Through the Nose
That delicate organ, the nose, of-
ten doesn't receive the respect which
is its due. Medical authorities point
out that the nose is an ideal point of
entry for small infections, which can
develop into more serious trubles. It
should, therefore, be protected against
germs of disease.
The ordinary rules of personal hy-
giene, including the use of clean hand-
kerchiefs or sanitary tissues, will, if
observed, permit the nose to perform
•
its important functions properly, and
save us from trouble.

Cool Comfort
As summer draws near Canadians
aagin face the need of guarding
against heat sickness. When a per-
son is exposed to very high tempera-
tures such as are found in some in-
dustries and fails.jto take the neces-
sary precautions, he may experience
dizziness, headache, cramps and nau-
sea. These are the first signs of im-
pending heat sickness and indicate
that the regulatory mechanisms for
controlling the body temperature are
unable to cope with the situation. Im-
mediate action should be taken to re-
move the patient to a cool, airy place
and to summon a doctor.
Strained Ligaments in Fall
Mrs. George, Currie, East Wawan-
osh, had a nasty fall on Sunday,
when she suffered a bruised knee and
strained the ligaments in her ankle.—
Wingham Advance -Times.
The Scott Memorial Hospital is
having its annual Hospital Day Wed-
nesday, June 30. It is desired that
the citizens of Seaforth will look up-
on their hospital as truly belonging
to them. It is true there are certain
grants given to the hospital and it is
important, if it is, to operate effici-
ently, to be run in a businesslike
fashion, but even more important, is
to have the deep interest of the peo-
ple.
It is the earnest desire of the hos-
pital to give the best of medical and
nursing service, and it is their wish
that the people should look upon the
hospital as their home when they are
ill. In the past, hospitals have
changed as conditions -have changed.
In the future they will continue to
change to meet the additional de-
mands of their communities.
Hospital Day commemorates the
birth of Florence Nightingale, who
founded the Nightingale School for
Nursing at St. Thomas' Hospital,
London. From this school was gradu-
ated in 1863 a band of fifteen nurses
who later became the pioneer heads
of training schools throughout the
world.
The first hospital in Canada was
the Hotel Dieu .61u Precieux Sang, es-
tablished in Quebec in 1639. A few
years later, in 1644. Jeanne Mance
built a hospital of axe -hewn logs at
the foot of Mount Royal on the Island
of Montreal. in a little colony then
known as V i•Ilemarie, now the City
of Montreal. Jeanne Mance founded
the Order of the Sisters of St, Jos-
eph, the. first nursing group organ-
ized in America. The Mack Training
School, St. Catharines, founded in
1873, by. Dr. Mack, was the first train-
ing school for nurses in Canada.—
