Meets. - The Woman's Missionary Auxiliary of Northside 'United Church was held Thursday, August 9th. Mrs. R. Law- son, the president, opened the meet- ing with Hymn 488 in the bymnary, followed by prayer in unison. Min- utes of the July meeting were read by the' secretary, Mrs. Porteous. Busi- ness discussions were taken up by the president, Mrs. R. Lawson, and a committee was appointed for the Fall thankoffering of Miss A. Lawrence and Mrs. W. A. Workman. The treas- urer's report was read by Miss A. Ferguson. Mrs. C. C. Kaine gave a temperance reading, "Beverage Rooms May Be Closed." Circle four took charge with the reading of a hymn by Mrs. R. Lawson. The topic was, "The Canadian Indians." Differ- ent readings were given by -Miss Wal- lace, Mrs: C. Barber, 'Miss A. Fergu- son, Mrs. T. J. Webster and Miss A. Somerville, foihytrred by repeating the 23rd Psalm in unison. The collec- tion was taken up by Mrs. G. St. Mary's, Dublin. - 9.30 a.m., Thanksgiving For Victory and Peace. =The Rector, Rev. C. F. L. Gilbert, B.A., at both services. Died in Ottawa. -Word was receiv- 'ed on Thursday morning by Mr. J. M. Goyenlock, of the death in Ot- tawa of Miss Clarissa Scott, daugh- ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arch Scott, of Seaforth. Miss Scott had been in failing health for the past year. She was born in Seaforth and spent her early life here, but for a number.of years had been in the Civ- il Service in Ottawa. She is surviv- ed by one brother, Mr. C. M. Scott, of Edmonton. The remains will be brought to Seaforth for interment in the family plot in Harpurhey ceme- tery, but funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. Death of John C. Laing, -The death occurred in • Scott Memorial Hospital on Saturday, August 11th, of John Cuthill Laing, in his 73rd year. On Thursday last Mr. Laing suffered an attack of eoronory thrombosis, and on Saturday 4norning'suffered a ser- ious attack from which he passed away. He had not enjoyed good health in•recent years, but his death came as a great shock to his many friends. Mr. Laing was born in ..Cromarty, a son of the late Mr, and Mrs: Thomas Laing, and was married in 1901 to- Margaret Scott, also of Cromarty, who together • 'with, one soneWilliam William T., of Wallaceburg, and one daughter, Mrs. William Aberhart, ,of London, survive. He is also sur- vived by one sister, Mrs. Neil Gilles- pie, of Seaforth, and seven grandchil- dren: Evelyn, Margaret, Helen, Wil- liam and Robert Laing and Helen and William Aberhart. tlitr. and Mrs. Laing retired from the farm in 1915 and had since resided in Seaforth. He was a member of Northside Unit- ed Church and a member of the Ses- sion since union. He also taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Bible Class. For a number of years he was a mem- ber of Scott Memorial Hospital Board and a Public School Trustee. A private funeral was held from his late home on James Street on Mon- day at 2 p.m., with Rev. A. H. John- ston, of Mitchell, .officiating. The pallbearers were Messrs. Elmer Scott, Thomas Laing, Thomas Scott, Wilmer Cuthill, John Hodgert and James Hodgert. MacTavish ar- rived home Thursday last on the Ile de France, which docked the Sunday previous. He has been overseas for two years 'and saw service in France, Germany and Holland. • Mrs. W. C. H'ackerdorn of Zurich, will be the preacher at the evening service, with special music by the Zurich quartette. Mrs. Charles Parker celebrated her eighty-sixth birthday on Monday. Her family was present and enjoyed a pleasant time together. Mrs. Parker is hearty andenjoying good health, and her many friends wish her many more happy years. Mr. Archie Hoggarth, of Wallace - burg, who is taking a cadet course at Thames Valley, near London, spent the week -end with his wife at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Britton. HAY Council Meeting The council of the Township of Hay met in the Township Fall on Tues- day, August 7th, at 8.30 p.m. The following communications were read: Stanley Township's reply, re Logan Drain, Navy League. The following motions were then passed; That the Clerk be authorized to write to the Township of Usborne to ascertain whether the persons assessed to- wards the Wildfong Drain would be willing to pay their portion towards a cleanout in Hay without the need of getting out a new report. That by- law to levy and collect annually a special rate for the Federation of Agriculture for County of Huron be read a third time. That the Clerk be authorized to write to the Attorn- ey -General's Department to ask for advice in the St. Joseph property question. ,That at the request of the Board of Trustees of ,Zurich and Dashwood police villages the rates be set at 10 and 11.5 mills respectively, on all rateable property in the said villages for 1945. That -the budget for the year 1945 be adopted and that the rates be confirmed by bylaw. That approval be given to the request of the petitioners on the Brenner Drain to have teh-inch tile put in the Bren- ner Drain instead of eight -inch as in bylaw. That accounts for township roads, relief, Hay Township and Hay Municipal Telephone System be paid as per voucher.
