are in existence many times that
number. The stem rust fungus has
a vastly greater capacity for var-
iability than was formerly suspect-
ed. Additional races are continual-
ly being Produced on the barberry,
As new eafieties of wheat are in-
troduced rare or Unknown races
that can attack them tend to -in-
crease or- become predominant, just
as 15-B did in 1950.
Control of wheat stem rust has
become an international problem.
Canada, the United States, Mexico
and a, number of South American
countries are already co-operating
in testing breeding material and
studying rust races. There are
many ad -vantages to be gained from
having this co-operative work ex-
tended to other wheat growing
countries where stem rust occurs.

hockey schedule on home ice.
The Baldwins will play host to the
Sarnia Sailors in the opening tus-
sle.
Last week the Seaforth club took
the opening game of the schedule
7-0 from the Chatham Shermans.
The Maple City crew didn't give
the locals much opposition. The
main, reason for this was lack of
practice; by the time they have
their next game with Wigigham,
they expect to be a much improved
club.
From what Coach Ralph McFad-
den has to work with, the Seaforth
Baldwins should come up with a
team second to none in the group-
ing. Looking as the exhibition
games scores with London, Sea -
forth shouldn't have much trouble
with last season's keen opposition.
As for the Wingham Junior B's,
little is known about the new club,
but from reports that have been
slipping out, Wingham hopes to
make a grand -scale entry.
Now, let's take a look at the
Sailors. Here is the trouble spot
of the series. For the last four
seasons Sarnia has been icing one
of the best Junior 'B' clubs in the
province. It isn't expected that this
season will be any different.

Saturday night opens the 1953-54
season for the Hensall Intermedi-
ates. This year Hensall will be
using the Seaforth Arena for home
base, With the starting of a new
schedule, Hen'Ull hopes to see one
of their most successful hockey
seasons. With the addition of four
of last season's Seaforth Juniors,
plus some strong imports, Hensall's
outlook is bright. Centralia makes
an appearance here Saturday night.
