Death of Miss Mary Jane Brine.
=Death came at about 7 o'clock
Wednesday morning, September 1•
to one of the oldest, most widely
known and loved residents of this
district, when Miss Mary Jane
Brine passed away at ber home,
Goderich St. West. Miss Brine was
the daughter of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph P. Brine, one of the
first families to settle in Harpur-
hey, where she was born 91 years
ago. Her illness extended over a
Period of three months„ but prev-
ious to that she had been remark-
ably active, and had always taken
an active interest in local and
world affairs. Although quiet and
unassuming in manner, she pos-
sessed an earnest sincerity of char-
acter which combined with true
bospitality and thoughtfulness,
made and retained for her a host
of friends in town and country,
who will long cherish her mem-
ory and who will extend the sin-
cerest sympathy to her sister with
whom she made her home for so
many years, and. who is left to
mourn her passing. Miss Brine
was the oldest member of First
Presbyterian Church, and as long
as health permitted was a regular
attendant at the services and took
an active interest in all church ac-
tivities. She is survived by her
sister, Miss Frances Brine„ who
was her constant companion. A
private funeral will be held from
her late residence on• Friday, Sept.
3, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in
the family plot in Harpurhey ceme-
tery,

Parkdale Poultry
Plant, Mitchell, is
Gutted By Fire
Fire, believed to have originated
in a pile of empty baskets on the
main Boor of the Parkdale Peultry
building, on Main St., Mitchell, de-
vastated the entire interior early
Wednesday morning.
The fire siren sounded around
5:20 when Emmerson ,Gloor, baker
at Hurn's, sent in an alarm, after
being advised by Mrs. Kate ,Orabbe
that she smelt smoke in her apart-
ment located over W. H. Hoeich's
lunch room next door to the poul-
try plant. By the time the firemen
reached the scene, and it was only
a matter of minutes for the fire
hall is located directly across the
Main Street, a mass of flames was
pouring from the rear windows up-
stairs. Apparently the fire, making
no headway through' downstairs
partitions, had gone through the
ceiling and spread.
Several methods of access were
attempted by the firemen but the
place is so partitioned that they
met obstruction -"wherever they
went. Doors had to be smashed
and also two refrigerators where
fire had broken out between them
and the :floor. The- back end of
the upper storey caved in and the
entire building was gutted with
water.
A dog was taken to safety by
the fire chief, W. Bennett. The
owner, D. Tusher, or any of his
employees were around town, and
it is reported they are on holidays.
Others say they had gone to De-
troit on business. There is a liv-
ing apartment in the upper storey.
Eleven hundred feet of hose were
utilized with three streams'°'play-
ing on the flames. Firemen were
lent invaluable aid by citizens who
rushed to th.e scene. Mrs. Crabbe's
apartment was damaged by smoke
and water came down the chimney
through the Hoflick store, other-
wise the fire was kept from doing
damage there.
C. Cheoros generously' supplied
coffee to the firefighters whp were
still on duty at 10:30 a.m., watch-
ing that no further outbreak oc-
curred. It is not known whether
insurance covered the building or
not.
