Joseph Parker, D.D.) Sunday School Lesson , for June 3rd Lesson Topic—Jesus Facing Be- trayal. Lesson Passage—Mark 14 : 17-25; 32-36. Golden Text—Mark 14:36. When Jesus left the Temple' two days befere the feast of the Pass- over, He went to Bethany and, most probably, spent the time in company with His friends or in retirement. The Scribes and Pharisees were meanwhile busy plotting against Him and to the -m Judas resorted offering to betray Him into their hands. For this they promised to give Him On the afternoon of the first day of the feast, the disciples went to Jesus to 'receive instructions about the place where they should observe it. Just as in. the case of securing a beast on which to ride into Jerusalem in state, he gave them minute direc- tions. They went and feund things exactly as He had indicated and there they made ready the Passover. This was the great festival. of the Jewish year which commemorated the freeing of their nation from Egyptian bondage. The large upper room furnished and prepared for the feast which was shown to the dieciples, may have been in the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark. We read in Luke 22:24 that •the disciples, most likely when getting seated aroundethe table, disputed among (ehemselves which should be greatest, with reference to the place of honor. Then too, none of them was willing to become the servant of the others anel wash their travel -stained feet. In John 13;1-20 we read of Jesus, after all were seat- ed, tieing and beginning to wash the disciples' feet. "The- washing of the disciples' feet was saying in the lang- uage of action that the Son of Man ' came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and that the law of His kingdom was the law of helpfulness." (Professor -Gilbert). - While they were eating the Pass- over, John tells us that Jesus was troubled in spirit. He knew what Judas had already agreed to do and He was deeply grieved that one who had associated with Him on intimate terms for so long a time, should even nownbe pretending to be His friend. At a missionary conference Bishop Ridley gave this experience: A band . of the boldest pirates of the Caledonian eeests came one night, on a baneeof Christian Indians engaged in a prayereservice. The heathen tore up the'Bibles, and because the Christians would not promise to cease praying, they began to break up the church, and finally set fire to the building. One young man of the Christians said: "Shall we not fight7 for the Ilonsee Of God?" But a senior Christian aniwered, "No, Jesus never fought; He,,ilied. We will die rather than fight." This was the beginning of the conversion of the pirates. Thus spoke Scotland Yard man after a recen trial at the Old Bailey and i must serve as our excuse for a col umn on the subject.. Scotland Yar officers are not usually so eztiphati in their Aatenrents, and Browne mus he an extraordinary ruffian to deserv the description. The only satisfactor thing in the whole story is the end death, and though he wilt appea there appears no shadow of doubt tha he will presently wind up on the sea fold. The crime for -which he and hi confederate, William Henry Kenned have been found guilty, was the col blooded murder of P. C. Gutteridge i the early hours of a September mo ing. For some mont however, he was able to elude t police: He made no attempt to lea the country and was brazenly carr ing on with stolen cars after thp in jOr erinie.
