The Councils Are All Set

Ontario Apples in Britain
-After a period of abnormally large
shipments of Canadian apples, siip-
plies reaching the. British markets
are now more.maderate, and, as a
he -suit, prices obtainecesfer Ontario
Baldwins. Snows and •Greenings have
risen a few shillings barrel. An-
drew Fulton, the overseas fruit re-
nresentative, reports that good qual-
ity Ontario Baldwins, No. 1,'s are
making from 17 shillings and 6 penee
hat22 shil1ings...a2barrel according to
colour. Some attractive Ontario
Snows mane 20 shillings to 23 shill-
ings and 6 peree, Ontario Greenings
are also making better prices, rang-
ing from 19 shillings to 22 shillings
for No. 1 quality. These latter pries
es show how .uruwise it was to unloads
large quantities of Green•ings on the
British market at 12 to 14 shilling's
in the Fall, at a time when English
cooking apples were still abundant.
Mr. Fulton thinks that the prospects
for good colored 'Ontario. Baldwins
and Greenin.gs as well are likely to
be fairly satiefactory after the New
Year. Ben Davis .atel Starks, how-
ever, Win have to meet competition
from the large quantities of these
varieties coming from Nova Scotia in
January and February.
(Mr. Fulton again advocates that
steps be taken in Canada to devise
• some scheme of orderly. shipments
teen all Provinces, in order to head
off the rising tide of dissatisfaction•
on the part on English apple grow-
ers who naturally resent having their
short selling season in the fall rein-
ed by excessive supplies of overseas
apples, much of them cooking varie-
ties.
The •English 'growers .suggestthe
adoption of same voluntary means of
preventing gluts of apple's in the
British !markets in heavy crop years.
During 1933,for example, the Brit-
ish markets were continually ever -
supplied with apples from one over-
seas source or another froze( April -to
December-, and during that time the
se,ason's° crop of alt English. fruits
-had consequently to he marketd at a
disadvantage. Of course the Canad-
ianfruit growers also suffer when
their apples We too hurriedly alien-
ed on mankets already overstooked
with supplies.
