' It was not long in coming and its accuracy Was, deadly. It bi'olce up the enemy infantry attack immediately and before long 'it 'was chasing the tanks around the 'field. A lucky shot by the Germans kill- ed the -Canadian artillery representa- tive almost at.the start of the en- counter but Platoon Commander.- Lieut. ommanderLieut. Gilmour used to be an artillery- man himself and he directed the fire personally until the arrival of Major R. Archibald, of Prince Arthur Ave., Toronto. So accurate was the fire that••eheljs were dropped on points within .fifty yardsof CPI. Atchison's farm house without mishap. At the house today the corporal showed • me how close the tanks” had come to him.., . "Right at that line of trees," he said; 'and pointed across a single field. As a' matter of fact, Glengarry infan- try was stalking warily through' the trees ' at the 'time and -the corporal ex hied a patrol had just been sent off• to winkle Gerrniiii out of their trenches. All day yesterday and to- day they have •been appearing, leav- ing their trenches with guts held oy- er' their heads and crying in English; "good• comrades come to surrender." "It's a lot different now from the other night," the corporal said. It was the noise. of. the tanks that gave away their positions last night and enabled Lieut. Gilmour and i\ ajor Archibald'to pinpoint therm. The sec- tion in the farm house would hear the tank engines roaring like mad for a minute, then.. ,they would be silent while the shells fell. ' In the end, the 'tanks all got away to the westward in the direction of 'Emmerich, but what looked like •a dangerous counter-attack had been ef- fectively broken up. "After we heard them go out of 'earshot ,we ,reduced 'air hundred per cent stand to fifty per cent," the new colonel o4 the Glengarrians 'told me.
