cAuse AND EFFECT
163
Two sliaps which show "cause ant. effect" make go9d story:tellin• g
pictures.
WE'VE all heard a lot about plc-
!' ture series—about telling the
story of a picnic, or a day at the
beach, in four or five snapshots.
But, have you ever thought, you
could tell a picture story with just
two snaps? It's easy. Here' d the an-
swer. 'Show cause and effect!
For instance, glance at our illus-
trations this week. Here's Junior
investigating a. beautiful wooden
'box on the shelf of hia-babYlliair
—that's "cause." And then lookat
him grin at , that jumping jaclt--
there's "effect?' You can jolly well
bet that these snaps are the pride
and joy of Junior's folleseand 'unless
I'm sadly mistaken any ,,parents
would really prize similar pictures
of their baby.
But you don't need a, baby, and
you 'don't need a jumping jack to
make "cause and effect:' work for
you in your snapshooting You can
apply this technique to any age
group or aspect of :life just as long
as you make it center around an
interesting situation.
For example, snap ...a kitten and
a ball of yarn together, and, you'„ve
got "cause." • Snap the kitten when
it's all tangled up in the yarn, and
you've got the "effect." Catch a
little 'girl gazing at mother's cos
inetics ori the dressing table for an
-
Other shot. And then picture her
with lipstick and powder smeared',
all over her face, and you've got
the follow-up, ' '
So you see' story -telling picture ,
sefs aren't always a great mass of
pictures—two shots are ften suit
cient. It's just a matter of imagina-
tion and developiaga _good picture
situation So put your "thinking cap"
on right now, and see what picture
situations you can figure out. You'll
find "cause and effect" picture taking
is lots .more fun thau just niakixig
single snapshots,

Has Reached Peak
The peak ,preductiOn of butter for
Ontario for the year 1946 appears to
have been reached during the third
week In June, aceording to a summary
of creamery instructPre' reports is-
sued by C. E. Lackner, Director of
tbe Ontario Dairy Branch. While some
sections had their peak a week earl-
ier, the hot weather of the last week
of the month had the effect of cur-
tailing the peak season. Despite ex-
cellent, pasture and production cqndi-.
tions• generally, says Mr. Lackner, the
peak did not quite reach • the levels
of that of a year ago, althougl. quite
a number of plants Ieport production
for This time of year equal to that of
last yeat.
When it became evident that June
production was not Oing, to exceed
that of last :year, the butter market
firmed considerably, rising a full cent
a pound between the first and the last,
of -the month. -Because of the diFi-
cuLty, in obtaining supplies last win-
ter, it appears that many plants are
endeavouring to guard against a re-
petition and are storing all their 43uh-
plus. Supplies reaching the larger
centres were smaller and just suf-
ficient to take care of current needs.
While cream prices were dropped
during the first part of the month,
the rise in butter prices was reflect-
ed in a' rise in cream prices towards
the end of June, partleulariy in West-
ern Ontario.•
The butter quality competitions this
Year. ate more keenly contested than
ever, alth a large percentage of the
competitors having little or no un-
dergrade butterto date. Based on
grading returns, Ontario is producing
the' highest quality of butter in years;
and is a full ten per cen,t. better. than
last year.
