Recommends DDT .To, Potato Growers•
• In experimental work anq in act`c'tar
field practice, DDT lias proved so
effective . .against iihsects • attacking
potatoes that growers are advised to
use this insecticide- in preference to
any other in treating their potato
crop' during 1946,, says• Alan G'. Dim;
•tan, ,Divisio'n rif. Entomology, Domin-
ion Department 'of Agriculture.
DDT has given excellent control of
.the Colorado potato beetle, the pota-
to flea beetle, and. the potato leafhop-
per. In spray' form particularly, it is
also effective against potato. aphids:
As a spray DDT can be combined
with. Bordeaux•..,,mixture, with 'airy of.
the fixed coppers 'or with the newer,
organic fungicides. It is used- at the.
rate of one 'pound of actual DDT trio'
each 100 gallons of liquid.
As 'a dust DDT .is used. in three per
cent strength, combined with some
suitable filler and fixed coppers.' Mr.
Dustan emphasizes that' DDT cannot
be• used in the old copper-lime.,dust
as the lime in this combination
sharply reduces the toxicity of,,the
poison. •
DDT will be readily available on
the market this, spring. It will be
G old in: dust form, with and without
fixed, copper, completely 'mixed and.
ready to use. It' will come 'also in
the form of -a •spray, ''either` asoma
spray., powder or as an .emulsifiable
liquid. In either case the percentage
o f the insecticide will be indicated on -
the container. In spraying potatoes.
the DDT should. .be .mixed with a
fungicide to control blight. Sufficient
-of 'the concentrate should be used to
give one pound of DDT in each 100

Urge Use •Certified 'Seed Potatoes
Although there is a good supply of
certified seed • potatoes in the Mari-
time Provinces at ,the •present mom-
ent, potato growers in Canadaare urg-
ed to, order without' delay their certi-
fied seed for 1946 planting. The de-
mand is increasing quickly.,Also
there is. still a critical 'need fr the
-maximum. production -of 'food and it
is within the...porer .of potato grow
..ers, by growing the greatest amount
they. possibly ,can, to assist in the
release of food to• the starving pea
pies of the world. ,
The best. yield of potatoes.and those
of the highest food value can be
grown by using certified seed,- other-
wise there is no guarantee that. the
potatoes' planted are free from dis-
ease. There are three classes of cert-
ified seed potatoes, namely: Certified,
Foundation A, and Foundation. Certi-
fied seed producers, by the way, must
plant Foundation 'or Foundation A 'to
enable them to have their elds in-
spected. In addition to the three

Next to heart disease, cancer
is the greatas.t..single cause of
death on this continent. It
kills 1,000 Canadians every ,
month.,, One out of every eight'`"
-persons now living' must expect to
die ofcancer, unless far-reaching preventive
Measures are taken.
•Cancer is a deadly killer unless the patient
seeks early medical advice. . But when
caught in its early Stages, cancer IS -generally
curable: •
The cause of cancer is 'still ,unknown, and,
there is yet no -Specific cure. But if diagnosed
in time and• treated by surgery, x-ray or
radium, a cure can be effected in a majority
of all cancer cases.
It is now proposed -to organize an energetic
campaign, in Ontario against cancer in all its
forms. This campaign will have the follow-
ing objectives:
0
1—To organize and operate fully
equipped cancer clinics at snit -Ale
centres, where people may be ex-
amined, and, if necessary, treated
according to, the most scientific methods.
2—To pay a portion of the cost of treatment
of cancer for those needing financial help.
3—To fay travelling expenses to andiron clinics•
if needed.
4—To conduct an energetic program of cancer
research., -
To carry out this .program, the first need is
money. Your donation will definitely help
to reduce the number' -o£ deaths from cancer in
this province. It - will help hundreds of
people -to be m'edicany examined in time and
to escape from the deadly clutches of cancer.
It may well help research scientists to dis-
cover a cure for cancer and so free mankind
forever from the dread scourge of cancer.
This appeal is for an objective of $2,000,000 to provide for et Three-year program of
•t cancer research', treatment and province -wide service.
