Dublin War Services: Many thanks
for 300 cigarettes recently received.
We have just returned from a three -
scheme in the middle of which the
parcel caught up with me, and et that
particular time was doubly appreci-
ated. I„also received a pound of pipe
tobacco from Steil in the same mail,
so I really went to town. It rained
almost continuously for the three
weeks we were out, and as we had
to sleep in the open, except when we
could find a nice comfortable pig pen,
it was none too pleasant. The cigar-
ettes, therefore, helped us. to forget
our discomforts. In contrast, we are
now billeted in a coastal town in a
castle evacuated by the owner. It is
a vast place surrounded by acres of
ground—mostly flower garden with
huge holes here and there where
bombs have fallen. I am writing this
in the dining room, where I also sleep
with several others. The room is as
large as an ordinary house, There
are a dozen or more bathrooms and
half a dozen kitchens. The cooks do
their stuff 'oft gas stoves. 'The elec-
tric is still on, though we scarcely
e'er have to use tlae lights, as with
two hours daylight saving, it' is sel-
dom dark before eleven o'clock. Next
week we may be out in the mud again
or looking for a straw stack into
which we can . burrow for the night.
A very diversified_ existence, but an
extremely healthy one. There has
been remarkably little sickness-. in
spite of weather conditions. I think
that in another few months we will
be strong enough to go further afield
and when that time comes I expect
it will be the beginning of the end
for Mr. Hitler. Again I. wish to thank
you for the parcels and assure you
they are very much appreciated.
Yours very truly,
CPL. J. C. JORDAN
In honor of the feast of St. Chris-
topher, the patron -saint of travellers,
Rev. Dr. Ffoulkes administered the
blessing on automobiles on Sunday.
The entire hay crop and a number
of live stock were lost early Saturday
morning when. firecompletely destroy-
ed the barn of Joseph' F. Melady, con-
cession 4, Hibbert Township. Cause
of the blaze was unknown, but it was
probably spontaneous combustion. The
barn burned quickly and efforts of
neighbors who formed a bucket bri-
gade in an attempt to save the build-
ing were of little avail. Twenty hogs
and two calves were lost in the fire.
Six hogs escaped from the burning
barn when the doors burned off, and
fit is hoped they were caved. Neigh-
bora succeeded in saving the chicken'
house Only 100 feet away from the
barn, and the 3:00 chicks it housed
were unharmed. The Naas wa.s partly
covered by litsuranee.
