"Why, we'd have the whole town
running in.,' -
"Go on, son. Make it speai. Bears
is easy killed:"
"Nonsense."
Reluctantly Tom reloaded his wea-
pon and thrust it back into its shoul-
der holster; regretfully he-murniured:
"Doggone! We never have any more
fun." He turned toward the door.
"Vi%ere are you going, dad?"
"I got to see a man; back in an
hour. Anybody calls-" '
"You know ytuwon't be back in
an hour., 'Where are you going?"
. "I got to see- What is it?"
"Bob" hesitated. "I wish you'd
3tay here. I think 'Mr. Gray arrived
this morning, and I expect him in."
Tom decided, that he, had *ade
Tudge Halloran wait long enough. He
3hould have been in the old, rascal's
.dng row by this time. I& he said,
ariskly, "Wish I could, son, but I got
o see a man."
"Mr. Gray -was here several times
aefore he went away, but you were
ilways out." Whenher father show -
A no inclination to tarry, Barbara
'
pake with more impatience than she
iad ever used- toward, him. "I want
iim to meet you, dad, for he has come
)ack on purpose to take up that Jack-
on well. If I devote all my time to
)usiness, it seems to me you could
ifford to sacrifice an hour to it, ju-A
;hIs once. That checker game can
wait."
Tom Parker stiffened. Sacrifice an
Lour to business, just once! That was
L blow. As if his nose was not at
he grindstone day in and day out! As
f he were not practically chained to
,his office! As ' if unremitting ap,pli-
!ation to business had not -wrecked
iim-worn him to the bone -made an
nsomniac of him! That was, the
vorst about children, boys especially; I
hey twitted, their elders; they
,bought they were the whole works;
hey assunied undue impbrtancci. Tom
vas offerided, and, being a stubborn
nan, he bowed his back.
"Tell him to wait," he said curtly.
I'll get around to it soon as I can."
"Why, dad! He isn't a man who
an wait. ' This ,deal won't wait,
fther."
"I been talking over that Jackson
vell with--4with a man, and I got
Lim-"
"I asked you not to mention it -not
o a soul. It is a very important :
natter and-' .
Now Tom ad not discussed the '
raekson well, except casually with
rudge Halloran, but every word, that
'Bob" spoke rankled, so he interrupt-

.d with a resentful query:
"Ain't I equal to han'le an import-
Lnt deal?"
"Bob" acknowledged quickly that
ie was. She had not -meant to crit-
cize his ability to conduct negotia-
ions of the very highest importance,
)ut she was surprised, in view of her
mrnest reauest, that he had even
rentioned this particular ,matter to
mybody. She reminded him that in-
,lurance was his forte, and that their
inderstanding had been that she was
lo take exqlusive charge of their oil
)usiness. While sh,d wag talking,
rom realized -with a disag-reable
hock that of late there bad, been no
nsurance -written, none whatever. He'
iad given the matter no thoug1ht, but
;uch was undoubtedly the case, and
n his daughter's words be felt a re-
:)uke. Now he could not a -bide re-
)ukes; he had never permitted any-
o,ody to criticize him. .For once that
inconscious irritation that had been
Jowly accumulating within ,him flam-
A up. It was an irritation too vague,
;oo formless to put -into words, es-
pecially inasmuch as words did hot
ome easily to Tom ParkeiiI when ,he,
was mad.
Without further comment the old,
man pulled his gray wide-awake low -
E! -r over his eyes and, limped out of
the room. But he did not go to Judge
Halloran's office; he was too sore to
risk further offense at the hands of
one who took malicious delight in an-
tagonizing him, so 'he walked the
streets. The more be pondered Bob's
accusation -and accusation it surely
was-Ae angrier 'he became; not at
her, of course, for she was blood, of
his blood, his other and ,better self;
but angry at himself for allowing the
reins to slip out of his fingers. He
was the head of the firm. It was
due to big ripe judgment and keen
common sense that the business ran
on; his name and standing it -was
that gave it stability. Perhaps he
bad permitted the girl to- do more
than her share of the work, and bence
her inclination to take all the credit
for their joint succe.,sm was only na-
tural , but it wag time to -change all
,
that, time to-tuTn a big deal witbout

own wav and turn it over for a price
far in excess of seventy-fte, thousand

Little prickles ran over "Bob"- she

he saw 'Gray coming.
He entered, as she knew he would

een blown thither upon the breast of
gale. He was electric; he throbbed

"Bob" colored rosily at this instant

3nipliments were entirely genuine,
ierefore she took refuge behind 'her

He listened with smiling lips and

a-sy with new impressions of her,
