Hall in honor of the newly-weds, L.-
Cpl.'
:Cpl.' and Mrs. Stewart Humphries.
,About 275 were present, At . hunch
time that bride and . groom were call-
ed to the platform and Mrs. Humph-
ries was presented with a beautiful
bouquet of roses and mixed flowers by
little Maxine Ferg, and Rev. R. G.
Hazlewood read a very well'•prepar-
ed address,' presenting the young cou-
pie • with $75.00 w,prth of war certifi-
cates. The groom then thanked all
those taking, part and extended a
hearty welcome to all to come, and
see them when the war is over and
they are established in a home of
their own.
The annual meeting of the Varna
Red Cross Society will be held in the
hall on Monday evening, Jan. llth,•
commencing at 8 o'clock. All are
welcome; come out and hear the re-
ports of the year's activities. Another
feature of interest will be the elec-
tion of officers for the ensuing year.

Venus - Tait.—On Novembe 16, 1942,

Ciaig-Millar Presbyterian Church, Ed-
inburgh, Scotland, Dorothy , Milne
Tait, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
R. M. Tait, of 6 Waverly Park 'Ter-
race, Edinburgh, Scotland, was united
in ' marriage to Pte. John Robert
Venus, of the R.C.R. Canadian Army,
second son of Mr. and Mrs. William.
R. Venus. of Goderich, and a former.
Seaforth boy. The bride was dress-
ed in a turquoise blue suit with black
accessories and wore a corsage of
pale mauve chrysanthemums. , The
bladesmaid was the bride's only sis;
ter, Miss Margie Tait. She was dress-
ed in a tan suit with brown acces-
sories and wore a corsage of yellow
chrysanthemums. The best man was
the groom's brother, Tpr. Albert Ed-
ward Venus,- of the Employment Ptl.,
4th Div. H.A. of the Canadian Army.
From the church the wedding party
proceeded to the home of the bride
where the wedding luncheon was
served, the highlight of the occasion
being the 'cutting of the' cake, and
the bestman was 'kept busy reading
the many telegrams from friends of
the ,bride as well as some from friends
of -the groom in Canada. After lunch
the bride and groom left -by train to
spend a few days honeymoon in Aber-
deen,...Scotland, .On their return the
groom returned to his unit .while the
bride will reside with her,•parents for
the duration. The Many friends of
the grodm in Seaforth and Goderich
as 'well as other points where he is
known, will -join in wishing them
both a very happy wedded' life and
the best of luck.

The Late Mrs. William Mallott
Pearl Carnochan, former Seaforth
girl, passed away in Garden City,
Michigan, on December 29th, She was
ill only a .few days with pneumonia.
She was the wife of Wiliam Mallott,
,and daughter of Mrs. Myrtle Carno-
phan, of Eloise, Mich., and the late
Robert Carnochan, and was born on
the 2nd concession of Tuckersmith rn
October, 1906. She received her edu-
cation in Seaforth Collegiate Insti-
tute. The late Mrs. Mallott leaves .to
mourn her loss her husband and two
sons, Frank -and Craig, her mother
and one brother, Gordon, who is serv-
ing in the Navy at Great Lakes, 111.
The floral wreaths were many and
beautiful. Interment was made in
Glenwood Cemetery.

fnan, of Seaforth, and Mrs. George
Johnston, of Varna, returned hbme
Monday night after attending the
funeral of their. niece, Mrs. William
Mallott. ..

verse was given in response to the
roll call. Donald O'Brien, gave
poem, "The Bible," and Ian Aldworth
sang "Silent Night." , The Mission
Band purpose was ,repeated in' uni-
son,' and Mrs. G.. W. Butson told- the
story, "The Bible. Goes To the North-
land." "Jesus. Bids Us Shine" was
sung and the Mizpa,h benediction was
pronounced.
-•Staffa Women's Institute held their
monthly meeting in the Community
Hall with a good attendance,. the
president, Miss Margaret Davis, pre-
siding. The meeting ,opened by sing-
ing "0 Canada," followed by the
Lord's Prayer. The roll call was an-
swered, by naming a nation that has
joined the Allies. The 'minutes and
treasurer's report were read by Mrs
Lorne, Hodge, also the treasurer's re
port from the Red Cross was read- by
Mrs. L.. McKellar. Miss 'Vera' Hamb
ly gave the War work report. Miss
Davis read a letter from Miss 'Marg

HULLETT
The late Mrs. William Clarke
The death occurred- in Hullett town-
ship on Saturday: of , Mrs. William -
-Clarke, a well known resident of Hul-
lett, in her 78th year. Mrs. Clarke
had been 111 for several months and
had been confined to her room for
five months. Born in McKillop in
1865, she was formerly Harriet. Eliza-
beth Coates, daughter of the late
Robert Coates •and Harriet Elizabeth
Dale. In 1884 she was married in
Blyth to. William Clarke, who prede-
ceased her about threeyears ago.
She 'was a member of the `United
Church, at Constance and .was a regu-
lar attendant, also of church meetings
and especially at Red Cross meetings
which she attended last 'winter. Sur-
viving are one son, Ephriam Clarke,
Hullett; sone daughter, Mrs. Howard
Armstrong (Evelyn), Hullett, and one
brother, .0.- F. ,Coates,' Rutherford,
New Jersey. There are seven grand-
children, and :three' great grandchil-
dren. The funeral was held Monday
at two o'clock from her late residence
in Hullett township. Rev. A. E. Men-
zies, of Londesboro Church, conduct-
ed , the service and interment waas
made in Maitlandbank cemetery. The
pallbearers were three nephews 'and
three grandsons, Messrs. George Pol-
lard, Percy Taylor, Oliver Anderson,
Lorne Lawson, Stersart Dale and
Stew art Dolmage.

has a `very fine record since its in-
auguration.

Christmas with gift's. At the Decem-
ber meeting contributions of $10 each
were voted to be fprw'arded. to the
British'Children's Christmas fund and
the Russian Relief rued. The `club
has many line records of its splendid
'work to make public at the annual
meeting to be held in. January — the
date of which will be annoiinded later
—when elections of. Officers for 1943
will take place. • The greseat officers'
are very desirous that the e$tire com-
munity be represented at this meet-
ing as one hundred per cent, co-oper-
held at St. Patrick's Church on Sun-
day afternoon. Rev. Dr. Ffoulkes em-
phasized flys particular • points: A
speedy victory for the Allied Nations;
a just and lasting peace; repose of
the souls of all deceased soldiers;
consolation for all those afflicted, and
cessation of persecutions.
