April 5. Now4I know why it' Calle
Blue Monday. ` As for . the bad new
reports, things were blue all week
SUS. Either the atmosphere wa
depressing, or 'blue; or the air wa
figuratively speaking, blue from su
dry comments made when the stud
ents got the reports. Oh well, let'
leave all that 'behind us -till the ne
time -and think about the level
spring weather we're having. Th
whole school is thoroughly enjoyin
a king-size case of spring fever,. a
we gaze, sleepy-eyed, ' through th
windows and desperately wish w
were outside enjoying ourselves.
But enough of that. Now we'll d
a quick change from the sublime t
the ridiculous, which takes the form
of an unexpected bath which a Pitt
Former took last week when the
wild, turbulent river (?) Silver Creek
was on the rampage. That, friend, i
a joke. Anyway, last Friday after
noon the basement at S.H.S.-was well
awash, with about a foot of the brin
deep in various places. Of course
it put out the fire, but as luck is'al
most always against the students a
S.I.S. collectively, it was not cold
enough to warrant closing school an
it was a Friday afternoon anyway, so
... no go. However -watch carefully
now, the funny part will be along
shortly -there is a large board at the
foot of the steps on the girls' side o
the basement, which covers a large
drain. As a matter of fact, the
thing's about four feet deep and a
couple of feet wide. The aforemen
tioned board had floated away with
the tide -the water backing up the
drain -and a Fifth Form girl chose
that moment to come dashing down
stairs, not noticing the absence of the
board, and the water, which was up
to the first step. Of course, she step-
ped right in, up to her shoulders
This may be Leap Year, but the girls
still should look before they leap, es-
pecially when a drain is concerned.
I'm willing to wager that the "Drip"
is still trying to find out who tried
to get rid of her by almost `running
her down a sewer!

, here's an idea which seems to have
d. a. fair amount of suppert.among the
s, student body. Instead of each Form
at trying- to put on a literary meeting
s (there hasn't been, a real literary one
s, yet), how about each Form putting
n- on a dance, perhaps once a month,
taking' turns? The dance would be
s students only, a nominal admission
xt •could be charged, and the students of
y each Form in turn would look after
e admission, lunch (which need not be
g elaborate), and music by our record
s player. The dances would be much
e more enjoyed by the etetdents than
e the so-called literary meetings, and
would serve another .purpose: the
o 'teen-age student element:: of Seaforth
q needs a good place to go for recrea-
tion on non -school nights, and as long
h as the. mythical n mortal'community
t centre hangs fire and remains a mere
, subject for idle conversation, the
s school has to serve. In the past there
- has not been any such pierce in Sea -
forth, and there is no need of an it -
y emized statement telling where and
, how youth spends its spare time in
- this town. Youth leaders elsewhere,
t and even our ' own. respected town
fathers bemoan.the situation, and
and
what has been done? Some money
has been collected; some promises
have been made, and there has been
a grand and glorious wealth of pro-
crastination! "Building costs are too
f high," they say. Who ever said any-
thing had to be built? Halls can be
rented, can't they? 'Teen Towns else-
where are run on the members' dues
- and halls are rented; why not here?
There should be no dearth of back-
ing organizations; don't the members,
of the Lions Club, the Legion, yes,
- even the Athletic Association have
sons and daughters of high school
age? Don't they ever castigate young
Johnny for being seen in the pool
, room, or scold young Mary for being
seen in questionable company at the
dance hall? If they're responsible
parents, they do, and then complain
about there being "no decent place
for them to go!" Well, MAKE ONE!
The country's youth is its greatest
resource -protect it!
Early this week Mayor M. A. Reid
received a letter addressed simply to
"The Mayor, Seaforth, Canada." It
was from an elderly German school
teacher, who, at 81, has recommenced
teaching to support a large family of
elderly dependents living in the. Rus-
sian -occupied zone of Germany. As
requested in the letter, it was turn-
ed over to the Principal of the High
School, E. L. Fox. The letter was a
plea for assistance from the students
of S.H.S. for the elderly teacher, who,
according to the letter, was never a
•member of the Nazi party, and is now
teaching religidli.in an ellementary
school.
The students voted to aid the teach-
er (I know that sounds odd, but s'help
me, that's what happened), and the
supplies were collected Thursday in a
special assembly. Response was
good, and the parcel will be sent to
'Germany shortly.
Well, last week a had our 'pitchers
tooken!' Yep, again. This time a
London firm called on us and
took our individual pictures, with the
option of keeping any, or none. After-
wards, there was a good deal of trad-
ing, peeking and snatching, but many
students, when they saw what their
mugs actually were like in black and
white, • just shuddered and returned
them, but fast. "The camera doesn't
He," but still "the truth hurts."
Coming Events Dept.: This is one
event that's been coming ever since
late last fall. That is the much talk-
ed about Fourth Form literary. meet-
ing. A date has. been definitely set
for it several times as the, months
roll by, but it still hasn't put in an

IN THE REALM OF SPORTS
Well done, Seaforth Bosharts . .
you were worthy representatives and
all hockey fans should be proudof
you! Although you lost two straight
games to Milverton, you' gave them
real opposition. On the play, we feel
that perhaps the better team won, de-
spite your tough luck around the Mil-
verton cage. There are `no excuses
no alibis. Town Whisperings
extends congratulations to a fighting
team and to all the hockey supporters
and merchants who made the hockey
broadcast possible. We believe Goalie
McNabb deserves an extra hearty
handshake for the splendid way he
held the Milverton snipers the
score sheet. The boys can now hang
up their skates for another year and
start to think about the coming soft-
ball season. It is hoped the Lions
Park will be floodlighted in time for
the summer months and local fans
will be able to see night games.
By all accounts appearing in the
papers, the community centre idea is
getting very general. New Hamburg
Council has granted land already for
its new centre afid has set'their ob-
jective at $75,000. Coming closer to
home, we find the small centre of
Hensall has already set out for $20, -

the benefit of Hensall and district and
will include many fine features, such
as a regulation ice surface, rooms for

we can safely see that Hensall and

Seaforth going to accomplish this
