A REAL (EIDE-MAN The notice "Boy Wanted" was dis- played in the window, and Jimmy Jones, after gazing at it thoughtfylly for a minute or ,two, stepped into the shop. "What sort of boy is it you want?" the asked the owner. "Oh, a decent sort of lad --one who is quick and willing and who won't laze about with a cigarette between ids lips, and whistle, one who knows $is manners, one—" Jimmy Jones thrust his hands into phis pockets and eyed -the shopkeeper contemptuously 'Gann!" he cried. Forget, Sask., April 11.-a(Special) —"In former years I have been affect- ed with Kidney trouble causing weak- ness of the body and eyes," writes Mr. L. Siaud, a well-known resident of this place. "Since I adopted the custom of taking Dodd's Kidney Pills 1 feel 100 per cent. better. Let .this letter convince all sufferers from kid- ney trouble that, 'Two Dodd's Kidney Pills, three times a day is better than persbn in the hospital.'" The road to good health lies through the Kidneys. If they are Dept well and strong, all the impuri- ties are strained out of the blood. If they are weak and out of order the impurities stay in the blood and dis- ease is the sure result. Dodd's Kidney Pills keep the kid- neys in good condition to do their work of cleaning and purifying the (blood. Weak, nervous, rum -down men and women should give them a trial at conte. USED TO IT For more than two hours the club lore had been telling his stories to the occupant of the chair opposite him In the smoking room. 'At last the wretched victim decided that he would' have to be rude if he were to escape at all. When the next story came to end he gave a prodigious yawn. - "Excuse me," he said. But the club bore was a match for the best where rudeness was con- cerned. "That's quite all right, old man," the wheezed. "It doesn't bother me at all. Losses- Due to Senecas and Rusts It is -exceedingly difficult if not im- possible' to estimate the financial loss caused by these diseases. The following rough estimate of the loss caused by smuts has been mads; by considering the value of different grain crops gown in Ontario each year, and the estimate annual average percentage that the yield of the dif- ferent crops is reduced by smut: Oats IJJarket value of yearly crops, about $60,000,000 Estimated average annual loss due to smuts, 5 per cent.. of crop, yearly financial loss 3,000,000 Barley Market value of yearly crops, about . 11,000,000 Estimated average anneal loss due to smuts, 4 per cent. of crop, yearly financial loss 440,000 Lasses due to rusts are very hard tc estimate as they vary greatly from year- to Oar with the season. How- ever, this financial loss to farmers of Ontario can be greatly reduced. The grain smuts can be prevented al- most entirely by proper treatment of the seed, and the loss caused by grain rusts materially reduced by skillful and careful farming. Methods of Prevention of Oat Smut. Oat smut is the most common and troublesome grain smut in the Pro- vince. Loose smut and covered smut of oats are two separate diseases, but in so much as the treatment of the= two smuts is the same, from the standpoint of the practical man they may be considered the same. Place the oats to be treated in a pile on the granary or barn floor and shovel them into another pile, as they are being shovelled over spray thein with a solution consisting of one part formalin and one part water. Use this solution at the rate of one pint to twenty-five bushels of oats. If smaller or larger quantities are to be treated, use proportional amounts of formaldehyde solution; thus twelve and a half bushels require only on puarter pint of formalin mixed with one quarter pint of water. A small quart sprayer costing about one dol- lar is 'the most convenient for the spraying the formalin solution on the Cats. Two men can best do the work, one man should 'shovel the grain while the other sprays each shovelful. In order to avoid irritation to the eyes. nose and throat from the strong for- maldehyde fumes, provide good air circulation in the granary and barn when the work is in progress. After the oats are all sprayed they should be piled in a heap and covered with blankets or bags for five hours and then sown. This dry treatment has been found very satisfactory. It is easily carried out. The grain does not clog in the drill and in case of wet weather not fit for sowing, there is not likely to be any ill effects on germination as with the wet treatment. Treating Barley Smut. One pint of formalin to forty gal- lons of water should be sprinkled on barley at the rate of 2-3 gallons or more per bushel. Make sure that all the barley is Moistened. Cover for two or three hours and sow as soon as the grain will run through '. •the drill. A mixture of barley and oats may be tr.eated without much injury to the barley by the dry treatment as out- lified for oats. N.B.—See that the floor on which the grain is treated is clean. Give it a few shots with the sprayer. Spray the bags or sacks inside and out. Spray the drill. These points are important and if neglected your work may be undone. Suggestions as to how to Reduce Loss from Rust. There is no way of treating the seed or spraying the crop so as to prevent rust. It is impossible to con- trol rust entirely, but loss from rust may be reduced considerably by act- ing on the following suggestions: 1. The Common Barberry and the Buckthorn harbour this disease, Rust may cause serious loss in districts where these shrubs are not found; but when they are present they undoubt- edly tend to increase the disease Destroy them. Aiming to wipe out wheat rust in Ontario, Hon. John S Martin, Minister of Agriculture, in- troduced a bill in the Legislature which will make the growing of the common barberry in Ontario unlaw- ful. 2. Wet seasons, poorly drained land and late ripening varieties all favor rust development. 3. Endeavor to have the crop mature as early as possible by pre- paring a good seed bed and using early varieties or farm crops. 4. Good cultural methods, rich fertile land. plump seed treated for smut and the use of even ripening varieties in mixtures wi11 materially reduce the chances of rust causing serious loss. Don't suffer from dangerous gas pressing around your heart, from (sourness, acidity, bloating, or pain of indigestion. Stop worrying. With farmers already at work on the land in Southwestern Ontario and in some of the Central Counties, the sprng grains should get away to an early start. Whatever advantages an early season may offer, however, 'will not ensure a heavy yield at har- vest time unless the snil is adegdato-'', ly supplied with the necessary plant food. With the expgnse of prepara- tion of land, seed grain, investment in land and equipment, a heavy yield of grain per acre is essential if the cost of production per bushel is to be crept down. In this connection, the results of a elemonstration i'n the fertilizing of -(spring sown mixed grains on the farm of A. A. Holmes at Kemptville, On- tario„ are interesting. On one sec - 'tion of the field no fertilizer was giv- en; on another, 200 pounds of super- phosphate and 60 pounds of sulphate of potash to the acre; while the third -eectioes received a eomplete fertilizer at the rate of 140 pounds of Chilean nitrate of soda, 200 pounds of super- phosphate and 60 pounds of sulphate of potash to the acre. A fourth sec- tion was fertilizedwith nitrate of 'soda alone at the rate of 140 pounds So the acre.
