will think about us. Fussing over
our children, thinking we know bet-
ter than they ever will and refus-
ing to admit that the world we
have 'helped to create is not so
beautiful and peaceful as it certain-
ly would be iP we were half as good
as we think we are._
No, Big Bill was not like us at
all, yet he had the warmest heart
and the finest sympathetic under-
standing of little fellows that you
would ever want to see. He un-
derstood us and our little ways, but
he was a big man and he knew it.
He never let phis bigness down.
In the great legends of North
America there is a 'giant called
Paul Bunyan, who went all through
the rugged woods performing mir-
acles of strength. There is also
another legendary figure called
Johnny Appleseed, who followed in
the wake of the gigantic Paul Bun-
yan, after the land had been clear-
ed. Johnny Appleseed was an in-
sigraificant tittle man of no wealth
4r fame. All he had were the ap-
pleseeds he carried, and every-
where he stopped he planted them
and the countryside was filled with
rich, productive orchards. Then
Johnny would slip away to new
cleared territory to plant more
seeds.
Big' Bill Forrest was a legend in
himself. lie, being of the race of
giants, was a trail breaker, a man
who lovesi to pit his great strength
of muscle, mind and heart against
the forces of .primitive nature. He
wasn't afraid of 'anything, and even
in the last days the mighty frame,
the powerful shoulders and the
strong hands were ready for any
kind of action. And at the same
time, when you sat down with Big
Bill for a chat and he wanted to
say something particularly impor-
tant, he would quote poetry to you
to make sure you got the point.
Once, they tell me, at the hotel
in Toronto where he always stay-
ed', Big Bill had just closed a deal
with some sharp traders who were
interested in some mining proper-
ties he held. After they left he sat
down and thought it over and de-
cided he had been cheated. A. great
rage possessed him and in his fury
he picked up the heavy furniture
in the room and smashed it all to
smithereens. Then, with the de-
meanor of a perfect gentleman, he
quietly went down to the manager,
told him what had happened, and
said: "Put it on my bill."
That's the kind?et fellow he was,
a mixture of the 'Mighty Paul Bun-
yan and the gentle Johnny Apple -
seed• Ile was a maniwho realized
that a Country like ours has to he'
opened up by strong, implacable
men, and he knew too that the
gentle arts have to move right in
afterwards and bring a proper civ-
ilization to the new land.
And in spite of all his wander-
ings, all his adventures, he liked
this district best
Not too long ago I had a chance
to tell the students up at the High
School just about the last words
Big Bi11 ever said to me, and they
are worth repeating now that he
is gone. Worth remembering too.
We were coming into the town
on the train and Big Bill looked
out on the beautiful lush green and
prosperous fields which are our
heritage.
"Look at that!" he said, with
deep emotion. "There's the damn-
edest, greatest country that God
ever made outdoors!"
And' he was right. God rest his
soul.
