Mae Lane Auxiliary Meets. -- The
regular meeting of the Mae Lane Aux-
iliary of the United Church was held
on Monday evening. Mrs. F. J, Bech-
ely opened the meeting with a hymn;
Mrs. Snell led in prayer, and Miss
Fennell conducted the business and
reports from secretaries. Interesting
Part here was the presentation of -a
si'Iver flower container to Mrs. Harry
Steinberg, Who leaves shortly for New
Hamburg. Miss, Wilma Seip made the
presentation on behalf of the Auxil-
iary. Mrs. Knight, Captain of Circle
3, took charge of the devotional part
of the meeting. Mrs. J. M. Scott read
the Scripture lesson, followed by
prayer by Mrs. B. Christie. Miss A.
Lawrence gave a most interesting
topic
on the` first st ch-apter of the new
study book. The meeting closed with
the hymn, "All the Way My Saviour
Leads Me" and the Mizpah benedic-
tion. ,
Funeral of the Late Herbert C. Box.
—The funeral of the late Herbert C.
Box was held on Friday last with Rev,
Hugh Jack officiating, Among those

M. S. of' Northside United Church
met t'or their .November meeting en
the 13th with .the president, Mrs- Law-
son, in the chair, who opened the
meeting by , the use of the hymn, "O
God pf Bethel By Whose Hand," fol -
]owed by prayer by Mrs. Porteous.
Mrs. Finlayson, Mrs. Laing and Mrs.
Glee' were appointed the nominating
committee. The treasurer, Miss Fer-
guson, gave a gratifying report and
Mrs. Archibald re -read the budget for
the last quarter, and Mrs, Keine then
gave a temperance reading, after
which the roll call was taken and
the tweeting was then- turned over to
Circle 5 under the leadership of Mrs.
Cuthift ti be theme being, "We. Live
By Faith in Jesus Christ." "O Wor-
ship the King" was then sung, fol-
lowed by a period of dedication and
meditation and Mrs. Cuthill -leading
by giving a beautiful reading, after
which two verges of "Faith Of Our

,then received', after which Miss Lawr-
ence then took up the 'topic, the sub-
ject being "Lifting the Latch." Miss
Lawrence told of hardships endured
by the pioneer missionaries and of
the work done by Dr-. Hartman and
Dr. Kilborn in China. Miss Lawrence
said the question now is, "Is the
church ready for China, and not is
China now ready for the church."
"Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" was
sung and the meeting closed with the
benediction.
Death of Norman J. Nicholls,—The
sudden death took place in Valleyfield,
Quebec, on Saturday, of Norman Jas -
ver Nicholls, in bis 59th year. Mr.
Nicholls had gone to Quebec only two
days before to work at his. trade.
Death occurred early Saturday even-
ing following a severe stroke. Born
at Atwood he was the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. William Nicholls: He
was married in 1906 to Miss Florence
Pinkney, of Seaforth, and had lived
almost his entire life here where he
was employed as a painter and finish-
er. He is survived by his wife and
one daughter (Ona), Mrs. Lionel For-
tune; one sister, Mrs. Marshall
Thomas,' London, and three brothers;
William, Lumsden, Sask.; Wardell,
Atwood, and Wesley Nicholls, Sea -
forth. A private funeral was held
on`Wednesday froth his late residence
to iMaitlandbank cemetery, The ser-
vices were conducted by Rev- Hugh
Jack, and the pallbearers were Robt.
Grieve, A. W. Dick. Albert Fortune,
Ches. Henderson, W. A. Wright and
C. P, Sills. Among those from a
distance attending the funeral- were:

London; Mr. Wardell Nicholls, Mr.

EGMONDVILLE
Young People's Union Opens Season
The opening meeting of the Eg-
mondville Young People's Union was
held on Monday evening- in the base-
mentof- the church. A sing -song of
favorite hymns were sung, led by
Anna Watson at the piano, Mr. Gard-
iner, the acting -president, then took
the chair. The minutes of the last
meeting were read by the secretary,
Warden Haney. Mr. Gardiner then
gave the report of the executive com-
mittee ,held on Sunday evening, Nov.
9th. It was suggested. at this meet-
ing that Maynre Watson act as presj-
dent till the end of the year in tee
absence of the past president, Gor-
don Finnigan, also that.. Isabel Robin,
son be missionary convener and Glen
Gemmell, the literary convener For the
rest of the year. It was moved by
Mr. Peterson and seconded by W.
Haney, that these three be elected for
the fall' term. Mayme Watson then
took the chair and Hymn 376 was
sung, -after which the Lord's Prayer
was repeated in unison. During the
business period Mrs. Gardiner moved
and Mr. Peterson seconded, that Anna
Watson and Isabel Robinson be press
reporters. The offering was then
taken by Douglas Wallace,. after
which Mr, Peterson took charge of
the 'devotional period, opening, with
Hymn 388. Mr. Gardiner led in prayer
and the Scripture lesson was read
from Matthey`' 6:5-15, after which a
devotional story was read. The mis-
sionary convener, Isabel Robinson,
then took charge and read a very
.suitable poem. Before closing the
members 'all enjoyed a quiz which Mr.
Gardiner conducted. The meeting
-then closed with the National Anthem
and the Mizpah Benediction,

Brother Dies
A. Tebbutt, hardware merchant,
died in Alexandra General and Mar-
ine Hospital, Goderich, on Sunday
night. He hada not been, in good health
for several years and had been ser-
iously ill for about ten days. Born in
'Goderich township, the departed man
was a son of the late Mr.' and Mrs.
Walgate Tebbutt. He' had .lived there
for 50 years prior to going to Gode-
rich 22 year ago when he established
a hardware business on West Street,
His son, Gordon, was 'associated with
nitric and they conducted the business
for 12 years. The late Mr. Tebbutt
was married three times, his first
wife being the bate Mary Jack and his
second wife beim Mian Catherine Mc-
Leod, Surviving besides his son, Gor-
don, and his wife, the former Mt
Eliza Phillip's, are three brothers,
Lewis of Seaforth; Henry of Redlands;
