Group No. 1 of the W.A. of North-
side United Churoh held its Easter
meeting 'Tuesday evening at the
home of Mrs. H. 'Connell, with 26
present. Mrs. D. Ritchie gave an
interesting address on. "'The ,Wo-
men of the Cross When Christ was
Crucified." The Scripture lesson
and a woman's player -letter were
read by Mrs. E. H. Close in open-
ing the meeting, and Mrs.. C. Wal-
den leading in prayer. Mrs. Garin
ham began the business• discussion
by reading the poem "Wages," and
leading in prayer. The Group will
cancel the May meeting an'd, join
in a general meeting of the W.A.,
when .Mr. Hall will show pictures
taken when 'on a trip to Australia.
'Mrs. H. Connell was appointed a
member to the church paripr „com-
mittee.. The Ca1d'weil Linen Mr is
Ltd. will presen their color talking
film on the making of towels on
June 25, the time and place to be
decided upon by a representative
from each group. Mrs. Jas. Broad -
foot closed the meeting with pray-
er. The 'hostess, assisted by Mrs.
Glenn Pryce and Mrs, F. S. Har-
burn, served lunch. 'Mrs. C. Hen-
derson thanked the speaker for her
excellent message, a nd' the hos-
tess for cher hospitality.

Death of John •Currie.—The death
took place in Scott Memorial 'Hos-
pital on Thursday, April 3, of Join
Currie,•well-known resident of town
in kis 70th year. Mr. ,Currie had
been • in flailing .health for the past
six months. Born in Harpuehey, he
livedo in Brussels for a number of
yearn where he was engaged' as •a
butcher. Since coming to town he
served as night policeman for eight
years. Mr. Currie was married in
1924 to Gladys. Whitfield, who sur-
vives, together with two daughters,
(Jean) Mrs, George 'Finley, Toron-
to, and' Miss Helen Currie, at. home;
also two sisters', Mrs. Percy Gar-
side, London, and Mrs. Christena
McDowell, of Brussels. There are
two grandchildren. The :funeral will
take place on Saturday from the
G. A. Whitney Funeral home with
Rev. 11 A..MaeMillan, of Nortlisidle
United .church, conducting the ser-
vice..interment will be, in Maitl'and-
bank -cemetery.•

Power Plant Engineer for the U.S.
Rubber 'Co. until his retirement two
years, ago, • died Thursday, March
27, be St. Joseph's Hospital, after a
short illness. Mr. Skinner, born in
Birmingham, England, went to De-
troit .27 years ago and had worked
for U:S,.,.Rubber for .24 years. He
served as marine enginner with the
British Merchant 'Marine during the
First World War and for a number
of years+ following the war was:as-
sociated 'with. the Holt-Lam�pertt
.shipping line. He was a member of
the Engineering Society of Detroit
and was a life member of St.George
Ledge 503, A.F. & A.M, of, Helens -
burgh, Scotland. He attended St.
James' Presbyterian tehuroh. Ser-
vices were helld at 1 p.m. Saturday
in the' Verheyden Funeral Home,
16300 Mack Ave., Detroit. Burial
took • place at White Chapel Mem-
orial cemetery. Surviving. are his
Wife, Mary Louise, and a son, Ross,
of Wilmington, Delaware. .

Women's Auxiliary of St. Thomas'
Anglican iChuroh met Tuesday af-
ternoon in the Vestry with Mrs. G.
McGavih• presiding. Rev. W. A.
Jones opened the meeting with
Scripture from St. John, and the
president led. in .the 'Litany and
members and Lord's Prayer. The,
minutes and' roll call were follow ed
by the reports of the treasurer and
Social Service secretary. A letter
from Rev. J. N. H. Mills was read,
saying that Bishop -Elect Thomas
Greenwood, of the Diocese of ' the
Yukon, will be present -at the An-
nual, to be held; in the Church
of St. John the Evangelist, in Kit-
chener, on May 7 and 8. Miss Ruth
Scott, Dean of the Anglican Wo -
.men's .Training College, Toronto,
will speak in the Church of the
Holy Saviour, Waterloo, on Wed-
nesday. Miss Joan Froom. of Rune"'
on Church House, will also be pre-
sent. Letters' of thanks were read
from Mrs. Ken Powell, Mrs. R. Dal-
rymple, Mrs. Charles Cunningham
and Mrs. Ray Nott. A splendid
contribution is being:: sent to Hur-
on College froth the proceeds of
the recent Rainbow Tea and sale
of homebaking. Miss Joan Froom
will be present at an evening get-

tion are especially a's'ked to be pre-
sent. .Mr. Jones pave the study
book, showing how evangelism
is spreading in South America
through personal contact and'tmis-
sion schools. The American Bible
Society is spreading Bibles through-
out the country and there is wide-
spread need for more religious
training. The effects of this train -
ring so far is to greatly decrease
heavy drinking of alcoholic bever-
ages, ban Sunday sport and have
young people- mingle before mar-
riage that the latter are •entered
into on a sounder basin. The col-
lection and thankoffering was re-
ceived and dedicated, and Mrs
McGa'vin closed with ,the- benedic-
tion. A quilt was completed dur-
ing the meeting.

Former Resident 'Dies in Mea-
ford.—The death of -William N.
Knechtel occurred' -at the Mane of
his 'daughter aild'- sonrin-law, Mr.
and Mrs. E. E. Secord:, Trowbridge
St., .Meaford, early Sunday morn-
ing, in his 85th year. The late Mr.
Knechtel was born •at ,,Brussels.
Following.hi's marriage to Eliza
Dundee, the young couple carried
on farming operations in McKillop
Tnavnship, until retiring and mov-
inlg to Seaforth, where Mrs. Knech-
tel passed away some 16 years ago.
Over the years .Mr. Knechtel held
membership ,in the Presbyterian
Church of •Canada,and was identi-
fied with churches at' Brusn'el's,
Walton, Seaforth and St. Andrew's,
Kitchener. in Seaforth he served
as a member of the 'Session, and
at Walston was made Clerk of the
Session. !Since going to :Meaford
Mr. Kneehtel made many friends,
who join in mourning his death.
He»was a great reader and a regu-
lar visitor at the Meaford Public
Library and one who kept himself
posited on the news of -the day. He
was a man of high ideals, praising
the good and shunning the evil in
accordance with early tradition and
home training. His was a full life.
Deceased is survived by two sons
and three daughters: 'Daniel, head
of the Crown Life and Mutual Ben-
efits, Vancouver, B.C.; George,
manager of the Progressive Tire
Corporation,( Moose Jaw, Sask., and
Mrs. Wm. Martin, Middleport; Mrs.
E. E. ISecord, Meaford, and !Miss
Alice Knechtel, of Kitchener. Fun-
eral services were candu•otedl at the
Ferguson Funeral Chapel on Mon-
day evening by Rev. 'S'tephen J.
anathers, pastor of •Meaford ,Uriited
Church, assisted by Rev. George
McLean, pastor of the Baptist
Church, •Neustadt, a brother-in-law
of deceaeed. Interment took place
in . •Maitland'bank cemetery, (Sea -
forth, on Tuesday afternoon, with
family members present except
Daniel, of Vancouver.
