William Herbert Speare.—It is with
deep regret and a very keen sense of
loss that we record the passing of
William Herbert ("Bert') Speare on
June 8, 1944. Porn. at Seaforth, Ont.,
Ben started as night operator in
1905, and three years later he was
transferred to Wingham as operator.
In 1912 he was appointed switchboard
man in London. Ont., where he re-
mained for nine years.- Transferring
to'• Montreal -as equipment -inspector
on the staff of "the late A. L. Dyke,
•he travelled extensively over the com-
pany's territory. In 1926 he was ap-
pointed equipment engineer of the
central division, with headquarters nu
Toronto, and in this capacity he work-
ed within the expanding area which
became. the western• division, until
the time of his death. Mr.- Speare
will be remembered for the enterprise
and energy he brought to the por-
formance of every job. His ingenuity
in the practical field, of telephone
egnipi'hent, ranging from the earlier.
types to the latest' toll and dial sys-
tems, became characteristic of his
work. His associates will always re-
call his ready esif and a keen sense
of humour that prompted a fund of
anecdote to enliven every conference
and gathering of telephone people in
which he founds 'himself. Prominent
in the Masonic Order, he was a •mem-
ber of Toronto "Lodge of Perfection,
Rose Croix' Chapter of the Scottish
Rite,! and also St. George's -Lodge,
London, Ont. He was a member of
the Champlain Council, Telephone
Pioneers of America, and a member
of the Ontario Society of Professtonal
Engineers.—(July Blue Bell).
