meet every other Sunday evening.

The Goforth Mission Band held ae
meeting in First Presbyterian.
Church on Monday afternoon. The
meeting opened with the singing
re' the first verse of. Hymn 796, The
Scripture reading was taken by
Mary Copland, followed by a piano
solo by Karen Kidd. The offering
taken ,amounted t, seventy-two
cents. The business was taken by
the president, Mrs. E. A. McMas-
ter, and Mrs. R. McFadden read a
story. The meeting closed with the
singiug of "Now the Day •is Over,"
followed by a prayer by Mrs. Mc-
Master.

Northside W. M. S. Meets.—The
W.M.S. meeting for October was
held in the church and opened with
Hymn 400, followed by prayer by
Miss Lawrence, who presided for
Mrs. Lawson, who was not present.
Reports of last meeting were giv-
en by the secretary, Mrs. Porteous.
The treasurer's report was given
by Miss Ferguson, followed bY
Hymn 28. and a reading by Mrs. J.
Finlayson. Several calls were made
to sick and shut-ins. The worship
part of the meeting was taken by
Group 2. with Nils. Cathie as
leader, the topic being on "China."
The collection was taken by Mrs.
W. Webster and Hymn 16 was
sung. The meeting closed with
prayer by Miss Lawrence.

Alert Mission Band Meets.—The
regular meeting of the Alert Mis-
sion Band of Northside United
Church was held on Tuesday. The
opening hymn, "Jesus Loves Me,"
was followed by prayer by Beth
Johns, Larine Henderson and Bet-
ty Lou Goudie, after which the
Lord's Prayer was repeated in uni-
son. Mrs. Barber led: the respon-
sive scripture lesson. The min-
utes were read and adopted and
the roll call was answered by 26
members and two visitors, Fol-
lowing the business part of the
meeting, "Jesus Laves the Little
Children," was sung. Mrs. B. F.
Christie told an interesting story,
and the meeting closed with a
hymn and the benediction. The
Alert Mission Band plans to hold
its annual tea and home-made bak-
ing sale on Saturday, Nov. N. •

Death of William Horton.—While
sitting in a friendrs car in Rocky -
ford, Mr. W. B. Horton, aged 57,
of Tudor, Alberta, died suddenly
Thursday morning. Mr: Horton
came to Canada as an infant from
North Dakota, where he was born.
After living in Manitoba for some
years he went to Strathmore in
1910. Mr. Horton was a grain buy-
er for the United Grain Growers
at Tudor for 19 years, farmed at
Standard for 10 years and had liv-
ed in that district ever since. He
was a member of the Masonic
Lodge at Strathmore and of Al
Azhar Temple, Calgary. He is sur-
vived by his widow, the former
Mary Sproat, of Seaforth, and a
daughter, .Shirley, of Tudor; and a
sister- Mrs, Paul Busmann, of
Rockyford.

Death of William M. Reid.—
There passed away in Scott Mem-
orial Hospital on Sunday morning,
Nov. 7, William Montgomery Reid,
well-known resident of this town,
in his 79th year. Mr. Reid suffer-
ed a heart attack two weeks ago,
when he was taken to the hospi-
tal. Born in Kilburnie, Ayrshire.
Scotland, he came to this country
in 1871, settling first at Egmond-
ville. Following a few years spent
in North Dakota, he returned to
Seaforth, where he has since re
sided. He was a furniture finisher
by trade, which he learned in the
Broadfoot & Box factory. For many
years he was employed in the Can-
aria Furniture Co.. and during re-
cent years by John Boshart & Sons:
Mr. Reid was a member of the
Seaforth Fire Brigade for many
years and •was a former chief. He
was a faithful member of First
Presbyterian Church. In 1894 he
was married' to Miss Charlotte
Powell, who predeceased him in
1942. Surviving are three sons:
James, of ,Goderich; Robert, of
Hamilton, and Allen, of Seaforth,
and one daughter Mrs. 'Shaky, of
Toronto. There are four grandchil-
dren. The funeral was held on
Tuesday from the G. A. Whitney
Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m., with
Rev. D. Glenn Campbell officiat-
ing. Interment was in ,Maitland -
bank cemetery. The pallbearers
were W. J. Duncan„ Enos Boshart,
Lois Boshart, John P. Bell, J.
Broome and John McKenzie.

Death of B. R. McNaught., --A

of the Manitoba Pharmaceutical
Association, B. R. McNaught, of 8
Blackstone Apartments, Winnipeg,
died Friday, Oct. 15, in the Winni-
peg General Hospital. He was 73
years of age. A native of Seaforth,
he came west with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. David McNaught in
1880, settling at Raped City, Man.
Mr. McNaught was a graduate in
pharmacy at th,e University of
Manitoba in 1901, and operated a'
drug store at Hamiota, Man., until
his retirement in 1940,.when he
moved to Winnipeg. Active in civic'
and fraternal affairs, Mr. Me-
Naught had served as mayor of
Hamiota and on the board'of true
tees of the United Church there
for many years, Besides his ns-

The Highway Department, under
the supervision of Percy Hewitt,
of Exeter, it at present widening
No. 4 Highway from Kippen south,
The shoulders on each side of the
new road are being widened and
rounded, and also the approaches
on each side of the new bridge that
was completed last fall are also
being widened. When completed,
the stretch of highway will be one
of the best in this section.
The ladies of the United Church,
Kippen, propose holding a bazaar
in the Sunday schoolrooms and the
newly decorated basement on Sat
urday, when the usual home-made
baking, fruits, vegetables and fancy
work will be offered for sale. Tea
will also be' served.
Mr. Jack Pierit, who has been
acting in the capacity of herdsman
at Jarrott Bros.' farm for the past
year, 'has resigned and left, Wed-
nesday of this week for his home
in Tillsonburg.
Mr. Jas. White, of- Stratford, a
graduate of Guelph Agricultural.
College, and who is a qualified
herdsman, has accepted a position
at Jarrott Bros.' farm, and took
over the dairy herd on Monday of
this week.
Mrs. Earl Sproat is officiating as
organist and choir leader of St. An-
drew's Church. during the absence
of Miss Ivison, who is recuperating
from her recent operation.
Mr, Dan Watson, of Centralia
Airport, visited friends in Kippen
on Sunday last.
Mr. and Mrs. Archie Parsons left
on Thursday last to visit friends
in the Western Provinces. They
expect to return during the first
week of December.
• Mr. Ken McKenzie, of 'Seaforth,.
moved last week to the farm he
recently purchased from his bro-
ther, William, on the 2nd conces-
sion of Stanley.
Mr. and Mrs, Thomas Butt ex-
pect to leave on Saturday next on
an extended trip to Arizona.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Workman
and family, of Oshawa, visited ov-
er Sunday with Mrs. Thos. Work-

Sgt. Brill -Edwards, who has oc-
cupied one of the Jarrott apart-
ments near the C.N.R. station, is
preparing to move with his wife
and family to Clinton.
