caught up by gusts of wind spun a-

His labors on the fence completed,
the shepherd rolled a -well-earned cig-
arette. A match spluttered and flar-
ed; the tobacco glowed. Then 'he spur-
red his tired horse forward at a can-
ter, disappearing over the crest of a
low ridge. Out of the kangaroo -grass
at the very spot where the man had
last paused, curled up a tiny blue
spiral of smoke. After a short inter-
val there was a red spurt of flame—
followed another, and another. The
withered grass had caught alight.
The. hot northerly wind played with
th7flames. fanning them ceaselessly,
scourging them tbrough the grass,
causing them to ignite fallen twigs,
desiccated, tinder -dry. They era ' wled
,relentlessly up the bole of a stringy
bark gum, licking -hungrily at the
hairy bark, witining .through the
,tufts of oily leaves. A startlqd orp-
ossum darted out of his hole by a
branch fork. Dazed, half -suffocated
by the pungent smoke, he balanced
'himself unsteadily for a moment, fin-
ally launching himself into space. A
bump as be landed heavily, and then
he awkwardly staggered down the
fence, shaking his paws as he went.
A six foot strip of loose bark flut-
tered pennonlike from a branch. The
flames caught at the joining end, blaz-
ing up fiercely. The strip parted from
the tree, sailing off through the air,
spraying the grass
with smouldering fragments. Where
each piece fell, a black and eVeT-wid-
.
ening circle appeared, red -rimmed,
implacable, creeping back against the
Wind, -surging forward. '
So the fire spread . Along a front
of over two miles the bush was a rag-
ing inferno. Great trees moaned and
whined as the flames coiled round
them, dispelling their s-ap as steam,
reducing their volatile leaves. to ash.
'
The fire tore through the wattle scrub,
racel through the grassy flats, leaving
a charred and -smoking no -man's land
behind. Down in an. open paddoc
