Presbyterian W. M. S. Meets.—
The August meeting of the-W.M.S.
of First Presbyterian Church was
held Tuesday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. E. Geddes. Mrs.
Robert Eberhart opened• the meet-
ing with a poem entitled "Hope."
Miss Doris Pullman read the cur-
rent events. A short memorial ser-
vice for the late Miss I. Ballantyne
and Mrs. Charles Aberhart, former
secretary and treasurer of the so-
ciety, was observed with a season
of silent prayer. This was follow-
ed by an impressive solo, "For All
the Saints Above" by Miss Doris
Pullman, accompanied by Mrs. E.
Geddes. The Bible lesson was read
by Mrs. Manson, and Mrs. Robt.
Smith led in prayer. The varipus
members of the society took part
in a quiz on the study book,
"Taiwan Re-entered." The devo-
tional part of the -meeting was
closed with a hymn, after which
re •.'r•eshments were served by the
hostess.

Barbara Kirkman Auxiliary Has
Meeting.—The August meeting of
the Barbara Kirkman Auxiliary
was held on Tuesday evening at
the home of the president, Mrs. J.
F. Scott, of Thornton Hall. There
was a large attendance of mem-
bers, visitors and former members
of the Auxiliary who were home
for vacation. Mrs. H. R. Scott
conducted the business part of the
meeting. Mrs. J. E. Daley, con-
vener of the MacKay group, who
had charge of the program, occu-
pied the chair for the remainder
of the evening. Mrs- John Thomp-
son read the Scripture lesson and
Mrs. L. Hemberger the Glad Tid-
ings prayer. Current events were
taken by Miss S. I. McLean and
the offering by Mrs. Jam -es Mur-
ray. Mrs. F. Kling sang a solo
"Some Time I'll Understand,"
which was much appreciated. A
pleasing feature of the meeting was
the presence of Mrs. Van De Berg
who has recently come to Seaforth
from Holland. Mrs. Van De Berg
sang two hymns in her native
tongue, accompanied on the piano
by her husband. The topic, on
Formosa was prepared by th;e
president and read by Mrs. Daley.
Short selections of interest about
Formosa and the mission station
were read by Mrs. Alex Kerr, Mrs.
R. R. McKindsey, Mrs. Jas. Mur-
ray, Mrs. John Pullman, Miss P.
Patterson, Miss Janet Cluff and
Mrs. R. Charters. Mrs. D. Glenn
Campbell gave the closing prayer.
Mrs. Scott served a cup of tea and
during the social time enjoyed by
the guests Mr. and Mrs. Van De
Berg again delighted the audience
with their singing. A hearty vote
of thanks was given to Mrs. Scott
for her kind hospitality.

an Thursday, August 11., troll her
late residence, with interment in
Lucknow cemetery.
Dies' in Toronto.—The death oc-
curred on Monday of George Mil-
ton Chesney, 73 Burnside Drive,
Toronto, following a long illness.
He was born in Seaforth "02 yearn
ago and was the eldest 'son of
Mrs. George M. Chesney and the
late Mr. Chesney, of Toronto, and
former well-known residdnts of
Seaforth. Mr. Chesney attended
Seaforth public school and 'Colleg-
iate Institute, joining the staff of
the Dominion Bank here thirty-
seven years ago. At the time of
his retirement he was manager of
a branch of the bank in Toronto.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Mary Bell Habkirk, and his
mother, Mrs, G. M. Chesney. One
brother, Earl, passed away about
a month ago. The funeral was
held on Wednesday -with service
at 8 p.m. at College St. ' United
Church, Toronto. Interment - took
place in Maitiand•bank cemetery,
Seaforth, on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Rev. D. Gowan, of Toronto, of-
ficiated.

Hicknell - Strauss. — A bridal
couple whose home will be in Kit-
chener, took their wedding vows
Tuesday, August 16, in St. Agatha
R.C. (church, with Rev. Leo J.
Siess officiating at the double ring
ceremony. Married were Miss
Carolina Ottilia Strauss, youngest
daughter of Mrs. Ottilia Strauss,
St. Agatha, and the late Andrew
Strauss, and Leo 4Iphonsus Hick-
nell, St. Agatha, eldest son of Mr.
and Mrs. Peter Hicknell, Seaforth.
Phlox and white gladioli decked
the communion rail and altar, and
the children's choir sang, music
played by Sister M. Stephania" Mr.
Alec Strauss gave his sister in
marriage. Satin rosettes trimmed
the wide bertha collar of her white
slipper ,Satin gown,. The 'fi'tledf
bodice extended into long pointed
sleeves and the full skirt fell in a
slight- train. Her poke bonnet of
satin, edged with lily -of -the -valley,
held her scalloped veil of embroid-
ered silk net, which extended over
the train of her gown. She carried
a colonial cascade of red roses and
white gladioli. Wearing a light
blue taffeta gown, Miss Adeline
Strauss attended her cousin. The
driss was styled with off -the -shoul-
der neckline, short puffed sleeves
and bustle effect over a full skirt.
Patterned after the bride's was
her headdress of taffeta. She wore
long gloves and carried pink car-
nations and white gladioli. The
flower girl in a pink taffeta frock
was Miss Agnes Hicknell, sister of
the bridegroom. A small bertha
collar topped her gown and the
full, skirt was gatheredin by a long
sash tied with a bustle bow. Her
pink poke bonnet was like the
bridesmaid's, and she carried a
bouquet of similar flowers. Mr.
Francis Hicknell, of Seaforth, was
his brother's best man. Ushers
were Mr. Maurice Hicknell, Bres-
lau, and Mr. Edgar Dither, Peters-
burg, cousins of the bridegroom
and bride, respectively. Sixty
guests were entertained at a din-
ner and reception at the bride's'
home. Her mother received in; a
black dregs With pink .,ancc black
accessories and the .bridegroom's
mother ahose a navy ensemble
with white accessories, fink car-
nations formed their coreages. The

A fire was discovered in a tree
on Bari Van Egmond's property at
late hour on Sunday night. A
passing motorist turned in the
alarm and the blaze was put out.
If the lire had not been seen, it
might have caused considerable
loss of property and possibly lives,
as everything is in such a parched
condition, and the water supply is
not adequate to control a fire,
