To the young, nothing cancels
the past like a school Abell clanging
in the morning. Suddenly the fu-
ture, although possibly disturbing
to youthful appreciation, is as chal-
lenging as a clean -washed and
empty blackboard. Time itself is
renewed, and this is the season
when all youth has its birthday' and
is. older and wiser in bbe twinkle of
an eye.

she skips into the magic world of
the first gradeohnny is tearing
about flexing muscles he didn't own
an June and flinging taunts at the
older boys; Patricia, flattered by
time and nature, is already check-
ing off who'll be going with who
before the term is done; and Bill?
he's gained worldly status, and buys
a pipe for college.
,Something happens to youth
when tike classroom calls. It shows
even in the clothes they wear.
When a grownup puts on new
clothes, it can be for any reason -
or for none at all. Bata boy or
girl dons new clothes his month
because there is a brand new, dif-
ferent person to wear them.
In a single summer, youth has
leaped a gulf no' adult 'will ever
span again. Youth • returns to
school with a new mind and a new
body. Its old ideas are outmoded
witch its old clothes, and both would
seem strange now.
