Death of Dr. Newton MacTavish— Prominent for many years in Cana- lian art and literature, Dr. Newton M,eFaul MacTavish died Sunday at his hpme on Lascelles Blvd, Toronto. He had been- in ill health for ten' years, Dr. MacTavish was editor for 20 years of the Canadian Magazine, was appointed is 1925 to the civil service commission of Canada, and for the past 12 years had been a,trus- tee of the National Gallery of Can- o ada. Born in Staffa, Ont., in 1875, he graduated from Seaforth Collegiate Institute and McGill University and began his career as a reporter in 1895 on the old Globe. He left in 1906 to become editor of the Canadian Maga- zine. He also' wrote numerous -short . h stories and essays printed here and in the United States .and was author or .c severalebooks.: Among the latter is "The Fine Arts in Canada" and a i• work of humorous essays, "Thown In.`'• Acadian University, Wolfville, N.S., gave him an honorary degree as doctor of 'literature. He was presi- I f dent of- the Ottawa branch' of the Can -1 adian Authors'. Association for two terms and was one of the earliest members of the Arts and Letters Club, Toronto, He is -survived by his widow, a son, Lachlan R.
