The opening hymn was No, 374. Mrs. Robert .\Ilan rend the Scripture lesson from :Matthew 25, verses 14 Lo 30. Mrs. B. Keyes spoke on "The 'lel- The White's Burden (By Lewis Milligan) "Kipling would be interested to see the 'white man's burden' slow- ly slipping from ' his shoulders." This pregnant remark is contain- ed in a private letter from an old ,journalist friend who has been liv- ing in retirement in the country for some years and viewing world af- fairs calmly from that distance. It is a remark that presents tine pic- ture of the British Empire in its true perspective. Kipling would not be much surprised at what is hap- pening' to the Empire today, for he was not only a great poet, but was also a prophet. He foresaw what is now occurring, and he fore- cast it in these lines: Take up the White Man's 'burden— And reap his old reward; The blame of those ye better, The hate of those ye guard. That prediction has been fulfilled in India, and Egypt is now demon- : Crating its truth in the fanatic hatred displayed by the rioting mobs in Cairo and Alexandria. The unreason of that hatred is plainly ;ren in a glance at the history of Egyptand the Sudan in the hast 70 years under British protector- ship. When Britain entered Egypt the government was corrupt *and bankrupt, and the Sudanese were terrorized by wild dervishes. The British occupation brought order out of chaos, developed industries rind trade in those countries, gave the people self-government, and as late as seven years ago Egypt was saved from invasion by British sacrifice at El Alamein. Yet in that fateful battle the Egyptian never lifted a hand in their own defence. Britain has indeed reap- ed the blame of those she has bet- tered,. and the hatred instead of the gratitude of those she has guarded. My retired journalist friend is pessimistic in his outlook. "In world affairs," he says, "it is just possible that democracy is a farce. Men talk vaguely about el! allishing affairs, when at the last call, force is the basic faet behind the Most civilized government. A world election today would delegate the English-speaking peoples to a back seat. Would their democratic .ideals induce them to take it?" One answer to that question is tate North Atlantic Pact, plus the preparations for strengthening Western defence forces in the Middle East. The United States certainly is not going to take a back seat, but the result of the general election in Britain would indicate,. that half the people of that contry are willing to take it lying clown. With Churchill in the saddle, however, they and the RUoie Western World will again have a shrewd and forthright lead - (Continued on Page 5) Too Late To Classify CLERK'S NOTICE Of First Posting Of Voters' List Town of Seaforth NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT I have rompli;d with Fe'tion 9, of the Voters' Lists Act, and I have posted up in my office, in Senforth, on the 9th day of November. 1951. the list of all per- sons entitled to vote in said Municipality for members of parliament and municipal elections, and that such list remains there for inspection.
