Comp fetes Modernization Program Two Large Stores Provide Facilities For Buying Public Equal To Any in Western Ontario. Completion this fali of a modern- ization :program, including the in- stallation of complete new fronts to the two large stores of Stewart Eros., marks the continuance of a trend that was established when the firm first opened for business in ,Seaforth. At that time, nearly fifty years ago, the firm resolved. that the most modern facilities available would be provided for the convenience of the Seaforth and district buying public. Through the years as new and better ar- rangements became available, they were adopted and incorporated- in- to their stores. As presently designed, the two stores include appointments seen in but few stores in much larger centres than Seaforth. This,cou- pled with the complete stock of quality merchandise which the firm features, results in Stewart Bros. being acknowledged as superior to any similar store in a town of similar size in Ontario. The modern fronts of the stores are finished in vitro glass, • in pleasing shades of rem.brandt blue and grey, -while the display, windows with their. large expanse of glass, lend themselves to the proper dis- play of merchandise. The interiors of the stores, with their new modern furnishings, are the last word in store design. The JOHN B. STETSON CO. Last week a Newfoundland. delegation• met with the government of Can- ada to complete final negotiations. 'there is interest too in the Gallup Poll which shows 64 per cent of Canadians favoring the union. The poll showed 'Canadians fav- oring the union for two reasons: (a) the possibilities of increased trade and (b) the improvement of our defence position. Trade Chances Many here feel that it would be easy to overstate the increased trade possibilities. Newfoundland industries are not highly develop- ed and it depends largely on the export of fish, newsprint and un- processed iron ore. As the other provinces of Canada are also ex- porters of the first two, interest would centre largely on the devel- opment of iron mining and the manufacture of steel. Newfound- land would give Canadian farmers an added market as it imports most of its foodstuffs, The Crop- land of Canada's new provinbe is very small—only one-fifth as 'large as Canada's smallest province— Prince Edward Island. Canadian capital is eagerly looking for new possibilities of development, par- ticularly in manufacturing and transport. The Communists The dispute in the Communist dominated. B.C. division of the In- ternational Woodworkers of Amer- ica has focussed attention again on Communist activities in Canada. Too many Canadians are prone to view lightly the dangers of Com- munism here. Apparently one hundred thousand dollars of union funds ,is not accounted for and it is charged that this was spent by the Labor•ProgressiVe (Commun- ist) leader in B.C. All across Canada the campaign sof the Communists — under the 'guise of the Labor Progressive political party and under other navies and in other ways—seeks to confuse the people of Canada on every, question related. to the de- fence of our country. With almost unbelievable hypocracy they speak the language of the pacifists In op- posing preparations for military defence. They try in every way to discredit the European recovery pian because a starving Europe would assist Communism there, They seek to create suspicion be- tween Canadians and our good neighbors to the south. Perhaps rightly, many believe that their campaign will have lit- tle effect on Canadians of Anglo- Saxon or French descent. What we might forget is that over one- (puarter of our Canadians are of continental European origin. Many of them do 'not read our English and French newspapers and hear Only the Communist propaganda which fills a great deal of the newspapers put out in other languages, The Remedy While there is an increasing awareness of the Communist at- tempts to undermine the moral of Canadians, there is no general agrobtnent on how to combat them. it would appear that only a small Minority of observers here believe that this could be accomplished by o'ntla*ing the party. It thrives When underground. Good News From Europe "Despite all appearances to the contrary, I feel much happier about, things than when ,I arrived here," the Canadian Prime Minis- ter told the Canadiaan Press. OCTOBER EVENING• Autumn leaf 'and sunset ray Seem alike to me to stay: "Never need be glory gone Till the crown of life be won." Pure Food Rigid legislation )backed up by a widespread inspection service helps keep Canada's food and rug supply safe and unadulterated. Cit- izens can do their part in protect- ing themselves by reporting to health authorities all instances of impure or adulterated food or drugs.
