)FIRST SPORTS'PAGE MADE IN ,
In the Ottawa J,ournal the other
daiy there appeared a reference to the
!first sporting page ever established,
and as The 'Mail arid) Empire had the
honor of making, this memorable con-
. tribution to journalism, perhaps some
I further explanation is justified.
"About 40 years ago" is the, date.as-
le event by the
Jaurnal, but we think that it is prob-
ably more than 50 years ago. The ex-
act date may well -remain in doubt for
it is questionable if the first issue
which could be considered a sporting
page could be identified, so different
would it appear to the sports section
of modern newspapers, consisting as
they commonly do ,of fou ' r or five
pages. 'Mr. Franklin Elmore, who was i
-for many years the sports editor of
The Mail and Empire and the greatest
baseball authority in the history of
0anadian journalism, can recall many
-a day when the sporting department
consisted of a quarter of a column
of matter, and this was. in a day when
the sports page was. a recognized
feature, of eveTy daily paper. Sports I
in those days were small and instig-
Inificant, of course, in comparison with
I what they have since become. To -day
they appear to have oustrijped re-
ligion in the interest of the average

I , n, o, papers, we were
struck "by ,the fact that the 'ed2bors
have been comparatively few. An
average sports edirto,r seems to out-
last half a doze:qt city editors... Thi,s,
they unanimously eiplain as being
the fruits of their ascetic habits of
living and their extraordinary abili-
ties and since, as a class, they are
impervious to argument, one might
as well accept their own theory of
what is nevertheless a curious fact
in newspaper work. On the Mail and
Empire in 40 yews there -have -been
only two sports editOs, 'Mr. Ell..-_
and Mr. Ed*in Allan. Mr. Elmore
had four predecessoTs, Messrs. Good,
W. H. Williams, P. D. Ross and Geo.
Harrington, an ITishmaiv who -was
originally destined for the priesthood
but who -abandoned. the train-ing wheri
he discovered that he lacked the vo-
cation. Mr. Williams worked on The
Mail for less than a fortnight, and
seems to harvie been disdharged be-
cause he resolutely declined to come
to work. 'Before that he had been.
sports effitur of the Globe.
iHis, leaving that paper created, a
vacancy which was filled by,one of the
most celebrated sporting men in Can.
ada, who happily is still active, Mr.
Francis Nels,ii, one of the best equip-
ped sports. vaiters on the continent.
M.r. Nelson came to the Globe, from
Ha-milton nearly 50, years ago. In the
intervening period that papeT has had
iust two otherr sports editors, Messrs.
Frederick Wilson,,a great -baseball au-
thority, and IM. J. Rodden, an all-
round sports man whose utterances
on hocke,y and football have an al-
most papal ,authority. On the Toronto
World A. N. Garrett was the sports
editor throughout nearly -all its car-
eerr. A few m,ontJhs ago Mr. W. A.
Hewitt, -of the, Star, celebrated his 30
years an that paper, and may fairly
be consideTed one of the chief factors
n its great success. Our recollec-
tion is that for a short time, Mr.
J,ck Ryan was sports, editor on the
Star, but that was in its infancy. Mr.
Hewitt was alSO for a while n the
News, and other News sports editors
weTe Charles, N. Smith, later of the
Sault, and, we, think, Joe Hay, at
present with the Globe. Bobby Eng-
ish was -the first sports editor of the
Telegram, and was followed% by J.
Sinclad-r (Cully) Robertson, the eldest
som of, the pioprietor. The Drezent
sports editor is Major J. P. Fitzger-
ald.
