This is what we'ytelbeee vfaiting
for: Initiation! Ye¢, for' the• first
time in many years the Grade
Niners were -officially welcomed to
S.H.S. The . "welcoming" took
place last. Friday night at the par-
ty given to the Blue Team by the
Red Team, the losers, on field • day.
I doubt if any grouli was ever more
thoroughly welcomed.
First, they. werelined. up and
'sasked" to say a few words to the
audience, individually. Then they
were ordered to remove their shoes,
and socks and were marched out-
side the .auditorium. After being
blindfolded, they were led in (like
lambs to the slaughter). That was
when the fun began. The victims
were: marched up a .narrow plank,
only rising a few inches off the
floor, but being made' to think they
were several feet up. Then they
were made to jump into a pan of
muddy water. After this, they were
"allowed" to handle a large gristly
bone, peeled grapes. (Everyone
knows what they 'feel like), and
cold mush. Then they were mas-
saged with a wet chamois skin,
whacked on the nether region with
a rubber hose, and had the number
"9" lipsticked on their foreheads.
All the way through, of course,
they were subjected to additional
"tortures," too numerous to men-
tion, •but you get the idea.
All in all, it was a good party,
in spite of the fact that it was
planned so hurriedly. Besidesthe
initiation, there were many novel-
ty dances and games. Cokes, sand-
wiches and cookies were served by
some members of the Red Team,
and a few especially hungry mem-
bers of the Blue Team. --
One rather odd thing about the
initiation: The teachers seemed,
to be enjoying themselves more
than the pupils—the Grade Niners
especially, of course. That just
about proves •a common idea that
teachers are mostly "Jekyll and
Hyde" characters!
