Death,,The Wilkie Press, of Wilkie,
Sask., in a recent issue, comments on
the passing 'of the late Den Hughes,
who was buried in St: Columban cetn-
etery two 'weeks ago after a service
in St. James' Chuech, -Setiforth: -The
•death of Daniel Plughes in Si. Paul's
Hospital at, Saskatoon on Thursday,
July 31, removed front this town tali
district' a citizen who was knovala and
respected by a large number of
friends . -and 'acquaintances. Mr, Hughes
heti been in HI hearth during the past
two months and had been a patient
in the- local hospitarbeforeebeingsre-
moved to Saskatoon -over •a, eveek ago:
Anxious friends had watched his con-
dition, and improvement noted some
weeks 'a.go, but a relapse set in and
he passed away at 11 p.m. on July 31.
Funeral' service for the late Mr,
Hughes 'aves held in the St. John the
Baptist Roman Catholic .Church in
Wilkie'. on Monday ,morning, --attend-
ed by a large gathering of friends and
relatives. Rev. Father Schaller was
the officiating .pniest and conducted
Requiem' High Maes, with a choir
fromSt. Thomas' College. Battleford,
leading in the choral service, Messrs.
W. J. Bleue, W. J. Clements, J. R.
MacDOnald, of Wilkie; Joe Kingston,
Winnipeg; Tim Ryan, Scott, and Tom
Ryan, North Battleford, acted as. pall-
bearers. Rids Funeral Home, Wil-
kie, had charge of arrangements,
with J. E. Goodfellow assisting. The
remains were conveyed by train to
Ontario, where burial will be made in
the family plot at St. Columban, Ont.
The late "Dan" Hughes -was born in
McKillop Township, Huron County,
on February.- 19,. 1866, and followed
the business orfarming .in Ontario for
forty years before corning West to
Battleford in 1905. In 1908 Mr.
Hughes came to Wilkie and conduct-
ed the Empire Hotel . for two years
in partnership with Ryan and McAl-
lister. In 1910 he moved to Kerrobert
and there' with Tom Ryan as partner
erected the -Windsor Hotel in that
town, which he conducted until 1919.
Coming back, to Wilkie 'he purchased
large tracts of 'land adjoining • the.
townsite of Wilkie and has success-
fully conducted farming operations
--since that time. He also was owner
of the Club Pool Building .in. Wilkie,
which he recently disposed to P.. M.
Florence & Sons. Mr. Hughes was
the last survivor of a family °fate's.
Five nephews and eight nieces re-
main, all residing in Eastern Canada,
excepting J. Roach, of Wilkie. Rich-
ard L. Roach, a nephew from Toron-
to, With his wife and son, attended
the funeral in Wilkie. Friends from e
wide' area were also in 'attendance at
the funeral service. The name of
Dan Hughes was esynonymous with
all that was kindly and cheerful. •in
Wilkie district. He was the friend of
many and was' never found wanting
in any time of need. His' genial dis-
position, and friendly ways endeared
him to all."

lovely gifts There were about ninety
guests present, andi a delicious lunch

blood poisoning in his hand, and is in
a critical condition, Charles Stephen,
who also sufferell with blood poison
in his arm, hat recovered by the use
of the penicillim drug.

a few weeks at their cottage at the
lake.

Tender Call for Tile Drainage Work
• The Township of Usborne, Huron County, will receive Tenders
up to the hour of 9 pm., THURSDAY; SEPTEMBER 4, 1947, for the
contract to dig, lay, and ,backfill the tiled portions ‘of the Cann -Mitchell
and Wilma .MuniCipal Drains, in- the Township of Usborne. The work
calls for the installation of 11,720 feet of tile ,drain, including 480 feet
tif sixteen -inch tile and 1,900 feet of fourteen:lfich tile.. Township will
supply all the tile.
Plans, specifications and -Engineer's estiniates may be seen at the
. office of the undersigned. Tenders mustbe accompanied by certified
