Sudden Death of Andrew Turnbull The death took place suddenly in Dashwood on Tuesday of Andrew Turnbull, of the Blue Water High- way, id his 65th year. Mr. Turnbull had gone to Dashwood with a load of chop and from the chopping mill he had gone to the blacksmith shop when he collapsed and expired sud- denly. The deceased is survived by his bereaved wife, formerly Christina Love, and five -daughters: (Agnes) Mrs. Garnet Paterson, of the Blue Water Highway; (Mabel) Mrs. Ed. Gill, Grand Bend; Mrs. Ruth Gill, Olive and Janet, at home, also one sister, Mrs. E. Campbell, of Ontario, California. The funeral was held on Thursday from his late residence at two o'clock, followed by a service in Grand Bend United Church. Inter- ment was made in Grand Bend ceme- tery. The services were in «barge of Rev. Mr. Moore. -Exeter Times -Advo- cate. Dainty Recipes Prune Sponge Four tablespoons quick cooking tap- ioca, three tablespoonsysugar, half teaspoon salt, one and one-third cups prune juice and milk, one tablespoon butter, one-eighth teaspoon cinnamon, one and a half teaspoons grated or- ange rind, three tablespoons orange juice, four .teaspoons lemon juice, one cup finely cut cooked prunes, three egg yolks, beaten until thick and lem- on -colored, three egg whites, stiffly beaten. Combine tapioca, sugar, salt, prune juice and milk in top of dou- ble boiler. Place over rapidly boiling water and bring to scalding point (al- low 4 minutes), and cook three min- utes, stiasing frequently. .Add butter, cinnamon, orange rind;, orange juice, lemon juice and .prunes. Cool slight- ly, while beating eggs. Add egg yolks and mix well. Fold into egg whites. Turn into greased,baking dish. Place in pan of bot water and bake in mod- erate ovens 50 so 60 minutes, or until firm. Cul1 Brown Soup. ' - three-quarters of a pound of shin beef into small pieces, roll them in seasoned flour, and brown in a lit- tle hot dripping.. Drain off the fat and cover with' four pinta of cold wa ter. Put in a marrow bone or a knuckle bone. Bring to the boil and skim thoroughly, them add a sliced turnip, two or three carrots, and an onion, also a blade of mace, a bay - leaf, a sprig of parsley, pepper and salt. Cover, and simmer slowly . for not less than three `hours, skimming occasionally. Strain the soup, press- ing it well against the sieve without actually rubbing the vegetables' through. E'lend a tablespoonful of flour with a little of the soup, and return all to the pan with a cube of meat extract or some gravy browning to give a deep, rich brown.. Boil for two minutes, stirring welt; and serve with sippets of toast. Plantation Pudding One and one-half cups of pastry flour, 3 •teaspoons baking powder, two- thirds cup sugar, 1/4 teaspon each cloves, cinnamon and allspice, one- third. cup orange juice, 14 cup melted butter, 1 egg, half cup warm mashed sweet potato or cooked squash, one- third cup seeded raisins, one-third cup chopped wainute, 1'4 ounces on - sweetened chocolate, grated (not melted). Sift together dry ingredi- ents; mix together orange „juice, melted butter and well beaten egg; add to dry ingredients; -mix well. Add sweet potato and mix thoroughly; add raisins and nuts; fold in grated choc- olate last. Put into -large, well greas- ed mould and steam 21 hours. Serve warm with thin cream slightly •sweet- ened and flavored with nutmeg. Belgian Goulash Allow 1% pounds of stewing steak and 14 pound. of ox kidney. Melt 2 tablespoons dripping iron pan. When smoking 'hot, put •the meat in (chop- ped into smallish pieces) and brown lightly. Remove the meat, add a lit- tle more fat, and when this is bot fry in it 1 pound peeled and sliced onions. When these are golden brown remove them and put them, with the meat, in a saucepan. Dover with warm water or stock, add pepper and salt, a bay leaf, aridfa dessertspoon vinegar, and allow to simmer for 2 hours after reaching the boil. Add a little warm water from tine to time. if necessary. Thicken the gravy be- fore Serving. This recipe can also he used for rabbit instead of steak and kidney. Vegetable Pie This is a cheap and tasty dish, for supper. Any other vegetable may be substitaSed for the potato or a number otvvegetables may be used. Boil 2 or 3 large white onions in salt- ed waternr half an hour,. then put in the -se number of potatoes and gook until smut. Drain well and cut both into slices. Butter a pie dish_ and line with potatoes. Sprinkle with pepper and salt and put in a layer of onions, then cover with white •sauce. Then sprinkle thickly with a layer of "grsated cheese. Fill the dish like this, putting cheese (in top. Put under the giill for a few 'minutes until the top is nicely browned. Ham Sandwich Spread The remains ,of a boiled ham near the bone can be potted to make a de- lirious sandwich spread. If kept in a cool, dark •place the unopened pots will keep for several days. To each half pound of the lean meat use an ounce of fat. Put through the min- cer twice then pound until smooth and ,rubs through a sieve. Season ra- t:•: r ,highly with cayenne, parika, and meg. Add about half a teaspoon - Ss' of piquant, sauce and mix thor- oughly. Put into the pots and run melted butter over the top, cov'bring thickly. Sour Cream Cocoa Cake Two and a half cups cake flour, 2 cups sugar, d tablespoons cocoa, two teaspoons soda, 1/e teaspoon salt„ 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 4 eggs, 2 cups thick sour creatn,, 1 tep6e11 vanilla. Add to dry In- gredients and beat well. Bake in 3 layers or in a very large sheet cake in moderate oven about 30 minutes. The recipe is easily divided -iii half to make one sheet cake or two small layers. Welsh Rarebit One tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon, dour, 1 cup rich milk or thin cream, 2 cups grated cheese, 14 teaspoon salt, S • teaspoon mustard, few grains cay- enne, 1 egg. Make a sauce of butter, flow and milk. Add together cheese and seasonings. Pour some of hot sauce over 'beaten -egg. Return to double- boiler and, cook a minute or two. Delicious poured over any freshly Cooked , green vegetable and served on toast. Corned Beef Boiled Dinner Three pounds boneless corned bris- ket, 6 turnips„ 6 carrots, 1 large bead cabbage, 6 potatoes, 6 small white on- ions. Wash beef well and soak over- night. Cook for two hours. Peel all vegetables and add all to beef except potatoes and onion. Cook ir% hours, then add potatoes and 'Orion and book Until well ,done or about three- quarters era hour.
